Return to golf after FAI hip arthroscopy.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Been having a terrible time out on the golf course over the last 18 months.

Turns out all the basketball (and golf) I've played over the years has resulted in me needing an Arthroscope on at least my right hip to correct some FAI I've got going on.

The pain has been lingering for a few years and I was just using ibuprofen and celebrex to play but it is starting to affect my normal day to day life so I really need to get it done.
And if you've had it, you'll know how much it affects your golf swing and rotation.

I'm only 39 and am just wondering if anyone has had it done and what the return to golf result has been for you?
Thanks in advance.

Had this done 3 years ago myself. Same age at the time (39). As you mentioned it is very tough playing a rotational sport like golf with FAI. Not going to lie, it will be a long recovery. I'm sure they told you but don't expect to do much for the first 6 months. But after that I got back to some easy putting and chipping.  Slow progress from there but after around 12 months post OP the hip felt great and I trusted it enough to go all out. I've been golfing non stop since and the hip has felt like it did when I was in my 20s! it took patience and a lot of rehab to get to that point but 100% worth doing. You will be back to your old golfing and other sports with a new hip.

Dang, not sure what operation that is, but I had total hip replacements, one at a time.  I couldn't even walk up a set of stairs or up a slope to a green. Was back putting in 2 weeks, chipping in 3 weeks and full golf at 8 weeks. 18 months after the second hip was done and the hips are better then when I was a teenager and I'm 66 years old!!😂

Happy to hear about your quick recovery and experience. It was definitely a game changer.

So funny how different it is depending on your provider. Like I said my doc wouldn't even let me chip until I was 6 months post OP. I felt pretty good before that time but was not going to push it!

Hopefully the OP has a similar experience and can get back on the course before the season is over

Thanks for the replies all.

Great to hear everyone was pleased with the outcome. I’m pretty down about it, but it is good to know the end result is positive.

Tried to play on Sat in a comp. Went round in a cart with a mate, hit the first 5 GIR and then just fell apart. Hips just tire off so quickly, rotation gets restricted and they cease up.
At that point I’m just over trying with them.

Still hoping I only have to get the right one done, but the left isn’t great either. The right causes me a lot more grief though.

@GolfingUteMy understanding Arthroscopic intervention is longer recovery than full hip replacements, however hip replacements need to be redone after a certain length of time.

I was told by one of the best Hip specialist in NC I needed surgery to repair my hip labrum b/c of FAI. But instead I listened to my PT and kept doing PT instead of the surgery and the hip feels fine now. I do spend time stretching and strengthening my hips on a daily basis and especially before golfing but I can deal with that. If you haven't done PT I recommend trying that for a few months.

I don't disagree with trying everything you can, including PT, before surgery.

For me I went through about 3 years of PT, trying as hard as I could to avoid surgery. The PT really offered little to no relief for me unfortunately. I don't regret going down that path necessarily but I do feel I lost a few good years of my 30s trying to figure this out.

Bigsetzee, I was told the same thing. The FAI scope should last a long time, hopefully preventing needing hip replacement all together or for a while. However hip replacements don't last as long, and at a young age you would most certainly have to get it redone at some point.

In the exact same bag, feel like I've wasted a few years trying to manage it through PT and its got to the point it is just not responding. I would also like to go back to playing some Vet league ball.

it must be that the average age of poster's here has increased over the last couple years - all the cool kids are on social - that said there are several post here on FAI over the last couple years

i was diagnosed with FAI about 5 years ago - tight hips likely runs in my family,  my father had 3 hip replacements  - I live close to NYC and went to see a few doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery - they told me they don't do FAI surgery for people over 25 - it's a difficult recovery - certainly harder than hip replacement

That said I've been on somewhat of a quest to fix my hips - a lot of PT, deep massage, yoga, targeted strengthening etc etc - all the normal stuff certainly helped - i found a Dr here that does PRP and trigger point injections - I had torn labrums like most people diagnosed with FAI do - that helped the labrums,  all that made things pretty good, certainly livable - the last modality that I have tried is this MAT - 'Muscle Activation Technique' it's not totally dissimilar to PT  (a slightly different paradigm) for me it's worked spectacularly well - I'm 100% pain free, it was the last mile

my golf game sucks but that's a whole other story
