New Trend: music on the golf course

Recommended Posts

Any of you noticed this? At my club a bunch of golfers are playing loud music while they play. I yelled at a group to turn it down on a hold adjacent to where we were playing and got the Bronx salute.

What’s the point of playing loud music while playing a game that requires ultimate concentration?

New? Here in the Midwest, we've put up with it for the last few years. Some hate it, some love it. Most who love it think only they can hear it.

Basically against also. I have to admit that I have tried it a few times when I’ve played by myself but I kept it low enough so only I could hear it.

At some munis it can get comical at the turn or on crossover holes. A blend of rap, EDM, and oldies all coming from awful Bluetooth speakers. It's really tacky when guys have it so loud that 3+ groups are forced to hear it.

I'm so, so with you. Loud birds annoy me. crappy boomboxes with awful compressed Bluetooth sound make me CRAZY. Could be playing my favorite song and I'd still hate it. Fortunately such things are rare at the courses I play.

If you want to listen to music on the golf course, buy some Airpods and put them in your ears. Don't force the whole course to listen to your choice of music.

I'm all for it.  Brings a fun aspect to what has traditionally been a stuffy and boring atmosphere.  Yes, if it is too loud then it is a problem, but I have rarely experienced that, maybe not ever.  Even the municipal course here in Orlando has speakers built into the carts so you can connect via bluetooth.  Keep the game fun.

I’m not against music on the course per se. However, I think we need to get to some kind of control on volume so that it does not project more than a few feet from the player listening to it whether in a cart or walking.

This may mean that only speakers supplied by the course that have a pre-set volume limit are to be used otherwise they will need to leave.

Music is such a subjective pleasure, or displeasure, that it is impossible to please everyone with volume. For instance I may despise country or western style music and love opera, but that doesn’t mean I should subject half the course to Puccini when I’m playing and nor should Tex have his Nashville hit parade blaring. It is all about moderation. Unfortunately many do not grasp this concept and this is where the problem lies.

No matter what, the real solution is to have the player assistants do their job and control the offenders.

If they are in my group then I have the right to ask them to turn the music down. If they choose not to then they are holding up the play not me.

But...if they’re playing and you’re just standing there...

I guess it is their fault.  They should just leave you standing on the tee box while you pout.

Late in the season (October onward when the course is mostly empty) my group brings speakers to the course and listens to old rock music.

We've only had a couple of people even say they can hear it while on the course, no one has ever complained. Remember this is the last 3-4 weeks of the season though... We've had people join our group and ask us not to turn it off LOL. We've even taken requests at the turn after our rounds are done. We've played "theme" music for golfers as they prepare to tee off WWE style

I'd never do this in the normal season. But in silly season it's fun and a lot of folks seem to enjoy it

Music on the course is weak. Most of the people who insist on listening to music on the course have awful taste in music. I wish people would stop playing music on the course.

But...I know they will not and I will be forced to listen to it from time to time. When that happens, I will grumble about how people who listen to music on the course suck and then hit my ball again.

It’s not something that I would be keen on. If I am playing with friends then I am not sure that we would need music to pass any time between shots what with speaking to one another. If I am myself then I will listen to music or a podcast but that is with AirPods so that it is not putting anyone else off. Seems to me that it is a fair compromise.

It's not even a golf thing, assuming that other people want to hear your music is a problem that has existed since the dawn of time...or at least the phonograph.

Playing music and playing music so loudly that other groups on other holes can hear it are very different things. My group generally plays music but we do so in a way that it isn't loud enough for anyone not standing near our cart to hear it.

When playing with someone we don't know we also ask them if it's okay to play it and when they are teeing off in an area where they can hear it we will turn it down even if they say it isn't necessary.

Welcome to another episode of most divisible questions ever, where everyone thinks only their answer is right and everyone else is wrong.

I probably made these statements in a combination of every time this topic is started, but I'm bored at work so here we go.

My regular group 4-8 people listens to music. Is it too loud? I don't think so, no one has said anything from an adjacent hole or anything. On the note of playing music if we somehow just have a twosome and we get paired with another twosome we don't even ask we just don't play it, seems like common sense.

On the flip side if you're a single paired with us, majority rules.

Any type of official tournament or something no music at all.

I’ve noticed it on golf course and also hiking trails in the Rockies. It’s annoying on the trails, but at least there it keeps the bears away...

There are signs on some of our local trails telling people no amplified music. Still, there's amplified music. Why???? "People are no darned good," quotes my late father-in-law.
