Hijack alert!!!

Well done you two!

Good point I'll start another thread.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Release does not need to be coerced, it happens.

I couldn't disagree more.

I see the issue now - you associate lag with "holding" angles whereas I see lag as a consequence of mechanics that have nothing to do with holding back anything.

This is what I'm saying. I don't see lag as holding angles - I think that far too many ams see it that way and YouTube videos often mislead.

Ok I but I've never said lag was holding angles either just to be honest.

Ditto, it took me a while to get used to him but I enjoy his channel. It's not swing orientated rather more course management. I find that I am picking up some useful things when i watch his stuff even if it's just more reinforcement to play within yourself.

I’ve found the stuff on YouTube not that useful. The way the algorithm works incentivises long videos (minutes watched = money I believe). It’s a tough slog getting through a 15 min video that should really be 90 seconds.

I’m far more into Instagram, with three go-tos

- Monte

- Mike Bender. Teaches the swing I like (as I feel that an OTT slicer like me should aim for the opposite pattern)
- Shauheen Nakhjavani. More malleable than Bender

All very different, all well known here, all excellent IMO.

In no particular order, with my comments as to what I like or dislike:

Shawn Clements: Entertaining personality but repetitive themes. Not sure I understand the squat down then jump up to get the power. It was hard for me to sync. Plus, I took his instruction too literally and got kicked off my local course for tearing up the grass after putting with a grass whip for four holes.

Clay Ballard: When I watch a single video for a tip, his stuff seems to make sense to me. But I'm not usually able to capitalize on it, probably from something else that does not match up in my swing. That leads me down a rabbit-hole trying to get his whole swing methodology. I will say, though, that when I first started golf (about a year or so ago?), he responded to my email personally and gave me some honest advice. He said not to try to build a swing around a bunch of different systems. He said to pick one and go with it completely, as trying to mix and match pieces and parts will just make a disjointed swing that would not work at all. And he did not try to pressure me into his, he said to pick any one and learn it. He probably did not pressure me because he'd heard about me using the grass whip on the putting green and did not want a golfer with my lack of skills being associated with his name (for liability reasons).

Rotary Swing: No-go. Reminded me too much of the mullet I wore in high school in the 80s. And I always want to watch the movie "Joe Dirt" when I am done (again, the pseudo-mullet).

Adam Bazelgette: Similar to Clay. Rabbit hole for me.

Danny Maude: I really like this channel. Clear instruction with reason why different things are important, especially for the body/modern release. But his thick mop makes me long for the days long ago when my hair was not grey and thin. Do you think he thinks he looks taller with the 8" pompadour?

Monte: 5-Stars. Love the counter-culture, non-conformist attitude as well (see remark about grass whip putting, above). Bought many of his course. Easy to understand. Great price and value and does not seem like he is trying to upsell you into something else.

Bradley Hughes: 5-Stars. Kept coming back to his youtube stuff, just because it helped me understand how something that happens here has a big affect on something over there. Cool swing (to me). Bad-a** accent, like he just got done wrestling and alligator and drinking a Fosters, and is going to box a kangaroo when the video is over. I bought his drill series and am in drill three now. So far, I have gotten consistently better with each passing week. And more importantly as a beginner, I understand the swing enough to know what to look for when my swing gets out of whack. It's usually nowhere I would have thought before I watched his videos on his pay site. Great deal on that, BTW. Cheap price but a LOT of short videos that are a much higher quality than the ones for free on youtube.

Ju Ju swing: This guy is a former 1- or two time WLD champion, strictly for my driver swing. It was one of those impulsive purchases. The course is expensive, but my wife had bought another vacuum cleaner that we didn't need to go with the other four because this one has a light on it. I told her that she doesn't even vacuum when it is daylight, so what difference will it make. She made fun of my thinning, grey hair and told me that it my mullet makes me look stupid. So I went to my man cave (you might call it a "dog house"). When I was done weeping and cradling my grass whip, I bought the Ju Ju Swing Course just for spite!!! Just got into it, so not sure yet.

PM me directly if you want any tips on how to ruin your swing.

Other guys are probably great but Ive looked at a lot of videos and instruction and these are the only guys that explain stuff in a way that I can apply to the range/course.

Jake Hutt, even if it doesn't help you at all you've only invested about 30 seconds of your life.

I appreciate all these answers.  And thanks to the guy who mentioned Malaska....I liked his videos.

but this just makes me think how impossible it must be to find an instructor in real life.

my game is in desperate need of some help...I literally haven’t played a round in seven months because I CAN NOT hit a driver.  It used to be a solid club for me....but I can’t figure out what’s going on.  I’d like to go see someone but feel it’s an absolute cr@pshoot finding one.

For those interested in a "Best of Athletic Motion Golf" type set of videos - see below.

The first several videos (starting from link below) focus on the move from the top, getting the hands more in front of the body, the torque required to release the club, etc.   Pretty good stuff.  Also nice because it's just the meat of the original videos.

I was already hip to Jake but thanks for turning me on to Larry’s channel. Really good drills and concepts.

Apparently he coaches Matt from TXG who has one of the better Am swings I’ve seen.

Chris Ryan gives the best instruction in my opinion, very clear and concise and he's focuses on teaching alone.  Others include Art of Simple Golf and Danny Maude.  Me and My Golf has been good over the years but they are barely on YouTube any more.  Top Speed just repeats the same issue in every video (lag, lag, lag) but he does demonstrate some good points overall.  Crossfield and others aren't really just teaching, they demo clubs, have travel vlogs, etc. to they are only an occasional teaching stop.  And Crossfield, although I like him, is pushing his schtick of contrarian on every issue which gets old.  Seems like a lot of these YouTubers are running their course and just repeating videos and topics now too.
