What is the biggest surprise you added to your bag in 2021?

pollock21

Recommended Posts

Could be a wedge, driver, new golf tee, divot tool, bag itself, etc.

I'll start it off, tried a 4 pack of the Kirkland golf gloves and they are really good for the $$. Not the thinnest, but a very nice cabretta that feels good. I also grabbed one of the golf towels with the built in magnet, highly recommend as well.

Hopefully soon I'll be updating with how fantastic my upcoming ZX5/7 combo set it, but this should do for now.

My pair of Lazrus wedges are a nice surprise. Not sure if it's because my old wedges were old or if the new ones are just that good. But I am very happy and it was $110 for both the 52/8 and 56/12.

I could say the KZG combo I made up, too. But everyone who has hit either of them said they were amazing, so kinda not except for the price I paid.

Overall very happy with my bag right now (except I would like a new bag 🤣)

1. The Srixon ZX4 4iron I added as a driving iron/long iron replacement.

I ordered on a whim based on how good the ZX7's I had were treating me.  My current course I hit it 7 times off of the tee at my current club because of the doglegs.  I have played missed one fairway in the last three rounds that it has been in the bag and that was from an absolutely horrible swing.  Poor swings are still hitting the fairway.

2. Callaway Epic Max LS.  Ordered with the U-try from globalgolf on a whim. (25 bucks to try a club with free shipping is pretty nice if you ask me)

I have been trying to replace my Ping G400 Max for years.  The G40 LST got in my bag for a little while, but was a little to unruly sometimes.  I tried EVERY driver up until this years releases and nothing could get in there.  I even tried the 425's from this year.  The MAX LS, is almost as forgiving as the G400 MAX and is much lower spinning.  These are all my results, and YMMV.

Mizuno RB Tour X golf ball. Love a premium ball, hate paying $45+ for a dozen. Bought these on recommendation and they've been very good. Amazon has them at a discount if you buy 5 dozen which I have now done to stock up for the season.

I tried both the Tour and Tour X. Tour X feels much better throughout the bag for me. Felt like I got great driver performance with the Tour but it fell off with everything else. Tour X is all around the best for me.

If you're playing Vice, Snell, etc in that price range, seriously give these a try.

I'm hoping that the TSi3 that I picked up over the winter will be the biggest surprise.  I've only taken it to the range once so far (heading out today for 2nd spin) and it performed great in a crazy cross wind and felt so much better than the G410+ that was my workhorse for last season.

Another will be if I keep a Titleist ball in the bag for any extended period of time after being a longtime TM ball player.  TM balls have been my main ball since the Penta days with the occasional Srixon XV's when you can get them for 50% off on GT and Sportchek sales in the spring.  Was gifted a couple dzn 1X's so will be given a chance.

Groove it club brush... I had been terrible

about cleaning my clubs and this is an awesome tool that helps me keep things fresh.

built in water sprayer, huge head, strong bristles that don’t damage the club and an awesome magnet that quickly detaches and reattaches to the bag.

My Srixon ZX7 driver and ZX fairway. I was happy with my Sim and old reliable biocell 3 wood. But on a total whim I ordered both and they are great clubs. Couldn’t be happier. The fairway is a rocket and my dispersion with the driver is better than the Sim.

The custom long or standard length? I was looking at those... but that price.

Edel Putter - Did a fitting and bought a putter.  Was missing many short putts (due to aiming mostly).  this new putter really tightened things up and helped my putting confidence.  I am saving just over 2 strokes per round based on my putt count averages.

Ping G425Max fairway woods - big surprise for me, never hit a Ping club before.  Very forgiving, great ballspeeds.

Titleist Prov1x - always tried to find something 'as good as' - finally took the plunge and started playing the exclusively.  They do everything very well.

Definitely my 7 wood. I've always been a 2 iron/utility iron guy because it's great off the tee. But being in Southern California, I dont need to be hitting stingers all the time. The 7 wood is just soooo easy to hit and really versatile. New favorite club for sure!

@pollock21Those Kirkland gloves are great!  I have a few dozen of them because of how cheap they are and how good they are for the price.  I will still buy a 4 pack every so often when I'm at Costco just to make sure I don't run out.

My surprises for this year are the following:

-M3 3HL with an Aldila Tour Green 75 stiff flex.  I've had a hard time over the years finding a good fairway off the tee, and something that I can hit off the deck.  So far, this has been very good for me.

-  Callaway X Forged Utility 21* with a VTS 104g hybrid shaft.  I tossed the shaft in there for fun, and I'm surprised with how easy it is to hit off the deck.  For some reason, that combo is easier to hit than the 24* I have with a Modus 125s shaft in it.  I'm getting to the point to where I'm going to bend that 21* to 23* and use it instead of the 24* I've been using.

-A random clicgear accessory is on this list as well.  I got the stand bag accessory recently, and my stand bag doesn't move on the cart anymore.  It's very convenient.

Going back to super low bounce on my lob wedge. My short game was garbage and I tried every single bounce and grind out there and was always same crap. I always thought I had the yips for the past 5yrs but it definitely helped. Ironically my first wedge was a Wilson Harmonized Low Bounce also that I got from a sales bin at a sports store 30yrs ago and was forced to learn my short game from it. I had to do everything with only wedge, kinda crazy nowadays.

Hogan Apex blades ('99).

Only thing in my bag that was hands-off this year was my set of irons, AP2s that I was going to have re-shafted with C-Tapers. Before pulling the trigger on the order, I logged onto E-Bay to see if I could find a deal on the shafts, but first searched Hogan Irons for a dose of vintage iron porn (I have a set of Apex Grinds I break out occasionally and love the look).  Sure enough, top of page was a buy-it-now Apex MB with C-Taper 120's for cheap.   I was logged into E-Bay for less than 2 minutes before making a bag-changing purchase without a second's thought.

20+ years ago I almost bit on the 99 Apex as my first iron purchase, but coming out of hand-me-down Titleist Tour Model blades with too-stout x100s I decided to should try something more forgiving. Bought the AP2's a couple of years ago intending to swap shafts immediately, but kept putting off the inconvenience + cost. Somehow I stumbled on "the one that got away" + the upgrade I was too soft to go through with within a couple of keyboard clicks, all for under $200.

Delivered Tuesday.  An after-work 9 was delightful and followed by a playing-hooky 18 Wednesday that met increasingly heightened expectations.  They're in the bag for the season opener with my reg. foursome, for sure.

I had a Mizuno Bettinard BC4 that I had taken apart for a trip to BOS to get refinished.

I put it back together on a whim a few weeks ago and instantly reminded how much I loved it.

It may still go to BOS, but for now it has beat out all my other putters.

I also forgot to mention earlier, but the Seemore Copper FGP mallet is showing a lot of promise. I've always been fitted into center shaft putters but never found one I really liked. Bought mine off the BST here for a solid deal and man I'm rolling it well. No skips and hops off the face, great feel, and i'm hitting my lines. So far haven't holed more putts with it, but that's due to read and not the stroke. All you can ask for is hitting your intended line with good speed and this putter has been spot on for me.

Never saw myself with a seemore, figured when I finally bit on a CS it would be a scotty phantom.
