What is up with Rory McIlroy?

Draw Driver

Recommended Posts

Rory is the Johnny Miller of his generation.  Stretches of absolute dominance in terms of ball-striking, blowing away fields in majors when he's on, not great at Augusta, and a (relatively) poor putter given the rest of his game.  He's not done, he's got too much talent not to win again, but the Tour is much deeper with the great young players coming out of college and winning.

He needs to commit to nailing down his wedge game like DJ did.  Who knows if he wants to work that hard though.  He's set for life many times over financially - it should free him up but instead it feels like he's coasting.  Tiger and Spieth (and Lydia Ko now too) have been able to come back from the wilderness - Rory should be able to as well.

I believe, mechanically he’s flawed. The ball flight on those wedges and big misses tee to green prove this out. So no matter what’s between the ears or in his belly, he’s got some work to do on the range, I suppose. But he’s young, and has all the resources in the world at his fingertips. Shouldn’t be too much about it. Just gotta get to it.

Tiger's issues have always been more health related.  I think he can get some inspiration from Spieth/Ko. Thing about Spieth is even on his bad days he will fight like hell to shoot a score, the guy never gives up. If Spieth drove it the way Rory did at Augusta on Thursday, I think he still would've found a way to grind out a 72/73. Another thing about Rory is he's been making way too many big numbers. In 2021 he's made a double or worse in every stroke play tournament. I personally think Rory will miss the cut at Kiawah (I know he won there in 2012, but he is nowhere near 2012 Rory) and Torrey Pines if he doesn't find anything soon. Those 2 courses are already tough if you're playing good, but there's no way Rory contends at either venue.

The first six holes of a major is his problem then its all catch up and he is done for the tournament. I do not think he is focused on the target at hand. His head is spinning on the outcome. If he plays the front nine of a major well he will be in the hunt. You can not play catch up in a major (period). The courses are so hard everything will snowball.

Unlike Spieth, Rory's thread doesn't become a 100 pages before his slump ends.

Great to see him back, will we finally get the Rory/Jordan duel at the PGA? I hope so.

Rory said he has had too low of expectations for himself and he wants to change that. Hopefully he works on his wedge game big time this offseason.
