How do we feel about the $65 green fee?  High or ok?

I played the old Peter Hay maybe five years ago. It was $30 for all day and resort guests were free. We went around twice for $30. You could tell though, the place needed a re-do or at least a spit-polish.

As far as a "fancy" pitch and putts compares, The Cradle at Pinehurst is $50. No break for resort guests. Re-plays are free.

Thats a good point with the Cradle.  Terranea which is an amazing ocean view par three course is in this ballpark price wise too, although I don't think there is any break for replays.

When a burger is pushing $30, $65 isn't so bad and actually seems pretty fair.  Glad they are letting kids play free.

Played the old Peter Hay a few years back as an 8some on a bachelor party trip and while at the time the course was underwhelming, it was an absolute blast. We all picked 1 club and a putter and ended up going around twice. We were the only group out there for the majority of the time too.

I am excited about them giving it a major update. $65 seems a little pricey for a 9 hole short course, but then again it is Pebble Beach so why would it be cheap?? Kids play for free which is cool. The new logo they rolled out for it is cool as well. I am sure they will capitalize on that with some cool merch.

Our group is headed to Pebble at the end of July. We wanted to include Peter Hay but it's booked solid then and months afterwards. Good for Pebble. Not so good for us.

Well nuts - was just reading about it last night and now going to be there mid-July.  I was afraid it would be booked solid. Oh well, maybe someone will cancel.

FWIW, I called today and for the time we'll be there - around mid-July, there were a few times on each of several days.  Booked!

We're a large group - maybe 28. They most likely didn't have room for that many at the time we can play there. Perhaps a few of us can get out. We'll see.

Actual footage of the course looks better than I imagined - seems just like the drawings/renderings.  So cool.  Look forward to playing it on my next PB trip.

I just played it this weekend - IMO, not worth the $65.  I think because everything is so expensive at Pebble that it seems "cheap" but it's a 45-50 minute pitch and putt.

The greens are pretty fun with lots of dips and valleys (Hole 9 is basically a funnel), but I honestly think this should be a freebie for resort guests.

I played it 3 months ago with my brothers and BIL and we had a BLAST.  It was fun.  Personally I enjoyed it very much. Vibe is super laid back.  Excellent way to break in some wedges and hit all kinds of different shots. It was super crowded but moved along well.  It was free for us because my brother is a Duke’s Club member and he had 4 free passes.  $65 is a bit much but I’d pay it to play it again because it’s only gonna get more expensive next year or the year after.

I loved it and thought it was easily worth the money. The majority of the holes are a flip wedge but the greens and elevation changes are enough to keep you interested and make the shots a challenge.  It's a great way to kill an hour or two. We played the putting course, too, which was a lot of fun. There's a drink cart parked right next to it so you can have a cocktail and putt around.

I agree with everything you said and would play it again no doubt.

I was there during the Labor Day long weekend. Most of groups are families.

I think you need to look at it from a family golfing angle. Kids play for free. So 2 parents + 2 kids. You are looking at $130 for couple of hours of fun for the whole family. The practice green is lots of fun. It is more like a mini golf than a real putting green.

If you have 4 dudes who look for serious golf, not recommend the Hay.

Went to the Hay over the Labor Day long weekend. A few notes that hopefully folks will find useful.

Before visit

  • Tee time is super limited. Book as advanced as you can.

Check-in

  • Check-in is at Pebble Beach Golf Academy, not at the Hay. So point your GPS to that place. The staff at the academy will remind you to park at an unpaved parking lot across Stevenson Dr. The academy’s parking lot is reserved for academy members.
  • There are The Hay merchandise being sold at the academy.
  • The driving range next to the academy is reserved for academy members and resort guests. It is not open to the public.
  • The restrooms are inside the academy. There is no on-site restroom at the Hay at the moment.
  • An on-site restaurant is scheduled to open in a few months. Right now, you can only get food and drinks from a cart. If you wanna get proper food, you need to go to the Pebble Beach Golf Links, which is about 10-minute walk.

The Hay

  • There is a giant practice putting area at The Hay. It is open to the public and free. There are 18 holes on the practice area. The setup more resembles mini golf than a proper putting green. It was a lot of fun. I’d suggest to budget an hour if you decide to play all 18 holes.
  • Check in with starter 5 minutes before tee time. You can get a plastic divot tool for free. It has The Hay logo on it.
  • Starter will remind you to watch out for the flying golf balls and yell fore as needed. This is the biggest complain I have about The Hay. It is a very small piece of property even by executive 9 hole standard. A lady was hit by a golf ball when I was there. She was okay, but it was pretty unsettling.
  • The course is very short. Yardage is from 60 yards to 100 yards. Elevation and contours on the green make it interesting.
  • You got nice views of the Pacific at many holes, but the course is not next to the water.
  • It was crowded during the labor weekend. Foursome at every tee time. Pace of play is good. We finished in just over an hour.

Summary

  • The Hay feels like a great escape for family vacationers and hotel guests who are basically there. Kids play for free or heavily discounted. So every group was some kinda family (parents + kids) when I was there. I wouldn’t drive for couple of hours and pay $65 to play The Hay though.
  • The biggest complain I have is you gotta watch for the stranded shots.

Although I played for free this morning I had fun. The new restaurant called Hay's Place is now open and is serving Mexican food and cocktails.

Didn't try the restaurant as my wife wanted to eat a late breakfast at Stillwater's. You couldn't ask for better weather for mid October as it ended up being in the mid 70's and sunny

Is that restaurant in the new building they were making right by the course? Mexican food and cocktails sounds perfect.

I didn't pay attention before but it's on Peter Hay Hill right at the course with a view of the 9th and Stillwater Cove. It's supposed to have the largest outside dining area out of all the restaurants at the resort with fire tables and pits. The restaurant opens at 11am so I'll have to try it next time.
