Need a Drill or Advice for Addressing Lower-Body Swaying During Swing

Recommended Posts

Through pure happenstance I may have figured out a big flaw in my swing.   I know generally that, at set-up, my weight should be 50/50 between my front and back feet.   And then, during my backswing, I'm supposed to smoothly shift my weight toward the front, so that, by the time I start my downswing, it's more like 80% on my front foot.

The other day at the range the sun was positioned so that I had a good view of my shadow as I stood over the ball and swung.  I noticed that, as I start to bring the club back, my weight starts to shift to my front leg/foot.  But as I get near the top of my backswing, my lower body and my weight sway back toward my back foot.   I've never had a very good weight transition and now (I think) I know why.

Can anyone recommend a drill, video, tutorial, etc. that can help me improve this weight transition problem?   I'd google it, but I have no idea what words/terms to search for.    Thanks.

We need video to see exactly what you're doing. Random drills are likely to just make things worse.

So, I am far from an expert, and have a struggling swing.  Listen  intently  to Podcast, heard some older podcast with Tony Manzoni, who was a PGA golf instructor  and college coach in CA with 5 state titles.

His claim was he found a letter from hogan to a friend of a friend. Which detailed playing off his left side after the accident.  He also claims Trevino claimed the same.

After hearing  these podcast multiple  times, in a nut shell he claims a wieight shift is not advisable  for most. The claim is their is too much going on and it is too challenging  to get the club back square  and shift the weight.  He also claims with no shift, the axis isn't  moving  so getting square at contact is much more likely.

You've  heard others talk about keeping your front hip against  the wall, this  may be similar.

I'm  associated  with either. But i can tell you my sc300 is recording about 15+ yards on my longer clubs. (Again i was horrible)  today at the range more of my drives went shockingly  more straight  than i have ever seen. In the past about 90% of my drives were slices or push slices.  And today about 80% were a mixture  of fades, straights, and even a couple draws.

Now i did adjust my grip dramatically per Hogans fundamentals, and hitting off the left side seems a bit wierd but i seem to like the results so far

Exactly the problem I had. Think “swing in barrel” it’s a Tom Watson tip. Another from George Knudsen, called the “hello there drill”.
without a club stand straight. Turn your hips left. Let your right heel raise, and make sure all your weight ends up on your left foot. Good luck with the journey.
