And then there's the 18th. In many ways I'm glad there was no late minute drama on the hole. The removal of the grandstands, i.e. backstop, definitely changed the character of the hole. Yeah, and handful of players tried and failed, and a few hit a wedge and spun it back into the drink, but for the most part it played rather conventional and boring. I'd say it was a more negative, but again it really didn't matter with Patty sporting a two shot lead. Now, if it was a one shot lead who knows. I generally don't like tricked up courses, e.g. the two driveable par 4s at the Kia last weekend, but the "backstop" here has been part of the event for over a decade, and will most likely be back next year when the fans (hopefully) return.

 

I was initially thinking that the course could use a driveable par 4, but it would have to be late in the round to provide drama, and with 16 being such a tough hole, it would likely have to be the 15th. That said, I don't think a major needs fake drama, as yesterday's round showed.

18 was for sure a whole different animal without the back stop, takes away simply overclubbing from 200-240 out

 

Ko got lucky on her drive there as well 

 

Patty did say at one point she saw Ko’s name up there in her initial interview.  If she knew a major winner was close - then that steady finish is more impressive under all that pressure with no tour wins at all under her belt

 

The course must have been running so fast to put up those driving numbers and we know 100*F is also a big help as is desert golf

 

Even with perfect launch numbers at say 109 mph, max carry around 280, which means a roll out of 50 plus yards ....

Looking at Lydia's stats. She had one bogie in the last two rounds, and finished with 28 holes of bogie free golf.

 

She only managed 47 greens for the week (65%)?  She generally hits 70+ percent. Her scrambling was impressive, as she finished the week with 8 bogies. That's roughly 83% scrambling!

 

She averaged 66% of her fairways. I thought it was much higher than her average, but it's actually right around that mark. She hit 78% yesterday and Thursday, which is near her average from 2017.

I was traveling and had to catch up.  However I got to see the Sunday coverage.  That was one exciting round of golf.  I know Lydia was trending, but she went all crazy to make it interesting, but Patty built herself such a large lead, it probably would be hard to catch her.  To get your first win in a major is quite an achievement.  And did I hear that Patty was driving it over 300?  Regardless!  Well done and congrats!

Those are hard fairways to hit

 

I’ve played that course quite a few times right before the event.  The rough was up.  When the wind was blowing it was hard to get around in 75 (that’s from a deck back from the LPGA tees)

I was referring to the fact I think her drive hit a bird to keep it dry. It was a stupid, old joke! yes, that wedge was disappointing - especially in the circumstances.

She is a Grant Waite pupil.

 

Google Grant Waite.  You will see him explain how to coil without moving off the ball in the backswing, and it entails a straightening of the trail leg.

Just checked......Patty hit 61 GIR's followed by Phatlum 59 and Ally Ewing 58 tied with Gabby  ....Brooke had 57........

Back when Ariya won the USWO, she had a Trackman measured drive of about 158 mph ball speed with her 3 wood. If she ever had the courage to break out driver, that would put her just above 110 mph, just below the PGA Tour average.
