Deep faced 5 and 7 woods

provx

Recommended Posts

Looking for 5 and 7 woods with a deep face. I tend to deloft quite a lot and for this reason i use a 5 and 7 wood instead of 3 and 5. This also causes me to live in fear of popping up shallow faced woods because i hit them high on the face due to the way i present the club. I am a higher swing speed low cap golfer so also not looking for draw biased clubs and what not.

anything out there in this market? Trend seems to be toward making fairways more shallow, might have to go the hybrid route? Even considered adding a 9 wood as my ts2 7 wood is my 240 club with a great flight, just too dang shallow faced.

If you're not dead set on newer models the callaway X2 hot 5 deep would certainly fit the bill for a 5 wood.  Maybe look at one of the older TM 5HL woods to cover the 7 they tend to have some deeper faces.

Callaway 5 deep.

For the 7 wood, I'd probably be looking at more of a players hybrid. Those are going to have taller faces than any wood.

TEE Beta woods for past models are deeper faced, not sure about newer iterations.  CBX 119 is relatively deep faced.

Agree that for 7 wood you might be better off going hybrid though of course that differs in flight/turf/rough interactions

F6 baffler for the 5 wood. Ill do a comparison to the 0341x gen2 7 wood i got yesterday when I get home. I'm sure its shallower then the faffler.

But loving how flat it looks in the pxg setting.

The new mizuno fairway woods are pretty deep. They do not have a 7 wood though. For that go Titleist.

The Mizunos have a relatively deep face, but they stop at at 5w.

That said, delofting won't increase the likelihood of a pop up.   In fact, all things equal, it'll reduce it because you've lessened the angle which raises the top line relatively higher.

Now if you tend to hit down on your FWs in general (or do so as part of delofting) a shallow faced club stands a big greater chance to pop up.

Srixon bills their fairway woods as shallow faced but the F85 was definitely on the deeper face side. I heard the current model, the ZX, is similar to the F85.

Maybe check out Srixon?

Check out the Sub 70 Pro Fairways, they are about as deep as any new club these days.  Very forgiving and good off the deck as well.

Gotta figure out if you are a sweeper or a digger of the club. Sweepers work well with your 5 and 7 woods while a digger will prefer a hybrid. Like you said, the way you present the club at the ball will dictate your comfort level in executing the shot. Not sure how far back you want to go but there are a lot of deep faced woods put out by all brands.

good tips so far, probably more accurate to say i am a digger and therefore like deep faces, usually like to stick to newer models just for the sake of being readily able to find some modern TX flex shafts with adapters to put into the head. Im not much of a club builder in terms of gluing in shafts to older heads.

like the suggestions so far of flat lie angle, deeper faced options .

Ahhh, what I thought but wasn’t certain. I like my woods similar to my personality: shallow.

Just a thought. For older and cheaper options the Nike T60 fairway woods had a deep face. Another older option was the Cobra S9-1 Pro fairway woods. Both the Cobra and Nike fairway woods were very very good. Smaller head sizes as well. Stock Matrix shaft on the Cobra was pretty good. Stock shaft on the Nike was awful.

I put an X100 shaft in a tour issue Taylor Made M4 5HL from Ebay which came in at 21.5 degrees. There's no hosel adjustment on those M4's. The club has a deep face and I can deloft out of the rough and drive it forward better than a hybrid. Also goes higher than my Ping 425 22 degree. The Ping is a bit more workable but the "6" wood Taylor Made is actually a better feeling club. Shaft/tour head combo is amazing and head to head it's probably 5-10 yards longer but harder to keep flighted down on a full swing into the wind. They're both great clubs.

TEE Beta models were deep-faced.

And as noted earlier, Callaway X2Hot had Deep head options. Saw this model in action last summer at a regional golf tourney. A local pro had a 280-yard shot out of light rough to an elevated Par 5 green. He pulled out his Calla X2Hot 3Deep and hit a mid-level screamer to 20 feet right of cup. I had been meaning to ask him why he had a decade-old FW, until he hit that shot.

Came back to add some pics of the F9.  Can’t really get much deeper. It’s taller than the ball.  Lol. Pics are of it soled completely. Can’t say enough good things about this club.
