What is the objective of your 5-Wood?

I’ve been missing a 5-Wood in the bag for a while and I convinced myself to get one. For my purposes, it replaces my 2 iron and bridges the gap between my 3 iron and 3-wood. It permits higher flight/better descent angle than my 3 iron for approaching greens. What other benefits does it have? Why is a 5-Wood in your bag?

I use mine primarily for second shots on par5’s or as I age and lose distance second shots on long par4’s. Sometimes also for tee shots on a couple of under 300 yard par’4’s on my weekly league course. As an aside I just purchased  a Hogan Magnum laminated wood five wood that looked to be in real good shape, off of E bay. It will take me back to my younger years. Hopefully I can hit it. I would think the.loft on this old club would be around 20 degrees so it should almost be more like a current 7 wood in performance.

Fairway finder for me. 250 and i can work it both ways. Very reliable. Also great into par 5s

The OP pretty much answered the question himself. High loft FWs:

Fill gaps on the high end.

Are FW finders for those who struggle with the driver.

Deliver nice high trajectory shots for long approaches.

Come in handy for chipping out of thick rough.

Pretty worthwhile investment!

I'll piggyback off Beansy. I have always struggled with a 3W. Last year, something came over me to try an adjustable 5W with the loft turned down. Bought a pre-owned Epic Flash SZ with an old school Rombax 95x.

Turned down the loft, and I don't know if it was just the perfect combo, but I absolutely nuked that thing and hit beautiful high draws with it.

For me - it's just easier to hit. There was an article on here somewhere a few months back about research around whether or not the "perfect fit" 5-wood goes the same distance as a stock 3w.

Mostly second shots on par 5's but it has been used off the tee for tight fairways. It's my 220+ club.

<edit> off the deck its about as long as my 3w, so I pulled that because I am more consistent with the 5w.

It's my 240-250 carry club. If I have a second shot into a par 5 that's much longer than that, then I just lay up. I don't have a need for a 3 wood. For something more guaranteed off the tee, I go for my 21* hybrid. Driver > 5w > 21* hybrid works well for me on the top end of the bag.

So true. I probably carry my 5W in the same range. If I'm 270 out on a par 5, playing on average twice a month, I don't think the odds are in my favor to hit a 3W onto the green. Plus, if I shortside myself, I'm basically looking at a guaranteed par anyways. Lay it up and wedge it on.

In my mix, everything moves up one. I play 4W + 7W + 4i (shafted as hybrid for driving iron).

Back when I played 3W + 5W, the 5W was my distance club out of the rough, approach club from about 210, and tee club on longish par 3 holes. If getting home in two on a par 5 was at max range with a 3W, I'd lay up short with a 5W and wedge over the bunkers/ creek/ alligators for my approach.

And if the 3W was misbehaving, the 5W took over general long-range duties.

What's In The Bag (Summary as of October 2020)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5°, weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Tour Edge CB Pro Tungsten 4i-9i

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  Putter: Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip

Ball: Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

First off, I have mine turned down to 16.5 loft (G400 with Fujikura Tour Pro Spec 2.0 93X Shaft)

I use mine to putt through 5-10 yards of fringe/fairway more than anything else.

I originally got it to take the place of my hybrid that I am prone to hooking badly.

I sometimes like to think of it is a "250 off the tee" club (like when going 260 puts in you in a hazard/sand trap).  But I rarely hit it off the tee since more often than not it is windy, and I also hit a 2 iron off the tee all of the time with more confidence.  Into the wind, the 2 iron is every bit as long.  In crosswinds it's straighter with it's lower flight.  In a tail wind, I don't want any extra distance in the first place, and there I'm comfortable swinging out of my shoes with the 2 iron, which usually yields the same distance.

My home course is not suited to long approach shots on par 5's.  So I very rarely use it on those holes.  I rarely "go for it" on a par 5 at more than 210-215 out (wind neutral), which is my 5 iron distance.  More likely to hit it on a par 4 when I'm fourth and a mile because I had a disastrous tee shot that hit a tree or something.

It really just fills a gap.  That strong 3 wood (2 wood) isn't really good off the deck unless you want to roll it up.  It's a cannon off the tee at about 275 average.  Then there's the 230+ 2 iron, which also isn't really good off the deck unless you want to roll it up.  What's in between?  This.

My 5W is my 200-220 club. Very reliable and one of three clubs that I can consistently work both ways.

The 5w has mostly been a tee and/or recovery club for me. Easy to shape (specifically turning over) and elevate, but also easy to flight since I know no matter how far I lean the shaft it will still spin enough and get airborne.

I’m going to replace 5 wood with 7 wood since that’s what I play. I hit mine from everywhere. Off the tee on long par 3s or tight par 4s, fairway, rough. It’s been very good for me and it’s incredibly versatile.

For me:  Best "long club" off turf.  Easy height.  Easily flighted lower, and can work left or right.  Tee club that's not going through doglegs.  Occasional chipping.

Mine is turned down to a 17.25 and flat. (Ts3 with ventus black 8x)

I don’t need it into to many Par 5’s, so it is mostly a tee club for me.

my driver is over 300

3 iron is 250

the 5W slots in at about 275 carry off the tee.

3 woods I seem to be inconsistent with. Lots of hooks. And when I turn it down it just starts creeping in on the driver with a really hot flight.
