Change from 52, 56, 60 to 50, 54, 58?

Recommended Posts

I have titleist ap2 718 irons with vokey sm7 wedges in 52, 56, and 60.  I hit my 52 out to 120 yds, pw to 135-140, 9 150...I've never given it much thought till now, but I won a 58 and wondered if I could address th gap between my 52 and pw.  I am very use to my distances with my wedges bc I've been hitting them for so long, but should I force myself to change?

Thanks

I changed years ago when 46* PW became closer to the norm.  Kept my 4* games from there (unless a 45* set PW was what I was gaming) and am happy.  Never got comfortable with a 60* and went under the ball far too often when opening the face (likely all me, but w/e) and have no problems with the 58*.

Made the change this year feom 52/56/60 to 50/54/58. New wedges with all the grind options allow for better gapping while still being able to hit the shots. I’ve had to tweak my distances and am still learning how the ball will release on chip shots, but my Rapsodo has helped me out a lot and I’m able to flight the ball better with the lower lofted wedges.

@rockhound100bopd it really comes down to whether you are comfortable hitting specific yardages with the 52/56/60 vs the 50/54/58.

The other consideration is whether you want a specific bounce/grind configuration that isn't available in one of the  configurations.

I had been playing 50/54/60 for a long time off a 46* PW. This year I went to the set gap wedge at 51* since I really never swing that any less than 105 yards (my old 50 would either be 140 max, 125 stock, 105 smooth 3/4, and 105 3/4 back foot long pitch). So to take the forgiveness for the longer shot, and then went to 56/60.

you'll have a gap at 54-60, but ask yourself where you feel comfortable having a gap and put that gap there.

Just a matter of you being OK with the distance gap adjustments.  Expect to hit the 50*-54* a little farther than your 52*-56*.

Lofts and its effect on shot making are so personal, that there really isnt a general rule for these things.

Its not just loft that determines distances, but also your attack angle and turf interaction.

Different sole grinds can raise the contact point higher or lower, which would change spin rate and launch angle, which would also change distances.

Also its about how you use the wedges that would determine your loft setup. I dont think every player prefers to hit full shots with every wedge, so the symmetrical loft gapping seems to make little sense to me. (ie. 50-54-58 vs. 50-56-60)

Combine all that with course conditions near you (firm or soft greens, rough thickness, firm or soft sand, etc), I dont think anyone here can give you a proper yes or no answer.

I would never consider going back. With today's stronger lofted set PW's I think it makes even more sense now then back when I made the switch.

Switched to the 50-54-58 setup a few years back and it was a good decision. I will use the 50 sometimes for longer bunker shots but it is mostly a full swing club. I had a similar gap between pw and 52 of 15 to sometimes 20 yards, switching to a 50 degree gap wedge made hitting my numbers much easier and more consistent. I now use my 54 for majority of short game shots, unless short sided, needing more height/steeper land angle, or playing very fluffy sand (seems to rarely be the case these days).

If you're comfortable with your gaps and can hit the numbers in-between by clubbing up and swinging shorter/choking down then I see zero reason for you to change honestly. If you're not confident with that then it might be worth to experiment, could just be as simple as bending your 52 a bit. No need to change your whole setup just because you won the 58.

These are all good points, thank you!  I have a gift card to my local golf shop for $250 that is burning a hole, so maybe I'll get a 50 and 54.  However, my ap2s came with a 50, should I give it a try?  What do ppl think about set (ap2) gap wedges vs say vokey?

I had always played 50, 55, 50, but moved to 50, 54, 58 this season. I prefer the lower lofts for green side shots. I’m more consistent at adding loft if needed versus taking it off. I play the T100 irons and have the set pitching wedge and gap wedge, but have since moved to Vokey wedges in both spots. I use all four of my wedges green side depending on circumstance and just find the Vokeys to be more predictable. Sometimes with the set pitching or gap wedge a chip would come off hot and leave me somewhere I didn’t want to be. If you’re using the for full and partial swings, and not delicate chips the set wedges are great.

If you use your 50 pretty much just for full shots then use the set gap wedge. Otherwise use the Vokey if you're using a 50 it around the green a lot.

Idk About the people who say a set pw plays hot. My ap2 pw checks just fine so maybe it might be hot in the sense of giving it too much hand pop and not having the micro grooves or specialty grooves give that extra lil spin. But I’ve transitioned to 50-54-58 just to make sure my gap between pw/Gw are consistent. Personally I can get steep time to time and did it as a opportunity to offset potential middle/high face shot.
I also use all 4 “wedges” around the greens depending on the way I want to play the shot.  I like manipulating my wedges as well so you can catch me hitting the 50 from 80yards or 110-120 for example.

I recently went from 50/54/58 to 48/53/58 and barely noticed. Really happy with a new option at top of the bag and love my 53 and 58 combo around the greens.

I would say it is a lot about how you use your wedges. I personally use 56 (high bounce) for most shots around the green and carry a low-bounce-wider-soled 60 for everything the 56 cant handle.

52 is almost exclusively for yardage. I personally could cover all yardages with 52-58 but might lack versatility around the green. I have yet to find a LW (58) that does everything.

If you only use one wedge for all short shots and carry the rest for gapping purposes, I think the three wedge setup is possible if you can hit all the distances

I just spent $100 building a set gap wedge for my cmbs... for me, gap wedge is a pitching club not a chipping club, unless I’m going with a bump and run... I thought it made more sense to have the forgiveness of the set wedge and then two “specialty” wedges for the delicate stuff around the greens.

thus far, I’m very happy with the decision.

im a 6 handicap and make enough mediocre swings that my set gap wedge makes for sense for me... I can still hit the low arc spinner with it, and around the greens I don’t want the added spin from a specialty wedge with it.

I also really like the 50 / 54 / 58 setup... I can manipulate the 58 to hit a flop shot, but prefer the slightly lower loft for more full

shots... I don’t swing either sand or lob wedge full swing, so I don’t really care about the gapping vs my gap wedge, but it happens to be 50, so it all works out.

I started using what was then a gap wedge of about 50* for everything under 100 yards other than specialty shots in the 1970's and still do.  My set goes to the gap and I carry and 52&56.  I have done the 50-54-58, 54-60, 52-58 and 52-56-60.  Depends on the course I am plying most of the time.  My current course being on the prairie is pretty flat and my most lofted wedge of 56 which I pretty much use exclusively from the sand.  If I was comfortable with my current setup the 58 I won wouldn't make me change anything.

This me with the 60.  I really only use it if I NEED to elevate quickly, other than that it is just getting cute with shots.  The more I think about it, I have a hard time with the 120-130 yd shot, I don't play back on my pw very well.

Yeah. I tried a 60 moons ago when they were first popping up. Not sure I ever hot a good shot with it. Threw on the trash. I can lots of different things with that 58°
