Absolutely my friend.

I won’t bore us with my whole story ( you’re welcome 😉) but the gist is that I have alwasy been around the game from the “helps” side of it.   Grandpa who raised me built courses as a equipment operator , and watched on TV. He never played a round.  And he loved the game. It pains me now to think that he never played something that he cared so much for.  But he believed that it was above his status or station in life.  This was the early 90s ish , so maybe it was? ...., but really not .    Fast forward to 1995 -2001 I worked at a 36 hole private course where I was on the maintenance staff.  Much like the movie caddie shack , the help was only allowed to play on a certain day of the week. From 4pm  til dark as I recall. Couldn’t come into the club house or pro shop in work clothes etc.  So I worked there. Watched it. But never played.

didnt play until 2014 . Which was after I was a married adult , with a well established business etc. even then I recall the fear in asking for info on a membership.  I don’t know why I felt that way. But I did.  Fast forward to now and I have a 12 year old who holds a junior membership to a course that his great grandfather shaped. He thinks nothing of this.even though I’ve explained it.  But to me it is simply a great irony , an amazing thing.

said that short version ( ha!) to say , I can’t imagine how much more foreign it would be to a kid who never seen the inside of a club like I had , or watched it on tv since birth.  I’d call it next to impossible to imagine how they’d get the courage or impetus to try it out.  If we grow the game , this is how / where and whom it should be done with , Not dumbing it down for more drunk frat boys . Lol.

So that is interesting.  I wonder what changed between the time of Hogan/Nelson et al. who grew up as caddies and got into the game, and your grandfather's time that would have put that mindset in his mind.

The attitude still exists among some members, unfortunately.  I worked out at a gym a few years ago, and was talking to a guy who worked grounds crew on the "premier" club in our area.  Told me how one time he was working in a bunker and a guy went to putt, so he just stopped raking and waited for him, and the guy turned around and yelled at him, "Don't you look at me while I'm putting."  So some idiots do make it tougher to want to play.  My wife doesn't like going to my golf club over some old ladies at a dinner after a tournament I did well in, and she had joined me after.

Amazing how much where and who can impact so much.

Oh the stories I can tell you about jerk golfers while I worked maintenance .    Some wanted you to cut the engine off of the mower every shot , for Pete’s sake it would take 6 weeks t mow a fairway at that rate.  And on top of it we were instructed to idle down if close and then go.  Never t cut it off.   But - if that member callled in you’d get reamed for disturbing Them. So a lose lose deal.

but the worse we’re the people who refused to acknowledge your existence.  You might say “ good morning sir “ or similar in passing and they’d just ignore you and not speak.

it’s funny being on the other side now.  I go out of my way to strike up a conversation, and let the person know I value them and that I know I’m in their way not the other way around.

Matt Jones may be my new favorite player that I have never heard of.  Fast play, camera just catches him sometimes he is so fast to swing.  Old school controlled draw when everyone else hitting cuts.  And that murdered out Newport 2 custom.  Wow.  Need more shots of that putter.  Can't find a WITB with it.  Hope he holds on.

Yes, golf has more access than is popularly thought, but it's still a sport for those with means more so than many others.

If you mean playing in your backyard or at the park, then yes. Basketball, soccer and tennis can be cheaper. But if you put a kid into ANY kind of league, a golf membership is cheaper or the same. The post I was replying to was talking about hockey. League dues are at least $400 plus equipment and you get what? 22ish 1 hour games and practices? For the amount of time spent, a junior golf membership is an absolute steal.

Edit: If you can’t come up with $450 once a year you should’ve thought twice about having kids.

BUt that is the point:  there's not much stopping them from playing those games.  And while it's less so nowadays, there are school teams if you are good enough that will result in a lot of costs picked up.  But while you can find out that Joey down at the playground can really hoop, if Joey can't get on a golf course, you have no idea how or if he can play.

As to the add.... we could go on and on over that one!

Not sure what Notah and Feherty were talkin about the latest short miss goin left. CT was aimin left the whole way. Was shouting at the screen when Notah first said nothing in this and looked up to see CT lining up way left on this shorty. Then they blamed it on the nonexistent break. My god.

We have club storage, but a lot of members still bring their clubs home, and/or have an electric cart.  So they will drive up to the back shop door, and the expectation is the kids come out and get it it out of the car.  What I can't stand are the people who don't get out of the car!  I get it if the kid beats you to it, but to me, it shows respect for the kid that you at least get out of the car. There are some little old ladies who could never lift it out of their car, and I have no problem with them getting the kids to move things.  But even a number of them get out of the car.  BUt some able bodied people just sit there like they are super important.

I once yelled at one lady who started chewing out a backshop kid.  She didn't like it when I pointed out that her crap, does in fact stink.  But they are backshop staff, not personal servants.
