SIM v TS2/TS3

Hi. I am around a 12 handicap and last year I went for my first driver fitting. Due to my swing speed and swing in general I was fitted with a TM SIM 9 degree, hzrdus smoke yellow X stiff shaft, which had great numbers on the trackman. I have used it for about 5/10 rounds and find myself very inconsistent off the tee. The good shots are really good but the bad are terrible. I previously has a Titleist 915 and loved it but got lured by the SIM. I'm now thinking about switching to a TS2 or TS3 to makeeore consistent off the tee. 

 

Any advice, experience or tips on these and whether to even contemplate the switch would be amazing.

The SIM is very low CG and low spin while being fairly middling in terms of MOI. This means that mishits will sting you a bit more, especially when it comes to left/right curvature on heel/toe shots respectively. IMO the stock SIM can be improved dramatically for this kind of struggle in two main ways:

1) Shorten the playing length (if stock). If you're playing the standard 45.75" and you aren't quite tall then there is a good chance that shortening the shaft (butt cutt) will help tighten up your strike pattern and thus your control. This can still be a bit case by case, but it is a pretty good bet, plus is also ties in with...

2) Weight modification. One of the reasons the stock SIM is so low spin but also somewhat unforgiving is the weight layout. The big 10g weight up front and the ~12G weight in the rear can be modified to significantly increase forgiveness. First you'll want to pick up a lighter front weight, I use 4g in mine. This will allow you to increase the rear weight both to make up for the 6g you've dropped from the front and the shortened shaft. This will have a noticeable impact on the stability and forgiveness of the head and help with those mishits. Combine that with the shorter length and IMO it is a no brainer.

That is very helpful. Thank you. I cant seem to find those weights in the UK. I am still pretty inclined to make the switch to the TS3, but will give the SIM a couple more rounds and a go at the range.

TS3 is great.   I found it to be more consistent than SIM.    And better ball flight with same shaft and loft setting as SIM.

I have both and got sucked in by Sim too having never really liked TM drivers.

Thanks, that is really helpful to know. I am pretty torn between giving it another season playing with the settings or just cutting my losses and going to the TS3.
