Apex 21 DCB VS G425 Irons

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Apex 19 irons, and they are great irons. I also really like Ping irons as well. I am just wondering if any of you have compared these irons and your thoughts on them. I will be playing graphite shafts in them, and I think Ping offers better shafts than Callaway in all their clubs, Callaway shafts are just too light. I see a lot of great reviews for both clubs.

I haven’t hit either. But the 2nd Swing You Tube site has a good comparison video on them and the SIM2 Max

DCB's feel terrific, 425 like a plank.

I demoed about 12 different irons over the winter and without question the crappiest feeling and performing was the Ping

I demoed the DCBs, G425s, and HMPs, all with their stock graphite shaft.  The G425s sounded the worst, but performed the best.  HMPs were second.  DCBs were a distant third.  Bought the G425s and haven't looked back since.  They are so easy to hit, it's almost like cheating.

And I thought DCB was the biggest disappointment I’ve hit all year. I thought it would be closer to Apex and wasn’t even close.  Very high pitched and tinny feeling. G425 doesn’t feel good or bad. Just feels like a Ping. G425’s dispersion is pretty special front to back for a game improvement iron.

My comparison is the Calla Mavrik Max (yes, I know it's not Apex) and the G425.

Hit G425 in local shop when the Ping guy came through in January. It felt solid, especially with the Altus CB Slate shaft (counterbalanced with AWT technology - meaning the longer shafts are lighter than the shorter shafts. Helps with long end launch, and lessens short-end ballooning).

Along with earlier Altus CB shafts, the Altus CB Slate is graphite version of the popular steel AWT 2.0.

Also hit the Mavrik MAX, which is SGI with a bit of offset but really flew well. Several decent senior golfers have spoken highly of the MAX.

Talked about the new Apex line with veteran fitter who was not that impressed with the DCB. He said players needing that much help could buy the Calla Bertha B21 and save $400. Again, I haven't hit the DCB, so I can't say first hand how it feels or flies.

Um, you need to look a little closer at the shafts that Callaway offers. You can order Callaway irons with heavier Recoils, MMTs, Fujikura, Steefibers etc, most will have upcharges, but they are offered. So this is NOT a factor unless there is a difference in cost of upgrading shafts.

I am referring to off the shelf. Callaway 50 gram shaft is just way to light for me.

Stock shaft is 64-68 grams depending on flex,  if you work with a them on the phone, you might be able to order the 75g version of the dart that is offered on the standard Apex for no or minimal upcharge.  Nothing wrong with the Ping irons either, very solid set, just didn't want you to make the decision with incorrect data.

I have owned both, actually still do. The Pings sit in my office and the DCB's are in the bag being used. I have steel shafts, so cannot comment on the graphite, but the DCB's feel so much better than the Pings and look better to my eye as well. Obviously, everyone has different opinions and clubs fir everyone different.

No offense to OP, but I see people asking these types of questions all the time and everyone is different so you will get differing opinions. Obviously, you need to go hit them, hopefully off grass too. I don't trust the big box flight monitors.....I cannot ever hit my 8 irons 180 yards, but they all seem to tell me I can with the clubs they want to sell me!

I am putting the Cobra F9 irons back in the bag, they work. The best club in the G425 set is the 9 iron for chipping, unreal.  I have a real struggle with the gap wedge , as it just does not feel the shoes of the Glide wedge. The Glide is so versatile at what it does.

As the seemingly interminable wait for my G425 irons continues (fitted with SF i110 S), I just used some Callaway credit on a set of DCB 6-AW with MMT 105 TX shafts (ss 2x).  After clearing up a back-order situation, they got built and shipped super-quickly.

Look great, and hoping to get them out for their first “run” this evening.  Ordered these blind, so no idea how these will work for me, with the heads, the shafts, the soft-stepping, etc.

Follow up to my earlier post about the DCB with MMT TX ss2x.  Took them out for 9 holes tonight, and I don’t think they are going to work for me.  I can usually tell very quickly when a combo isn’t going to work, and when a combo is in the ballpark and either works, or deserves more testing.

This DCB/MMT 105 TX combo just didn’t work well at all, and when I got home, I tested the swing weight and it was super-high, like D4-D5.  I was used to many graphite shafted sets being low SW, which I can then easily bump up a bit with lead tape.  These DCB’s felt like swinging sledge-hammers to me.  Anyway, looks like I will be taking advantage of Callaway’s 30-day return policy, which is how I ended up with this set in the first place.  YMMV.

Playing Apex vs 425’s is like having sex with a supermodel vs. your wife. The end result may be similar, but the experience is very different.
