I thought for sure they'd have a band of rough where the grandstands were.  If your shot comes in to hard/fast it's getting wet, that's a bad shot and deserved result.  Hit one like Danielle and it just slowly rolls into the water seems harsh for not a bad shot at all.  With some rough at the back there's still a penalty cause you're pretty dead chipping from the back but you just don't get dinged with the penalty stroke. 

 

They think they added teeth to the 18th but they might have ended up de-clawing it.

They both carried their approaches too deep into the green. Looks like landing in the first few feet of the green is a must. 

 

That said they both hit 6 irons after Troy bombed 300+ yd drives. A fairway wood would be near impossible to stop. 

 

They do need to grow the rough up a little behind the green, but it's probably too late for that this year.

News coming out of the LPGA a couple of days ... all but lost in all of the other things going on ... but rookie Yealimi Noh was hit with a huge fine for slow play at the KIA Classic last week ($10,000 -- huge by LPGA standards given the smaller amounts of prize money). 

 

It was her second slow play infraction within the last 12 months.

Last year was a clownshow at the ANA with the fake wall back there. It made the finish complete trash and Korda should have won.

There's been a wall there for well over a decade. Nobody seemed to say anything when it was grandstands. They were trying to recreate the playing conditions from previous years.

 

We'll see how it goes. Keep in mind that the grandstands will very likely be back next year after the pandemic restrictions have been lifted.

Yuka had an eagle putt on the 18th, so it looks like it's possible. Of course she's a long hitter. They didn't show her approach, so no idea what club she used. 

 

Edit: They moved the tee up to 474 yds, so we're looking at a completely different hole than the one we saw last night during the charity event.

Bigger surprise of the day so far, Michelle or Shanshan? Both carded excellent rounds.

 

Don't like the shortened 18th. I'd rather see the hole lengthened with the wall in place. A shot from behind the green was never an easy up and down.

Lol, same as the match play last week on the men’s tour? Drivable par 4 over water with the grandstand behind it? Players were banging it off that long all week.

Or just make it a regular par 5. These are pros and this is a major. Not shortened, no wall.

Patty has had a good year so far. Bogie-free today to grab the clubhouse lead. 

 

The course is definitely gettable. Not sure where the players over par are dropping shots without offsetting them with birdies.

Pity that we only got to see one (or two?) of her shots today. 

 

It'll definitely be interesting to see how the "rookies" perform this season. With a year tec under their belt, they should be a lot more comfortable out there.

Textbook round of golf!  6 - birdies, no bogeys.  Hit every par 5 in two.  Driving average was 291 yards ... and her iron game was stunning.  17 of 18 GIRs despite hitting only 8 of 14 Fairways.   She's off to a great start this year (KIA classic excepted).  So good to see.   The UCLA Bruin brigade are out in force today ... both her and teammate Bronte Law are among the early leaders.

Very good and balanced field and super scoring in the morning wave, Big names at the top and i think -6 might be hard to beat in the afternoon wave. Nice to see the English girls in the early mix with Charlie Hull and Bronte Law, Mel Reid not too far back either.

 

Good round from Michelle with it being only her 3rd round back, her putter was very hot especially with her birdie bombs at 1,2 & 3, ShanShan incredible to think she didn't pick up a club in a full year to shoot -5. simply incredible.

 

Going to be a entertaining tournament. As my thoughts on the 18th I think its nice to have it a island green instead of a grandstand, the fake wall was just silly the last couple of years imo. great golf and hopefully more to come ^_^

Gotta believe that Shanshan not picking up a club for over a year is a bit of a stretch. She obviously didn't tee it up professionally since late 2019, but I have to assume she put in a lot of practice during that time.

 

BTW, the "fake wall" was only there in 2020. The grandstands have been there for decades, with the fill width put in place in 2012.
