1990ish as a kid I bought a used half set of 3i, 5i, 7i, 9i, SW, 3w, driver, and putter in an old leather bag. Grips were like hard plastic. Persimmon driver had duct tape securing the ferrule.

I got pretty good and decided to try out for the freshmen golf team still using this set. I can still remember vividly being at the first tee and seeing the bags of the other kids with brand new Pings and the like. Later that year I bought a brand new full set of Dunlops with metal woods. They weren’t great, but were a massive upgrade lol

Srixon ZX5 9* driver: Tensei CK Pro Blue
Ping G410 2h, 3h, 4h: Tensei CK Pro Blue
Srixon ZX7 5-PW: Recoil 95 (HS + lead tape)
Titleist Vokey SM7 50, 54, 58: Recoil 110
Rife Cayman (+tungsten powder)
Srixon Z-Star Diamond

My first set was Spaulding Tour TX from 1996, I was 15. Had driver, 3 and 5 woods and 3 thru PW. Also came with a bag too. Bought a Palm Springs sand wedge and no idea what putter. I remember it had a graphite shaft in it. Maybe cost 500 in total.

Then my dad inherited Callaway Big Bertha woods from a coworker and I got to use those as he didn't like them. Shortly after got a new bag that could stand and bought myself Top Flite pro grind irons and Cleveland 588 wedges. My uncle won a contest and gave me the Bobby Jones putter that I used for awhile. But that first set is still priceless to me.

Dr. Sim2 8° w/ RDX blue 60 6.5

3 Wood. Sim2 15° and 19° w/ Diamana 70x

Ui. Callaway x forged ut 21° w/ dg120 x100

Started to get info golf in 2008.  First golf club ever was a blade putter I got for Christmas.  Back then, Sams club had Odyssey putters on sale, but it was too expensive for me.

The following summer, I spent $60 at a garage sale for a barely used MacGregor set that included woods and irons.

Massively upgraded since then.  Now, I browse on BST everyday and buy stuff I don't need lol.

My first set was a used set of Lynx Predators in 1984. I got:

3-PW Driver, 3-4-5 woods and a bag with headcovers for all the woods too. I think it was ~ $100. I filled it out with a new Powerbilt Renewal SW and a new Bullseye flange putter.

I remember having a hard time deciding between the Bullseye and a Ping Anser. The Anser cost $30 and the Bullesye $18 so I went for the cheaper choice!

40ish.  Visiting relatives in Minnesota.  Wife's uncles asked if I wanted to tag along with them to play golf.  Nothing else to do so...

Cowboy boots.  Sleeveless western shirt with snap buttons and snap closures on the pockets.  Hat touting the manufacturer of construction equipment.  Off we went.  Waded through goose poop.  Swung a couple clubs at a ball with zero effect.

Within a couple weeks of coming back home, a new employee moved into the office down the hall.  He was about my age and an avid golfer.  Wanted me to get a set of clubs so we could go play.  Had a Smith & Wesson K15 Combat Masterpiece .38 special.  Took it to a pawn shop across town and traded straight across for a complete set of McGregor clubs... bag and all!  Yes, they were a set with aluminum shafts.  Not steel.  Not titanium.  Aluminum!!!  They were enough for me to catch the golf bug and have spent entirely too much, over the past years, on golf clubs.  Had very little in the old S&W, but still got taken on the swap!!!!  :>)

Hoo boy, let's see here, my first couple clubs were a Lynx 4 wood and an 8 iron. Lost the 8 iron. First full set were a set of hand me downs Wilson k-28 irons, I think 3-pw. My dad also gave me a Cleveland quadpro 4 driver, it has a warning label to be careful not to hit the group in front of you because it's so long. Dad also gave me an acculine putter. I bought some clubs from goodwill to finish out the set. Dad also gave me a set of hybrid irons from warrior custom golf.

First driver I purchased was a Taylormade r7 superquad, I was still new to buying golf clubs so I was upgrading my bag 1 iron at a time from 2nd swing clearance bin, when I found a set of Cleveland VAS 792s.

So between my dad and my club hoeing I have 4 sets of irons, 3 drivers, only a few fairway woods. I'm really struggling the urge to buy a new driver lol.

D-Taylormade SIM MAX D Diamana PD 50r

3w- Honma TW-XP1

17° Adams XTD Ti super hybrid

4h-5h- Tour Edge Exotics ex9

6-AW- Cleveland Launcher XL Nippon Zelos 7

56°- Cleveland CBX Zipcore

60°- Lazrus

P- Odyssey eleven tour lined stroke lab shaft

When I was a freshman in high school 1985 I joined the golf team. I had played a bit of golf but had only used chi chi Rodriguez junior clubs. My friends father  had a golf club shop at his house where he built clubs and took in trades. For $50 I bought a set of Royal golf clubs. It was the first time I ever had hit a 4,6,8,PW in my life. They came with a big heavy leather bag. I bought them with my own money. When I was in the Marines my parents bought me a set of Titleist DTR’s that I played for a long time. My uncle worked at the Acushunet company so we could get those at cost.

Late 80's, I bought a used set of Yamaha Secret III's, for $400. Awesome clubs, and beginning of JDM lust.

Back in 2004 I wanted to get into golf.  I knew little about equipment so I got on eBay and bought a new full bag of Wilson irons, woods, and putter. Irons had light weight graphite shafts lol. I paid about $125 for them. I probably only played 4 rounds with them after buying and then I didn’t play golf again until 2016. I still have them in my basement, don’t think I could give them away.

My first “set” was a bunch of various irons - some with steel shafts, one aluminum shaft, one fiberglass, and a hickory. In 1970 I used some of my first jobs earnings ($1.68 p/h) to get some brand new MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Golden Bears. Not sure of the price but probably around $100.

I've been tempted to buy the same set on eBay but they are $300 now. I traded them for a partial set of Ping Eye2’s in the early 80’s that I filled out. I still have that set and used the clubs for almost 30 years.

After starting my golf life with hand me down pings (first set were old school Karstens, then Eye2s), my first brand new set were the Mizuno T-zoid Pros. Played those irons in my only USGA tourney (to date). I recently picked up a 7 iron from that set and marone they're some good sticks.

McGregor Jack Nicklaus complete set plus bag. Bought them from a place called Best or Bests. Anyway, you would order then wait for your order to come down the conveir belt. It's was like Christmas.... Don't remember the price but remember there was not a lot of tech in them. This was probably 1978 ish.

The first that I played with in the late 80s was actually my grandfathers set. It was a full on Hickory set from maybe the 40s or 50s. Had the old bag to match. I just saw them in my dad‘s garage the other day and was laughing about it. Then when I was maybe 12 I finally stole my dad‘s set of ram tour clubs. Driver through pitching wedge. Played those persimmon woods through my first couple years of high school. I think my junior year my parents bought me a set of lynx black cats. I remember those were the absolute coolest clubs. Also got an invex driver. That thing was hilarious, and I hit it pretty damn well. I bet that last set was maybe $600, but I’m not sure. Fun to think about.

I was 12 - 5'5" maybe 100 pounds.  Standard men's clubs too long for me so I "fit" myself, lol, and ordered a set of Ram Kathy Cornelius clubs (D, 3w, 5w, 3, 5, 7, 9) out of an Austad's catalog and sent in an order form/check by mail.  No idea what they cost, but I had a set!

Xmas three years later my dad got me my first "full" set of men's clubs (I think he figured the powder blue woods needed to go and I was heading towards 6' tall and beyond and going through pants and shoes like crazy for another 2  years after that, haha) - and of course to make them perfect they all had Jack Nicklaus' name on them!

^^^ This is actually a little eerie...  I could have typed this almost verbatim only changing the following:

1.  I was 10 vice 12 - purchased myself with paper route money in 1977;

2.  It was 5 years vice 3 years to "upgrade" and it was my birthday vice Christmas.  However, like @Hawkeye77 the powder blue woods and bag plus a growth were driving factors;

3.  Upgrade to full set was a used set of 'Jack Nicklaus' signature clubs - with a bag that weighed roughly a metric ton empty.

The first "real" set I purchased with my own money was in 1988.  A set of Hogan Apex Redline irons and Tony Penna persimmon 1-3-5 woods.

1993 ish. Ping Zing knockoffs called Tour Model Z, probably made from recycled bicycle parts, $199 I think. I made so many trips to the golf shop’s used club bin, buying & trying other’s junk. Founders Club metalwoods, Cubic Balance grooveless driver, Tiger Shark Great White oversized putter. First real set of irons were Yonex Super ADX with carbon weave in the cavity, they looked really cool. First real driver wasn’t a driver at all (Callaway The Deuce 2W with steel shaft).
