MMT 125 TX vs UST Mamiya Recoil 125 Prototype - Replacement for X100

Hi all,

I am looking to replace my iron and wedge shafts (in the interim I am going to try and dowel my irons for vibration after a failed attempt with vibration dampening inserts). I currently play Mizuno MP5's with X100's 1 inch longer than standard and Cleveland RTX Wedges also 1 inch over.

Is there anyone with direct experiences of the above shafts and how they compare with the X100? Being based in South Africa there is 0 change of being able to test these before buying them so looking for some insights.

At this stage, from what I have read it will be MMT 125 TX Tapers in the Irons and MMT 125 TX Scoring Wedge for the wedges.

I will preface this without having hit the MMT but I have great interest in them as well. However, I do have the F5 prototypes and they are quite stout and feel more linear, like a PX 6.5 (which I have historically preferred.)

Due to the age of the F5 proto’s (they aren’t still a current product, are they?) and your location you may well be better off to go with the MMT’s. The reviews have been glowing and many have said they are a very close comparison to the X1’s.

First off, the 125 TX are in short supply.  I know club manufacturers are having a hard time getting them right now, so if you need them right away, this may be an issue for you.   I got lucky and snagged a 105 and 125 both in TX early on from a lucky source to try out.

FWIW I was playing the X100, then PX 6.5, then Recoil F5, then PX Catalyst 6.5 (graphite), then tested the MMT's.

I ordered a couple of 7 iron heads of my last set to do the trial(got them on ebay cheap).

The X100 and PX always felt harsh and heavy.  Consistency was great though.  Then a wrist injury made me try all kinds of inserts but they still felt a bit harsh and my wrist would often be sore.  I went from X100 to PX 6.5 for some added peak height and a smidge more spin.  My wrists made me decide to try graphite.

I tried the Recoil Prototypes and the Regular Recoils in 110 and 125 in F5 flex.  They were both excellent at dampening vibration but still giving some feedback, my wrists loved me.  The standard Recoils were the better fit as the spin and peak height was better for me(Higher in both).  The Recoil prototypes performed very much like the X100's.

The Catalyst were great too, the peak height was up, but the shaft weight was just too light for me.  They were in between the two Recoils shafts for me.  If they had these in a little heavier weight they would give the Recoils a run for their money, and I am not a fan of trying to guess on lead tape placement on the shaft to get them where I wanted them.

I got to the MMT, I will say they are good, very good in fact.  I did not care for the 125, as they just are heavier than I prefer even though I played 125+ gram shafts most of my golfing life.  TBH I did not see a huge difference between the 125 MMT and the 125 Recoil protos.  The MMT "feel" to me more like the X100, but the ball flight is very similar.   Now I only tested these in a 7 iron, so I cannot tell you if maybe there would be a difference in the longer irons or shorter irons.  However 7 iron for 7 iron I really didn't see much difference.   In the 105 vs the 110 recoil, I obviously still prefer the recoils.

Ball speed was up a little in the Recoil vs. the MMT.  The protos it was an average of 2.8 MPH faster and strike locations very similar according to foot powder was as close as I can tell without a GC4 or something similar.

Thanks for the thoughtful review,  very helpful
