Scotty squareback, 2018 or 2020?

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about moving away from my odyssey #7, not for any specific reason, just wanting to try something different.  I like the look of the scotty select squareback, much more than the Newport.  Does anyone have experience with both the 2018 model and the 2020?  Which do you prefer?  Are they worth the money?  Should I stick with my odyssey?

Thanks

Why choose?  Just buy both.  Pictured below, 2008, 2014, 2016 & 2018 Squarebacks.  I'm thinking 2014 was the best year (red pop-through sight, compact head w/deep milling - only missing a later mo

That’s not exactly right.  The 2008-2011 Studio Select Squareback 1 and 2 both have rounded bumpers.  The 2014-2015 Select Squareback has square bumpers.  The 2018-2019 Select Squareback 1 and 1.5 bot

2020 for me.  I like everything about more than any previous iteration, it's the first scotty that's made it into my bag

I had the M2 but bought and prefer the plumber neck on 2020 model.

Mainly played scotty mallets for the past 10 years and am not a fan of blades. Last year I tried, for the heck of it, a 2020 SC squareback 2 and I wish I would have tried a wide blade sooner! I have never been putting better. I did add heavier weights to the bottom and a stability shaft, but the squareback has been the best move I have made in my putting.

As a huge Scotty critic and someone who still finds it disappointing that his OTR offerings have become formulaic since about 2008-2009, I have to say that the Squareback 2 is his finest OTR offering in well over a decade. It feels good, is very forgiving, looks pleasing at setup despite the extra width and as a result, gives you confidence. Not that I don’t feel confident behind a traditional Anser head, but the Squareback 2 just feels even better. It is also unique to the retail putter market in its design and shape, not original per se but unique.

I would spend an extra couple bucks just to have this exact flat stick but in carbon steel form. As it stands, I am considering purchasing and gaming while I send my origin to get longneck’d (if I decide to go through with it lol).

The 2020 is my favorite of all Squarebacks as well. I didn’t care for the first iteration with the rounded bumpers, just looked odd to me on the head. I wasn’t a fan of the pop through alignment aids, or the aluminum face models. I personally think the 2020 Special Select line is his best OTR line in a long time.

In 2020 I got fitted for a SB2. Loved it from the first day in the bag. Best putter I've ever used, could not be happier. At first, I thought it was too high a price to pay for a putter, now I think it's a bargain.

Most birdies ever in a round for me was 3. I had a 5 birdie and 6 birdie round last year. The 6 birdie round I made 5 on the front nine and 1 on hole 10. I felt like Speithy in his prime! lol

Buy it, don't even hesitate.

Is there going to be a Double bend shaft for the 2020 Squareback?

All I can find is a plumbers neck

You could go with the Bettinardi BB8W. Slightly thinner than the square back but is carbon steel.

I’ve had the 2018 and still own the 2014.  I greatly prefer the more compact head shape of the 2014 (even tho it has that stupid pop up cross).  IMHO, the face of the 2018 and the 2020 is too long and the head feels huge compared to the 2014.

My perfect Squareback would be the 2014 head shape with a single line on the back flange.

Do mean flat bumpers vs the rounded ones? The 1 and 2 designation on the Squareback match the Newport styles. The 1 has rounded bumpers, and the 2 has flat/square bumpers.

That’s not exactly right.  The 2008-2011 Studio Select Squareback 1 and 2 both have rounded bumpers.  The 2014-2015 Select Squareback has square bumpers.  The 2018-2019 Select Squareback 1 and 1.5 both have square bumpers and the 2020-2021 Special Select Squareback 2 has square bumpers.

The numbers refer to the neck styles: 1 is a single bend shaft, 1.5 is a mini slant neck and 2 is a plumbers neck.

So, I have rolled this one and it is in fact a nice stick, but I could never own it. The biggest issue for me is how the putter sets up. What makes the new sb2 so appealing (among a few things) is that from address, the putter lines are evenly distributed. The top line and bumper portions are almost exactly the same width, split by a wider but well disguised center portion. The BB8W instead focuses most of the added width along the bumper portion, and it just makes it look very unbalanced to my eye, which is something I can’t reconcile.

I love the 2018 model since I’m more of a fan of the double bend shaft. PXG’s Closer model is also an option with the double bend. All 3 of them are great.

I was waiting for the Battle Ready Closer to come out

I am playing the PING Kushin Sigma G

I like the wide blade style the best

I am a straight thru putter so I need a face balanced putter with a double bend shaft

Will keep looking to see what pops up but appreciate the input

As an FYI, the 2015 Betti Queen Bee 6 was a wide-body, double bend & full shaft offset, face-balanced putter (the 2019 & 2021 models were half-shaft offset w/slight toe hang).  The 2015's are available used with some regularity.
