Craigie's First WITB

Recommended Posts

So here's my first ever WITB. Been playing since September(work scramble), with a bunch of range trips and a few rounds of 9/12/18 holes since then. I've wheeled, dealed & bargain hunted to get to where I am so here it is in all it's glory. All in the clubs have cost me less than $350 used. The bag is the only thing I bought new.

Driver & 3w: Aeroburner 10.5* & 16.5 HL

Hybrid: RBZ 4 22*: Drove up the road for it and cost me $60. Love this thing! I hit it from everywhere, tee, rough, fairway. I'd hit it from water if the ball was floating.

Irons: 5-pw: Supersteel Burners. I love these! Got them for $25!

Wedges: Bought all of these on impulse and I regret it. I used someone else's clubs for my work golf day which were Rbladez and thought they were great. So I saw the AW/SW/LW and got them. I don't HATE them but I dont LOVE them. And around the green that's an issue I think. After some research, I plan on replacing them with Cleveland CBX/CBX2's, probably 50/54 or 52/56 combo. I don't want 4 wedges in the bag. More wedges = more decisions = more problems.

Putter: These(yes, plural), were very inexpensive but there's method to my madness. One is an Odyssey Mini T, the other is a Brassie Bullet .444. One blade/one mallet. I plan on using both this spring and see what style I like most and going from there. If I like both I have problems. If I like neither I guess I have bigger problems?

Bag: I bought the Vice bag brand new last month.

Welcome to WRX and welcome to the great game of golf. For the money you did real well on your club selections. Yes wedges are one of the most important things to get in tuned with your game. And I agree 100% on more wedges add to more confusion. Short game is the key to strokes gained or saved

Well done on your first set of clubs!  I wouldn't be as hard on your wedges as you are.  They are fine.  It's all about technique with wedges and developing some feel which takes practice.  I would be surprised if the Clevelands that you're wanting to get get will be a game changer for you.  That's not to say that there's anything wrong with them it's just that the wedge game is more about the operator than the implements.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Appreciate the feedback! I did some research on high handicapper wedges and they all mentioned the CBX2's which is why I mentioned them. Plus I'd rather have less clubs in the bag than more. I'm thinking I'd rather be good with 12 clubs than average with 14. Simplfy the decisions and play more with less clubs which should, in theory, make me better!

Haha right! I'm actually pretty decent with the irons too. They even came with a Big Bertha 3w that I gave away for free!

So the past 6 months have led to some new updates. The 3w wasn't working so I sold it and the buyer asked about the driver so it went too, both have been replaced by the F8. The RBZ left the bag when I picked up the new irons and I filled the gap with the F9. The JPX919 Hot Metal irons are great, been really happy with them since I got them. The 52 Vokey was free from a friend, 56 is a cheap little find locally. New PW is 45 so might look to go 50/56 in wedges. Putter will be changed in the next week or two.

I carry 12 as SOP but that leaves room at either end if I need to add a speciality club for a different course. Good example on my signature I show the 60* wedge-- Usually I do not carry it unless the course has really fluffy green side bunkers. As my SOP I usually carry only 2 wedges. And as you have observed it cuts back on confusion and second guessing yourself. I started playing golf a long time ago and all of the sand wedges we had were around 55 56* and we learned to work them. Did not need a gap wedge because most stock PWs were 50 to 52*. I still do play "traditional " lofts

Had a few changes to what I'm playing so thought I'd update this! Full bag is as follows:

Cobra Radspeed XB 10.5* - Hzrdus Smoke im10 5.5

Cobra F9 5w 18.5* - Hzrdus Smoke im10 5.5

Mizuno JPX921 Fli-Hi 4h 20* - Recoil ESX 460

Mizuno JPX919 Hot Metal 5-PW - DG120 S300. Full disclosure, these shafts are a bit too much for me so will look to have these changed. My 40th birthday is coming up soon so it's a perfect time to ask for new irons right?

Cleveland CBX2 Black Satin 50/54/58 - stock wedge shafts

Have been playing the Vice Tour ball this year and liking them a lot so far.

Very nice bag!  If you like the irons would you consider getting them

re-shafted with more appropriate shafts?

Either going to do that or maybe get the 921's. Think I'm going to do an iron fitting in the fall and see where that takes me.
