Rickie Playing Black Irons?

Recommended Posts

Edit: I was wrong lol

I'm surprised no one identified the exact iron already, but the black one appears to be the 2019 ForgedTec, I know (or think I know) because I have them.

https://www.cobragolf.com/king-forged-tec-black-irons

They are great irons, but they are pretty chunky.  Can't imagine anyone playing blades (esp. Rickie's blades) and switching to these, except maybe in long irons.  Dramatic change would be an understatement.  But whatever you gotta do I guess.  🙂

Hope to see they guy play some better golf soon either way.

don't believe they are forged tech, think they are the full cavity version of the King Forged, same as Dufner plays except black

I’m probably the biggest Rickie Fan you’ll ever meet. It feels like just a bit ago when he was playing great golf, placing runner up at the 2018 masters, and then winning the 2019 Waste Management. I think it’s relatively obvious that Rickie is a great ball striker, but since all of the recent swing changes he’s been making he’s still getting used to his swing. I think he’s just in a bit of a slump. He will come out of it, and he already slowly is. He finished top 10 in the 2021 PGA Championship and if he had not missed the par putt on 18 he would have been top 5. For example, take Jordan speith. He just won the Valero and came in 2nd at the 2021 Open, after literally nothing good for about 4 years. Rickie will get better. I believe in him.

He’s playing TP5x now.  Used to play Pro V1. Isn’t that a big difference in spin?

I think it is. While the TP5 and ProV1 are still different models, the x’s of each models go for the same thing. It’s low spin on driver, but just a bit more spin on the long-mid irons while still a decent amount of green side spin. While on the other hand, the normal versions, are super low spin on driver, but also relatively low spin on long-mid irons which contributes to then going a bit straighter, but less spin, and then of course they spin great around the green. So yes, not a whole lot of difference for us but for Rickie, it’s a ton. It’s gonna take some getting used to. I think even going to just the TP5 instead of TP5x would help since it would be more like the prov1. But then again, he still needs to get used to the way the ball feels, rolls and spins, so that’s a roller coaster of it’s own.

I'm not hating on the guy but I believe that it is due in part to the married life? Perhaps he doesn't have enough time to be selfish and dedicate more time for practice ? That's just a thought. Another would be that he needs to hear more people hating on him so that he can uncover whatever he did so that he can repeat the mindset he had when he won The Players.

Totally. Getting married puts a hualt to your game and probably his mindset too. And yeah whatever mindset that was, the one where he decided to make 3 birdies and 1 eagle in the last 6 holes to get into a playoff, the one where he birdied the 17th 3 times in a row, yeah he could benefit from finding that again😂

I find it odd and kind of sad a tour player with a sponsorship has to lead tape his clubs to get the spec he likes. I am not anti lead tape at all and use it at times but I don't have a big R&D department and tour van at my disposal.

Ha, maybe Cobra clubs do suck after all.

I have the RF proto's and the hitting area is the same as Cobra's last MB which I played prior. I believe the sole is also the same so not sure why he would not have confidence in the new sticks. I loved the King forged MB's. I felt even though they were small they were easy to hit and get good results. Sole was perfect for my swing. The RF proto's just have about the best shape I have seen in an iron. I think he is just really struggling with swing changes and it can be easier to switch clubs and maybe feel like he has more room for error. Plus his putting is not even close to what it once was.

Agree, have the RF Forged MBs.

Lead tape is almost always simple personal preference. Cobra will do whatever Rickie wants (hence tungsten plugs in his clubs for ages), so lead tape just means he doesn't bother asking them to, not because they can't/won't.

Lead tape applied to the heads of golf clubs has always been prevalent among Tour players.

I also don't believe there's much in them, owning andplaying both sets as well. RF protos are sharper looking and i'd alost go as far to say the MBs are a touch smaller in the face. I think the soles are also slightly different, RF proto seems more milled grind, whereas MBs have a slightly more rounded edge.

Either way, i don't feel they're super hard to hit, but a pro's definition and needs are different than a casual golfer like myself.

Clubs, fittings, adjustments etc are so readilly available to these guys, why not experiment every week on different clubs and like Morikawa, different conditions.

Agree. RF protos are the best looking blade i've seen, at least recently.

100%. Tip weights move horizontal cog.   Even if minute amounts. Most can feel the difference, and hate that feeling.
