PRGR - cool website, underrated sticks.

Recommended Posts

Was in the golf shop across town last night. It's got a lot of cool stuff. One of the coolest was the PRGR Tune wedges. I would have difficulty choosing between them and the artisan wedges that were also there.  Thought I would take a look at the their site and it is pretty neat. I love how you can get so many views of the club head. I can't think of a better way that has been done to show off what you've got.

https://www.prgr-golf.com/en/product/irons/16-tune-iron.html

I don't have one PRGR club, but there current and back catalog, especially the Tune line, is pretty decent. I should probably shut my mouth about it, but here we are.

I've had a wedge, an iron set, and 3 of the best woods I've had to date (driver/3w/5w). They make awesome stuff. I'd caution golfers who creep into their woods line that the Mitsubishi shafts they use are on the higher torque side, and play with a higher kick point. I'd go up 1 full flex, and consider tipping + extension for the faster swingers.

Wish I could go visit a shop that carried the line. I have to get PRGR through trial and error, and have had very very little error with their products. They are superb.

I picked up one of their woods last night and it felt and set up fantastic. If I could swing a club, my wallet would be a little lighter, me thinks.

PRGR make some really interesting stuff. I'd say they are probably the biggest "think outside of the box" clubmakers around today.

With regard to second hand stuff at least, I have to agree with @Kingcat990 that the shafts are soft/whippy. That's a major reason why I don't have any of their stuff.

That website feature that allows you to rotate the image of the club head is fantastic.

I don't know if it is a blessing or a curse that the X shaft is so rare here.

The ability to rotate the club is pretty damn neat too.

When my arm is better I think I'll try out the TUNE irons and wedges.

The woods, maybe there will come a day I find one with a nice shaft... I don't usually go through too many woods. I was/am really happy with my g400 and I wouldn't have switched to it from the 915D3 if I hadn't stupidly dropped my club on a tee marker breaking the shaft...

Very well done website.  I will say that looking at some of the various models they share one thing in common which is some seriously jacked up lofts.  I saw one set where the PW was 38 degrees.....that's extreme.  But most were at most 42 degrees, pretty darned strong.

Yeah, some of those lofts are crazy. But, they still have one set with more or less traditional lofts...

One thing I find really interesting is that the irons all say made in China. I was thinking they were made by Endo or even Miura. That doesn't appear to be the case. And, the TUNE wedge that looks so sweet is actually cast - what the F.

PRGR made what was probably the first driving/utility club I ever saw.  It was ugly, but man it could pound a golf ball off the tee...wasn't worth a damn off the turf though.  And they cost a ton (or it seemed like it when I was young)

I remember seeing Corey Pavin with a bag of PRGR clubs when I was a kid, which was the first time I had ever seen them.  They seemed to be building some whacky looking stuff (not as crazy as those VAS irons he used with Cleveland but pretty whacky) back then, but I seem to remember they were mostly cast stuff.

I could make a PRGR bag with what I have, minus putter.

RS-F Proto driver

Egg Spoon HD 3W

Egg I+ hybrid

200i DI
iD Nabla Black irons

L.E.D wedges

Had an Egg-7 driver once, sold it.

They did have a line of clubs done by Miura - the DATA series. Also, the Brian Watts wedges.

Hi guys I'm seeking some info on a PRGR set i recently bought.

They're the Speed irons TR. I think they were made around 2002 ish, and they look like a full blade. With lofts that are now modern traditional (33* 7 iron) which back then would've been strong and hence why I think they were called speed irons.

My questions are:

1. What does TR stand for?

2. Do any of you know exactly when they were produced?

3. Were these Endo forged?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Shot best round of my life with the ID BL set.  It is on my list of sold regrets, at the time I thought all that glittered jdm was gold and that set wound up being replaced with the onoff 358 shingos but that was a fantastic set of irons I should have just kept.  The shingos fit my 3 set rotation better but I agree, prgr highly underrated over here if you get some of their better stuff.

endo forged I believe?  The IDBL set was soft.

Thanks for that.

I ended up spending hours searching the Web and found some info after I posted this. I did however, get the irons, reshafted them and absolutely love them. Shot under in 3 rounds of my last 4 with them actually. Goes to show irons haven't really progressed too much in last 20 years.

any input on the 2011 ID Forged? the non ID BL's , I guess they had a gel behind the face, curious to see if they lean towards 'players' size and offset or more GI https://www.prgr-golf.com/archive_clubs/I-19-new-id-forged-iron.html

Severely underrated company. They pioneered a lot of things we take for granted today. They first measured head speed, they also made the first hybrid, and many other engineering firsts. As someone living in Japan, I hardly ever see PRGR. I got lucky enough to be fully fitted a PRGR driver free of charge.

Currently rocking a PRGR Tune O2 with another crazy shaft I'd never heard of. The Tune series is stuff that isn't normally bought it stores apparently, it has to be specially ordered.

First time on the course with it I carried 290 and broke 300 total for the first time in my life.

No one in Japan plays PRGR? Aren’t there several J-PGA players sponsored? Besides the Big 4 US OEM’s, what are the majority of golfers in Japan playing? XXIO, Srixon , Bridgestone?

They might have a few sponsored athletes but within the general public PRGR is pretty rare. XXIO definetly owns the metal woods of what I see, Srixon is rising in the irons, and Bridgestone is a split (usually a full bag). Bridgestone is really popular with the older folks still with some speed. Note sure why but it seems that way. By far the most popular irons with 10HDCP to scratch is Mizuno and Honma (specifically focusing on JDM. Taylormade boomed last year).

The popular brands in America get HEAVY promotion because they have the budgets to do so. I could go through the 100 people at the tiny 9 hole golf I play at, and maybe 3 people have one PRGR club in their bag. It's amazing how minor PRGR is and how they continue to make clubs. Maybe it's a regional thing within Japan?

Thanks for that insight. It makes me wonder if a relatively large company like PRGR has only a niche following, how can the smaller boutique JDM companies like jBEAM, Ryoma, Crazy, Vega, etc  even survive?
