Was I wrong?

I think you should’ve let him hit it. Then was he was leaving, go sit behind the wheel of his car with your hand out asking for the keys so you can take his car out for a test drive.

OP: You handled the situation well.

This reminds me: It's not uncommon for patrons to ask musicians at gigs if they can sit in.  Bear in mind that instruments usually cost in the thousands of $$, and the fact it's a paid gig--it's their place of work!

Patron: "Hey man, mind if I sit in?  I'm a pro drummer, man."

Drummer: "Do you mind if I take your wife for a spin?"

Patron: Walks away pissed off

Wow...what a strange thing to do.  Basic manners should tell you not to touch other people's property w/out asking.  You did nothing wrong OP.

Strange thing about PXG irons....similar thing happened to me at the range.  Older gentlemen in the next bay saw my setup and asked a ton of questions about it.  Really nice guy, very pleasant, so I offered to let him swing away with the 7 iron.  The smile on his face was worth it and his eyes lit up once I told him to check out pricing at the PXG ebay store.  PXG still has that mystique about it, but it's really an affordable brand nowadays.

I’m a left handed player, and was at my club’s driving range recently trying to break in a new set of irons.

There was another LH next to me and he noticed they were PXG. He started going on about new equipment not making anyone better, blah blah.

The guy was an awful golfer, laying sod all over the place. He was playing very old clubs, which really doesn’t matter, but his swing was beyond bad. Anyway, I could sense him watching me hit the new irons, and he strolled back to my bag and pulled out a club, then asked if he could give them a try.

I got a little annoyed he went into my bag, and told him, “No, I’d rather you didn’t, put the club back and please keep away from my bag”. He gave me a look, but before he could say anything I told him, “you just went on for 5 minutes about how new clubs can’t help anyone, and now you’re looking to hit mine?”

The guy stormed away, and I kind of felt bad, but honestly, I didn’t want him hitting my clubs. Two guys hitting near me heard the entire exchange and said I’d done nothing wrong. Still, I’m wondering what you guys think.... was I being a jerk?

No you were not. That guy had balls as big as church bells to ask you that after his comments. What range were you at in the area If I may ask???

It was in Barefoot, North Myrtle Beach.

We have a great bunch of guys here for the most part, and 4 nice courses. You rarely run into someone with what I call a “country club” attitude. I’m sure there are some, but they don’t play in the leagues or money games I do.

Most people here just really enjoy golf, and the staff and members make it a nice, friendly place to live.

The guy was most likely a snowbird. I’ve been here 10 years and never saw him before.

No way...he was the one being rude by reaching into your bag.

Maybe if it was a friend/golfing buddy, no problem...but even then they should ask first before grabbing.

You're entirely within your rights refusing to let the guy beat up your new irons. Lefty solidarity notwithstanding.

In retrospect you could have been more pleasant in the way you said no but we don't always come up with the most polite phrasing when someone comes out of nowhere with something like that.

Kinda reminds me of my racing days--- Someone that had never drove a race car would ask to drive mine or someone elses. I got fed up and put the following sign on my dash

Don't ask to drive my race car

I won't ask to &$%# your wife or daughter

Lol, great story... you’re a character, Big Stu!!!

We’ve actually talked a bunch of times before on another site... I think I started a get well thread there after your accident.

Now it’s my turn, Ive been on the mend also the last few weeks with a back issue also.

This getting old thing is highly overrated, but as they say, it definitely beats the alternative. Once I’m able to get out there again and play, I’ll definitely stop down to Indigo and we’ll meet up. Do they still have that weekly game with lunch and a raffle afterward? I played in it many times a few years back. Lots of fun, and the people who run that place are great.

Yes, exactly.

He caught me off guard when he did what he did. Sometimes in those situations you can beat yourself up afterward wondering if you would have said things differently if you had a moment to think.

That’s  why I started this thread. I’m relieved the people here have no issue with how I reacted.

Gotta love the know-it-alls on the range. But nothing beats getting paired with a guy with a $2,500 bag who tops it 15 yards on the first tee

First tee nerves.

As for the op's question:  If a stranger touches my clubs, he better be ready to have my 3 iron swung at his head.

Buddy:  Hit them all you want.

Stranger:  GTF back

Reminds me of the movie Stripes:

Leon: Ooooooh.
Psycho: You just made the list, buddy. Also, I don't like no one touching my stuff. So just keep your meathooks off. If I catch any of you guys in my stuff... I'll kill ya. And I don't like nobody touching me. Any of you homos touch me... I'll kill ya.

LOL I practiced in them. Wind dead in my face on range at Indigo--- Really did not care I was working on spine angle-- LOL was hitting my old Ping 1 iron which is normally about a 6 ft high cut nasty and ugly-- Today would go out about 90 yards or so and baloon up darn near stopping in Air. Glen Davis the golf instructor was laughing and remarked " you have not hit that 1 iron that high in 10 years" Had a ball over at the putting green turning the 56* wide open and hitting my "uptown Charlie Brown" shot standing it up in the wind and dropping it straight down dead stop.

You handled it extremely well, don’t doubt yourself for behaving like a mature adult male and clearly setting boundaries on what behavior was acceptable.

Or better still:

"I was at the range today hitting balls next to a fellow lefty who had some nice looking PXG irons. Anyway, after I had broken the ice with a few thoughtful comments on the cost of golf gear, I thought he wouldn't mind if I grabbed one of his clubs and gave it a swing. Boy was I wrong!"🤣
