Does size matter?....

Recommended Posts

That's why the Pings never interested me. I know lots of people who swear by them (and still do), but I prefer smaller heads with a low profile on my fairways woods. That's why I like the V-steel 7w so much in my modern bag.

I bought a little Powerbilt 5w recently that has a tiny head, and I love it. Probably smaller in volume than many hybrids.

Totally agree.  I never could figure out how anyone could hit a fairway club that big.  My go to fairway back then sounds like yours.  A Powerbilt Citation 5 wood with a brass back weight.  That clubhead could fit in the palm of my hand.

I prefer a compact, shallow faced fairway wood too, though I’ve been hitting the Ping’s better recently.   Took awhile to really even start to get comfortable with them as they are so large.  I just find a compact fairway wood easier to play.

The Zing driver though, wow!   That thing is long and the club head size is perfect hitting off a tee.

Mine's got the brass backweight and a brass firing pin! Lovely little thing, and yes, it fits easily into the palm of my hand. It's easily the smallest 5w I have.

I'd really like to try the Ping drivers, either the Zings or EYE2s. Fairway woods not so much, but the drivers do look like they'd be tasty to whack off the tee.

Strolling through to note this thread.  Increasing fondness for Ping laminate woods.  Gradually adding to the inventory, a piece or two at a time.  For next to nothing, don't think I've paid more than $5 for one.  Becoming the first choice when I want to whack wood.  Especially the fairways (4 & 5 mostly).  Driver isn't bad either, for wood.   Have been wondering why I could seemingly hit the old Pings nearly as well as the V-Steel's.  So I grabbed the two implements that were in the bag for a semi-interesting comparison.  A Zinger and V, side by side.  Hmmm!!  Go big or go home?

Now concerned that this may have been a counter productive exercise.

Yep, there's no way I'd be hitting that Ping off the fairway. Tee club and tee club only. That's not the EYE2 Driver, is it?

I have a Zing Blonde driver and 3w that I've used off and on when I play lumber.  The driver size is nice, the 3w size put me off.  I had the same concerns mentioned already in this thread, generally preferring a lower profile, the face is so deep, etc.

Then I hit the 3w off the deck a few times.  Shocked how easy it was to get airborne.  Its obviously not as long as my 3* stronger King LTD 3w, but it was pretty good.

The driver....  this gives me the opportunity to once again say that in the past 5+ seasons, 2016 through now, my longest drivenot aided by cart path was with a Zing Blonde.  Its a distance I'd even be proud of in my longest hitting days, much less in my 50s.

Enough self serving crap.  LOL

I've foundthe Eye2 fairway woods easier to take, visually, they're not as deep as the Zings.  I also like the ZZLite shaft in them slightly better than the KT-M in the Zings.

I also prefer the ZZ Lite to the KT-M in the Zings.   But what sold me on this set of Zings when I saw them on the bay was the fact they had the stock PIng DGX shafts which is Dynamic Gold X100’s, not the KT-M.

And the Eye 2 and Karsten woods look cool in black but the Zing’s with their blonde finish are very pretty to look at.

Weren't the KT-M shafts the ones that had a reputation for bending?

That was the KT shaft, the predecessor of the KT-M.  And, I believe it was just irons; they bent due to the design of the Zing irons.

The KT-M shafts were created with more reinforcement in the tip section to combat the bending.

since you all brought them up....anyone know who can re-whip a Ping FW ?

I've got a nice E2 3W with a Aldila graphite shaft that snagged on something and broke the filament.

it doesn't look right with gaffers tape holding it together.

TIA.
