Portland area Men's Clubs and other competition groups.

Recommended Posts

I thought it might be of interest to have a thread where people describe the different men's clubs and competition groups around the Portland area.  I played the Rose City men's club in 2017 and then Heron Lakes men's club 2018 - now.  I'll describe Heron lakes and maybe those who are members of other clubs can describe how they work.  The purpose is for new people to learn about what the different clubs offer, or for current club members to learn if there is another club that might better fit their needs.

At Heron the cost is $100 per year.  Games are on Wednesday mornings and Saturday mornings.  Entry fee toward the prize pool is $10, except some bigger tournaments which are $20.  about 80% of the time it is individual competition, 20% of the time it is some type of team best ball or shamble or scramble or something.  You sign up for games up to 1 week in advance online and can pick your tee time and playing partners.  Results are posted online and winnings are paid in cash.

The wednesday game is from the white tees and is on the greenback course more often than the great blue..  It is a Nassau format with prizes for front 9, back 9, and total 18 gross and net.  Prizes are weighted more toward net.  Although players of all handicaps play, the signups have a lot more guys that are age 60+ and handicap 7+

The saturday game is either blue or black tees and is about half and half between green and blue course.  Prizes are just for total 18 score and evenly divided between gross and net.  The players are generally a younger and lower handicap group, with a lot of players with handicap < 5 and a handful that are scratch or better.

Of course there are a wide variety of personalities, but overall I feel that the heron crew is generally a quiet and polite group.  Many guys have a beer or two during the round, but heavy drinking or other drug use is rare.  The games being individual with a relatively low buy in seems to keep things mostly drama free.  There are 250+ members and typically 60-80 entries on any given day during the high season.

These are the other clubs I know about in the area.  If you are a member why don't you make a similar post and describe them.  Or tell me about a new club I haven't heard of before

Rose City

Eastmoreland

Red Tail

NW Golf guys

BUMs

I'm sure there are a bunch more.

I know here at Langdon there’s a pretty active men’s group but it’s not huge. Not sure how it works as I don’t get to play in it.

Also there is a new group called GolfWeek Am tour. It’s sponsored by GolfWeek and has a good amount of guys that have become disenfranchised with NW Golf Guys. The events are pretty fun but much smaller. They also give you access to some National and larger regional events.

hope this helps b

Would love to learn more about the Langdon men's group. Haven't played out there since the state high school tourney in '98!!! Decent group of guys? Good players? How serious?

Trying to research the Golfweek one as well, that sounds pretty interesting!

I love NW Golf Guys and Travis is awesome. They run a great tourney. However I don't like the 6 hour+ rounds. However they have a ton of great players and courses. Very fun club. Also nice that you can request your own foursome if you have enough buddies to fill it up regularly. Makes the 6 hours more fun in my opinion.

I have been interested in the OGA events however they always seem to be on work days.

I am pondering joining Club Green Meadows one for the cost, secondly it is a few minutes from my house and it's a course that would require me to work the ball both ways with small greens (Which I could stand to work on). Then when I want some competition play in a NWGG event or an OGA/USGA event to see where the game stacks up. It's only $10 more to play as a guest in NWGG.
