Playing irons you weren’t fit for

Recommended Posts

Currently gaming the OG 0211s but can’t get my head of the zx series irons. Having never hit them and just spending a bunch on my current irons that were fit to me, does anyone just ditch your fitted set to try something else? Granted I love my pxgs but the Srixon v sole and great reviews sound too good to pass up. I am a steep player with a typical fat miss.

PXG's have a lot of bounce.  The 0211's don't have a particularly fat sole but the bounce makes them less diggy than average.

In terms of fitting some new irons I'd baseline against what you are playing now, then adjust as necessary from there.  Find shafts of the same weight and flex unless you have a reason to want to change.

If you are going to get the Srixons, just buy them, but don't sell off your other set to do so.

Ya I get that. Only worry about the question of, why do you need two iron sets

Every single golf club I've purchased without being fitted has lasted an extremely short time in my bag.

I've gone through dozens of iron sets, a stack of putters (currently selling 5 putters right now), and my losses from these experiments would be in the thousands.

We're all searching for a quick fix and an easy/cheap way out but there are no shortcuts in golf. Buying blind is a fool's game.

Get fitted. Multiple times, on multiple days if posssible.

Get the irons you want as for fitting it is way over rated. Most who do get fitted do not improve their handicap but love to tell you about their ball speed, smash factor, blah blah.

Exactly this.

When you hit an iron in a round of golf, you're trying to simply swing the club so that you get the ball near your target.

When most get onto a matt inside where the first thing most do is look at distance and club head speed, it's usually a very different swing than hitting on real grass with a shot that matters to your score.

If you're a low handicap player with a very repeatable swing, don't worry about a fitting..especially indoors. Also, be 100% certain the fitter doesn't have any incentives to sell certain brand shafts/heads.

I’ve never been fitted and have been on multiple waiting lists since November/December.

But from what I understand, if you already know the lie angle, length, and type of shaft you need, you should be fine to buy a different set with your specs.

You’re already way ahead of most of us because you’ve already had a proper fitting and already know the type of clubs that work for your game.

I'm average in every dimension and have never found a reason to be fit for irons because the usual specs seem to fit me well. I see my divots are shallow and even in depth and my ball flight is as expected so I figure I'm good.

OTOH I have had to learn my shaft preferences through trial and error which is probably not the best way. If I was shopping for brand new irons and planning to drop a grand I'd get fit just to be sure I wasn't choosing the wrong shaft or flex. I've always bought my irons used so it's never been worth a fitting.

I ditched my recently fitted set (Apex 19), but only after a month or two on a launch monitor to realize they weren't a great fit for me. 5-7 irons were just too low spin and the heads seemed hot. (Second point I've had a hard time proving with data, to be fair.) Picked up i210s with a similar shaft (fit for Modus 120x, got DG 120x) and have been loving them both on the LM and my one time on the course with them.

I have this same issue. I don't need two sets "normally" but right now I have my gamers and the "dream set" I am building that might only look good on paper. If they pan out, they become my gamers and I sell the others.

I will likely end up with 2 sets and that's ok as long as I like both. I'm not one to horde gear, if it isn't getting used at least sometimes, it's gone

<edit> I have never been fit, but I will eventually. My "dream set" is just that. Irons I thought might be sweet built with the standard shaft that's been in all my irons. This is why I haven't sold my gamers, they could be a hot mess. 🤣

Thank you all for your comments. I will say that the 0211s are good for me. I hit them way better than my last set. I like the feel and distance control is pretty good (although Arccos has humbled me)

My only reason for even considering the zx series is the v sole for when my swing isn’t all there and everything is fat city ( I know these won’t prevent chunks at all ).

To answer some questions I was fit on grass, and if I ever do again it will always be on grass. My problem would be explaining to my wife the need for more golf clubs and her reasoning of “ how can you improve it if you keep changing clubs out?” Maybe I just need to find a demo day and test them for myself.

What I personally have found is that I've bought way too much golf equipment.  Some of it has really helped my game and some has not.  Personally, I find that driver and putter are the biggest equipment gains.

I've had periods where I couldn't get off to tee without being in the trees, deep rough, etc... An improvement in driver given that scenario can probably save 10 strokes/round.  Having a putter you trust, can lag effectively, and make short putts repeatably also can save some strokes.

I think wedges have the next best potential.  If your current ones have sole/grinds that don't work for your swing there's a real gain to make here and get up&down more often.

I find irons and hybrids don't have that much impact unless they are poorly fit. If you like the Srixons then by all means they may be a really good gain for you.   Some guys see real improvement from iron changes.  I personally haven't experienced it though.

Dave

My irons are seen as having low bounce.  Irons with SGI type bounce are for people that have an uncontrolled urge to dig to China, a place I have NO interest in going.  If "YOU" are a digger, be careful you're not enjoying a sultry honeymoon of less bounce.

FYI, of the thirty years playing golf, I was only fit for one set of irons back in 2005, Titleist 735CM 2-PW with 6.5 Rifles.  They were really nice clubs.  The rest I bought off the rack and had them adjusted and bounce shaved to my liking.

I will note part of the improvement I saw was updated and better hardware, but also the effort I am finally putting into my game. But my hardware was 20+ years old and things have come a little ways since then. 🤣

I would say it matters more when your physical dimensions are outside of standard.   A tall dude is generally going to need longer clubs than standard and lie adjusted.

Can I hit standard?   Yes, but I hit 1" longer and 1* flat so much better (I.e., straighter and more consistently).  It could be any head as long as those two things are set.

Yes ppl do this all the time. Ive played clubs ive never tested or fit for before with great results. There is one thing you can do to cure your curiosity. Globalgolf has a demo club section. You can demo the irons you want... see how they do then decide on getting them or not.

ya i have thought of that but they would not be in the shaft i need (although i like the feel of the Modus3, just didnt have the best dispersion with them)

While i do think shafts can help making shots right... i dont think its the be all end all of overall golf. If your really bursting for them you will just end up with them lol

I know my setup and likes enough that I could easily buy a set of clubs without going to a fitting... (I've done it before)... I'm also gaming irons from 2012 that I shafted with pulls my club pro had lying around because it was the cheapest way to get the set put together... and it works just fine.

I'd been dreaming about owning a set of CMBs for 8 years, just never bothered to pull the trigger... saw heads on sale here for $50 and now have around $300 into the set (oddly, the gap wedge is $100 of that). It was fun, and I'm glad I did it...but I also did it cheap.

I'd highly recommend going and hitting the Srixon before buying them... maybe even take some time to try them with different shafts... or just put them on a wish list and see if you can snag a set for cheap down the road.

Though, honestly, this whole thread feels like you are asking us to give you the green light to buy them... so I'll say I've heard nothing but good things about them, think they are wonderful looking clubs and I'm sure they won't be worse than what you have.
