Cavity back irons with traditional lofts?

xKono

Recommended Posts

Im looking into new irons and I was wondering if there are cavity backs or GI irons with traditional lofts? Im currently averaging 175 - 180 yards with my 2008 Taylormade burner Plus 7i, and I don't see the need to hit a 7i 200 yards. I want to stick to cavity back for some forgiveness but also it seems like players distance are all at least $500 more than GIs.

They haven't actually changed the lofts, lofts are just mathematical measurements. Only the numbers on the bottom of the club have changed. What is the difference between hitting a 7 iron 200yds or a 6 iron 200yds if you have the correct gaps?

Ditto ...

Or get an older sets of Ping Eye 2s (or Titleists if you want something more "traditional").

Because it sounds way more bad a** to hit a 7 iron that far. 🤣

I only hit my 7 iron about 140, so there is that.

I guess because Ill probably need another wedge in my bag if my P wedge is now 135 yards, and I struggle to hit strongly lofted clubs so the even stronger lofted 5i which is now a 4i will probably be left in the back and Ill hit hybrid every time instead.

I have a VERY strong lofted iron set. I'm like you at the end of the day, i roll my eyes at the strong lofted irons and see it for what it is...Mostly a way to fool people into thinking they are hitting it further

However it doesnt actually cost me anything. My iron set as a 4-GW set, is the exact same lofts give or take, as my 3-PW set from 1987.

So i still just buy an iron set, and then 2 wedges. Same cost, same deal etc.

Where i do genuinely hate stronger lofts, is when they "bunch" too many irons at the low end (Ie, a 19 degree 4 iron, than a 21 degree 5 iron)....That makes no sense. That's the same club to 99% of golfers

From 2015 I played 716CB's with traditional specs.  Late 2019 bought new set 620 MBs and set of CBs.  Really enjoy both heads so currently have a blended set in the bag with brand new Tensei AV White AM "S" shafts.

People talk about the number of the sole and lofts, neither should make a difference, yet they do to some people, like me that grew up in golf with more traditional lofts.  That means, my PW is 47, stronger PW lofts are 45 & 46.  Though I don't care if someone' plays them, it's scary weird to me.  However, being a P&L guy, at least OEM's have found a way with minimal investment, to make more money.

I play to a "4" now, 70yrs old, and my 7i is 150yds...  I smiled when recently someone announces on a Par 3 he just hit PW or 9i when I hit 8-7i, yet he mishits his iron, and it ended in the drink.  😛  What's odd a lot of people have trouble hitting stronger lofted clubs.  Remember, strong lofts are the reason OEM's invented hybrid replacement irons, cause "JOE average" couldn't hit his  irons past 6 with traditional lofts.   So, along comes hybrids and strong lofted irons.

The difference is having to relearn all your club distances, for full shots and everything in between.  Not a big deal for some, but an undesirable for others

I keep a laminated cheat sheet in my golf bag:

What did i normally hit = X

What do i hit here = X + 1

You can buy Ping G425 irons in a custom "Retro Spec" configuration and that will get you a 4 iron at 22, 5 iron at 25, 6 at 28, 7 at 32, 8 at 37, 9 at 42, P at 47. That's about 3 degrees weaker than most GI cavity backs.

Srixon, Cobra, Mizuno, Taylormade, and Callaway all allow for 2 degree weaker lofts on custom orders but I think the Ping Retro specs are still about a degree weaker than the customized options from the preceding manufacturers.

But any contemporary GI lofts, stock or custom, are still stronger than what is considered traditional, e.g., Mizuno MP-20 blades:

4 at 24, 5 at 27, 6 at 30, 7 at 34, 8 at 38, 9 at 24, and P at 46.

Your Burner Plus irons and the current P790 are separated by a whopping 1.5* and your 7i is 1/4" longer than the standard 790.

Wasn't there a time when a PW was something like 50 or 52? I can't recall, but I thought I watched some old Shell's Wonderful World of Golf and it was a match in the 60s. I thought I recall them saying something like that, but now I can't put my finger on it.

Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem when the numbers go away.    I'm too old to try and remember what the distance order is supposed to be for my "A", "G", and "U" gap wedges I'd have to start adding to the set.

does "A" + 1 = "G" or is it "A" - 1 = "G"   🙂

OMG, a simple question was asked... any of the last several years Wilson players irons will do what you are looking for V4, V6, new CB (I don’t think it follows suit as in V8) under rated clubs. You will find a nice set of the later models for your price point.

Lol didn't think this was opening a can of worms, thanks for the suggestion!
