Just wanted to share some of what I've learned in trying to find a reputable place to have some older irons refinished - I figured my options would be very limited, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I saw some older threads here and on Reddit that pointed me in the right direction, but also I've been browsing through Instagram and found a ton of people that are producing some STUNNING work. Putters seem to be by far the most popular club to have refinished, and as such some companies only handle putters. I wanted to make a post about that because some of these companies should have a ton of notoriety for the incredible work they do... and coming from a club junkie, I've had a few clubs that I've saved just because they were gems - I'm going to have my old Titleist 735 CM set refinished as well as several putters and I plan to post the results here. I thought some people might find some value in it, since spending a few hundred bucks to have your favorite clubs refinished with something custom is a HELL of a lot cheaper than new sets every few years.

Thought I would list them here so there was a slightly better chance of other people finding the info in a single place. I'll try to separate the companies that only do putters... if you all have any experience with refinishers I'd love to keep the conversation going to let people know what to expect, what your experience is, and if you have any other names to add to the list!

For irons I’d highly recommend Doug Oughton. He doesn’t have the IG presence of the others listed, but if you go to the raw iron thread you’ll see he’s a go to for refinishing work.

The work was exceptionally priced, turnaround was super quick, and my club heads came back looking unbelievably good. I sent in a set of MP68s I used all through high school playing compatibly and generally living as a range rat - they were frankly beat to hell. I was planning to just use them as a fun raw backup set, but they came back so far above and beyond what I expected (or the options I paid for) that they displaced my beloved MP64s.

Doug is great to work with, He has stripped about 2 dozen clubs for me to raw and I've been super impressed with both the work and the turn around time. He'll send you an email when he's received them and give a call when they're ready and he accepts CC and Paypal.  My most recent clubs done by him he received on 2/18/2021 and they were ready to be sent back to me by 3/7/2021 which you can't really beat.

Just to add to this thread, I have used Custom Craft Golf in Arlington, TX for a couple of Scotty refinishes and they are very good.  Prices are very reasonable as well.  Thanks for the post!

Had the worst experience with this dbag.

No communication after he received my putter.  About 4 weeks goes by and I get a package back from him.  Its my putter head, with absolutely nothing done to it.  He charged me $250 mind you 4 weeks prior.  After I opened the package and called him he sounded like he had no clue what happened.  Then came up with an excuse that he couldn't do the finish requested.

Nothing was ever said to me.  He never refunded my money either, I had to contact my credit card company and file a chargeback.  The dbag fought the charge, but luckily after 6 weeks I was issued a permanent credit.  10 weeks later finally received my full refund.  I would never send anyone to this place, he's a POS.

I'm curious, what work was that? I'm thinking of sending a putter over to Labworx, and the Golf Garage has this black cherry finish that keeps me up at night

Wow the resurrection of this thread made me realize I never responded to this back in March.  Anyway, if its still useful I had labworx do custom armor on the gamers of my wife and I.  Extremely pleased with the result.  Great communication/turnaround during the height of COVID.

I've used BOS in the past for older Scotty restores.  Couldnt recommend them enough either if you're looking for a traditional oil can like I was.  I know they do a bunch of other finishes, but I only used them for the oil can.  Great reputation that they upheld with me.

Here’s an update for you all - I’ve got a couple of projects in the works, here’s one that I’ve gotten back… got my Titleist 735 stainless refinished in the bronze from Tiger Nick (pictures are also on his Instagram when they were newly finished). It’s wearing a bit faster than I had hoped for, but they’re pretty stunning and I don’t mind a little wear on the sweet spot. Played like 5 rounds with them, maybe 6:

Mind sharing how much it costs to do a set or price per club?

Tigernick posts all of that on his website, I think it was around $350 - I supplied my own grips and shafts for the project. I’ve got a putter out to the Golf Garage, no info on exactly what that will cost but it’s pretty custom so I’m expecting it to be similar… I’m having some wedges refinished with Flanagan Bilt and that’s about $150… I also supplied grips and shafts for that one

Quick update - got my wedges back from Flanigan Bilt. Overall, very satisfied... a couple of thing to note - still are a couple of very small nicks in my 60 on the face, and the V-Sole (which is something I dearly love) is still nicely defined on the 60, but much less so on the 55 and 50. I haven't gotten to hit them and I'm kind of thinking they'll still perform well, but it is a slight disappointment.

Also, while the cost of the refinish was $150, there were a bunch of hidden costs that I got hit with on the invoice - shaft removal, shaft installation, ferule, etc. Total came out to $315, which is much richer than I was expecting - in my experience, expect some of these costs to rack up in the background. Best recommendation is to ship club heads only, and if you want to send the materials like I did, assume there will be a charge for it.

Another update… I sent off a Ben hogan mallet putter to get refinished, have the double bend shaft chopped off and a welded flow neck put on it. Again, overall I’m happy with it - the color and the custom etching and site dot is fantastic. There are a few nicks that were not buffed out, and I sent him (Kyle of the Golf Garage) an iomic grip that he did not use, nor did he send it back… tho he did put on some kind of custom stitched pistol superstroke grip on it that I’ve never seen.

the bad let was the lead time and communication - took him over 7 months to get my putter back, I tried to reach out about a dozen times over email and Instagram to get confirmation that my putter had been received. He told me I’d have it by my birthday in October, missed that deadline… told me I’d have it by Christmas and missed that… I literally got it 3 days ago. Also, while I didn’t ask, he didn’t discuss or quote the price of the weld neck work - upfront he told me the black cherry finish would be $175… turns out the custom neck was $225 on top of that.

for all of the delays, he did give me a 25% discount overall, and I’m satisfied in general… but I don’t know that I could recommend him - if you’re ok with no communication and a very long lead time, then absolutely. It was more frustrating and more expensive than I had originally thought.

So glad I found this thread. I found a used set of Nike VR TW blades and I want to get them restored. Checked out Oughtons and he is 15min away from the city I just moved to last week. If I end up having him refinish the irons I will report back to here. Might have whim work on some wedges to complete my Nike bag

Took up refinishing as a hobby 2 years ago when the COVID shutdowns hit and discovered I absolutely love it.  Learning more each day and trying different stuff.  If anyone wants to check out my IG account Masstercraft Custom Golf (username: masshole98) and offer any constructive criticism or let me know what you think hit me up.  Awesome thread here and some great looking clubs.
