Was I wrong?

That might be the case for a public range somewhere, but at a private club range you are kinda expected to interact with other members, not be an introverted reclusive jerk all the time.  It's part of the social aspect of a club.

I disagree. If you are on the range to practice then you keep to yourself & people let you be... nothing about that is being a jerk.

The range is for practicing it’s not exclusively a social club. Sure people socialize there, but you can socialize at the bar or clubhouse or etc...

I’ve been at a private club the better part of 20 years. You can easily tell who is on the range ‘working on things’ & who is there to chat.

The only thing ‘expected’ of me is paying my dues and my monthly minimums.

But in the end: different strikes for different folks.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

The problem with that mentality is you can't know the alternative approach wouldn't have worked.  So you have no clue in this situation if it could have been resolved in a friendly way, because no one tried.  Instead, you ended up with 2 stupid reactions escalating a meaningless situation.  Now, if you had TRIED to take the high road, and there was no response, and then you had that reaction....ok, you'd have a point.  But that's not what happened.  Oh, and joking about something does not mean you're killing them with kindness, in fact, many times the joke is actually making fun of what they just did.

And the idea that this guy was a "bully", what the heck are you guys talking about?  He went over to a golf bag on a private range, it's not like he shoved the guy and then went toe to toe trying to force him to let him use the clubs.  Your definition of a "bully" is really messed up.

Another thought.  “ worked “.  Here’s the disconnect.   Worked.  What or how do you define “ worked “. What was the solution here you find to be acceptable?

when I spot an idiot , the absolute only “ worked “ or solution id accept is that he does his thing and I do mine. Minus any fake conversation in between.

you’re looking at this as wanting to make peace. Most just want to make space in between.  Good fences make good neighbors.

“Other than your mind, lose something in there?” tends to have great results eliminating that kind of issue if ‘The Look’ doesn’t quickly discourage that type of behavior.

I was surprised by this comment then I saw you live in Los Angeles. If you ever get to a more rural area you’ll find that people are actually friendly towards each other, even to people they don’t know. Drivers let other drivers merge into traffic with a wave that is returned with a Thank You and a smile. I moved out of SoCal as soon as I could a moved to a much slower paced lifestyle and I could never go back.

That doesn’t mean I condone some idiot who has no concept of personal space like the OP experienced, but if someone starts a conversation at the range I’ll chat with them for a little.

I guess it really depends how someone approaches you and starts a conversation at the range.

I’m sorry to hear you moved away from SoCal so that you could let nice people merge into traffic and have them smile and say thank you. But to each his own. (See what I did there to a stranger striking a conversation up with me-much like at the range).

Haha I can't even say i'm surprised.  I worked my butt off my entire life since I was 15.  In college I bought myself a brand new car for about 30k, car must have had about 30 miles on it.

This kid I met maybe 3 times in my life, asked me repeatedly in a night if he could drive my car.  Finally I said no and stop asking me or i'm going to get real pissed off.  He had the nerve to call me stingy and selfish.  Let's just say my response was a lot harsher than the OP's.

Don't think he said anything about wanting to be left alone......he just said the guy was babbling on about equipment not helping and noticed that they were the rare bird sighting of PXG ......adding that the guy was a chop , why would he or anyone let him swing his BRAND new sticks .....so he could bend a shaft while sticking in the ground or anything else? C'mon

This is NOT about the OP not letting the guy hit his new clubs nor wanting to be left alone.

Of course the OP wasn't wrong in not letting the guy hit his clubs.

This is about the OP's over the top reaction to the guy.

Don't see an over the top reaction but ......

got a little annoyed he went into my bag, and told him, “No, I’d rather you didn’t, put the club back and please keep away from my bag”. He gave me a look, but before he could say anything I told him, “you just went on for 5 minutes about how new clubs can’t help anyone, and now you’re looking to hit mine?”

He was pretending to be the guy the OP was talking about I think. 😛

As for the OP, i'll definitely jump in on the support train and say you did nothing wrong. Given the dudes unsolicited rant, the ONLY way he could have approached you appropriately was apologizing for the rant (or at least acknowledging its rudeness) then kindly asking if he could try a club before even coming close to touching it. Anything short of that given the context was cruisin' for a bruisin'. 😅

Geez, some of you are pretty uptight on the range.

JP finds golfers are pretty sociable sorts, generally, but the pr*ckliness herein is astounding. "Dont make eye contact"? Really?

Golf is a game, not an incursion.

90% of players are pretty reasonable, the other 10% are from Los Angeles.

Wow, just read this thread. Got shivers from thinking about a hack touching my clubs.

My daughter had a similar incident like this but with her friend. Both scratch golfers. Friend asks to hit her driver, daughter says ok, daughter comes home with a sky mark on her 2 week old driver.

That hurted my heart and wasn't even my driver - my money but but not my club.

If a scratch golfer can make sky mark a hack might break something. (((Shivers)))

There was another LH next to me and he noticed they were PXG.

How do you know he noticed the brand? Might have just thought they were some DIY or a DTC no-name brand, or just some a club different than he had.

I was good with everything until you said "...keep away from my bag."  That's where you went off the nice train into DB-ville.

If you go back and read my op again, you’ll see I said the person next to me noticed I had PXG 0211’s in my bag and he asked me about their DTC policy with them, and how it worked out for me.

The other person overheard us, and that is when he  started with  his “you can’t buy a game” comments.

Ummm, re-read your original post. Unless you edited that out, I see nothing about DTC policy conversation.
