Wasn't there a time when a PW was something like 50 or 52? I can't recall, but I thought I watched some old Shell's Wonderful World of Golf and it was a match in the 60s. I thought I recall them saying something like that, but now I can't put my finger on it.

Yes, there was, back in the 60s even 70s.  PW was 50 and 3i was 22'  When I took up the game 30yrs back, I went to Mizuno MP blades +/- eight months after taking up the game.  They were traditionally lofted clubs, 36' 7i and 50' PW and 2i was 20', 1i was 17' - same as my current 718 T-MB 2i and 620MB 7i is 35'.  What really got some attention back then was Mizuno MP-29's.  They had stronger lofts, longer heel to toe blades essentially the same specs as my 620MBs.  They were sweet.

Unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem when the numbers go away.    I'm too old to try and remember what the distance order is supposed to be for my "A", "G", and "U" gap wedges I'd have to start adding to the set.

does "A" + 1 = "G" or is it "A" - 1 = "G"   🙂

LOL that ain't nothing--- The other day it was CPO and one of my scramble partners asked me to bring his "gap wedge" Now he had Callaway clubs and I had to ask what the gap was. Oh he said the "A" wedge

Im looking into new irons and I was wondering if there are cavity backs or GI irons with traditional lofts? Im currently averaging 175 - 180 yards with my 2008 Taylormade burner Plus 7i, and I don't see the need to hit a 7i 200 yards. I want to stick to cavity back for some forgiveness but also it seems like players distance are all at least $500 more than GIs.

Wishon 565MC. 7i is 34°, minimal offset, forgiving and 5 step forging gives great feel.

I just picked up a set of Nike VR II Pro Combo CB's yesterday and when I looked up the specs, Came out off a 47* PW, 35* 7i, so that's not to bad.  Have to say, they look fantastic at address as well.

Ben Hogan Edge.  I've seen elsewhere that they're updating the line this spring, but the current version has a 34* seven iron.

OP don't sleep on the Edges; they have more traditional lofts but are a club longer than the set of strong lofted cavity backs that I currently play. Completely different shafts so it's not a pure apples to apples comparison, but I'm confident they'd still be a tiny bit longer with the equivalent shafts.

Ben Hogan Edge irons are really good. I had to switch it up and went with PXG 0211's, but now I'm wishing I had just gone for a better shaft change instead.

One thing I will say is that the KBS Tour V stiffs I had in the hogans started bending near the hosel after less than a year of use, and I don't even play as frequently as some guys. I played 38 times in 2020 for reference, so it should've been around there. I still have the pulls if you want pics.

I just hope the next iteration of the Edge irons has a set matching gap wedge, instead of only going from 4-P. I  only carry 2 specialty wedges to try and simplify my wedge game. I used to carry 4, and it got out of hand.
