Why he’s gotten invites (I know how sponsors exemptions work) I don’t know. He seems like a nice guy but to me there’s no PGA Tour talent there, +14, +19, +22 that’s not good at all.

okay I can’t figure this out how did this guy just randomly start appearing in all these tournaments?

The course is just another boring flat Florida course. PGA plays way too much boring Florida golf.

Yeah, you're right. They should be playing in North Dakota in March. 🙄

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

He won the 2020 APGA Tour Championship.

Oh okay thanks, so that gives them a tour card? His scores look like he should probably try Korn ferry first.

Not a card ... sponsor exemptions.

Wise from a 6 shot lead after the 5th today, to finishing 3 behind the leader 😖

Golf is hard. It’s even harder in the wind.

I believe he won some advocates golf tour event, that granted him a sponsors exemption into The Farmers, but then he got COVID so he could not play (spot was filled by a guy named Willie Mack). Then The Honda stepped up and invited him, along with The API, and The Genesis. I take a lot of flack for saying that exemptions are there for the committees to use as they please but at least guys like Steph and Tony Romo draw viewers (and we sneaky good to boot). He is a nice story, but he's not close to being a PGA Tour player, maybe he gets there but geez it ain't close right now.

Oh boy. Jones paired with Holmes tomorrow. You want to talk about pace of play issues? There might not be a faster player on tour than Jones, and Holmes is notoriously slow. Like one of the slowest. Hope this doesn’t mess with Jones as he’s a joy to watch. Rooting for him big time.

Oh man I didn’t realise that. Can definitely change the outcome. I can never play with anyone slow. It gets in my head and I’m toast...

I really like this course. No big names but enjoying the pros being challenged.

Yes.  I've lamented the less than stellar field, but on the bright side we get to see some unheralded players who are still very damned good, battling for a high finish which would be very meaningful to them.  Great pressure for these players coming down the stretch, and interesting to watch from that perspective.

The “Fast Matt Jones vs Slow JB Holmes” topic was also discussed on today’s FirstCut podcast (time stamp ~14m40s).

if I the slow play gets too much... should Matt Jones “do a Brooks Koepka” eg I recall BK said he’d take a toilet break , to ensure his group gets put formally “on the clock ”  so that they have to speed-up??

I'm one who doesn't care that he got the exemption (and willie mack too) only because they're black. Those spots are sponsor's exemptions and if Tony Romo can get one then why not these guys.

Now, I hope that the exemptions were combined with stuff we don't see on camera. I hope that these guys were able to bring minority kids to the event during the week and raise awareness to the game. I hope there are guys that do that often regardless of race. Get kids who aren't aware of the game to these events. Raise awareness. Get more kids playing, regardless of race.

Now, I will have a problem if johnson and mack get "special treatment" by the tour by allowing them to get more exemptions than the rules call for. I think the limit is around 6 total.

That bridge was crossed 20-25yrs ago my friend with First Tee development.......golf still isn't a mainstream sport with access to all ......aspiration to be Lee Elder, Tiger and the like just isn't there for the masses......Basketball and Football rule the roost ......why aren't there many blacks in hockey? Same concept.....great sport but not lifted up in said communities......

Back on topic, poor Matt Jones.....patience will be tested today

There was a story in A Good Walk Spoiled I believe it was, where Jim Thorpe was given 300 sets of clubs to get kids in inner city Buffalo playing golf.  It was all a great idea except that he barely had double digits in terms of kids who wanted them.

Just because it's there doesn't mean there will be any interest.  But unfortunately we're in an environment where appearing to do something is more important than actually doing something.  Starting with caddy programs would probably be more effective in growing interest than simply handing out clubs, but that would require effort and planning.  Not to mention people value things they are given far less than things earned/desired.  But it's a lot easier to say "we've given this to them look how great we are" and walk away.

Yeah, when you have 90% kids hoping to "make it" to the NBA ,you know your priorities are askew

Given I was a 5'8" white guy in high school who couldn't jump, and had the same thoughts.... guess I can't throw stones.  🤪

ETA: And nothing has changed since.  Except I can't jump even more....

But what you say is true.....like I mentioned about Hockey , it's just the dynamics of what we're exposed to........
