Callaway Epic Forged Irons Still Relevant?

I've got a chance to pick up a set of Callaway Epic Forged irons at a great price and was wondering how they would stack up with todays distance irons (P790's and such).  The appearance is nice and I know they were packed with tech back when they were new.  If you played or demo'd them how were the distances, playability and forgiveness?  Feedback on the Steelfiber FC shafts?

I'm looking for any feedback I can get. Thanks in advance for any help.

Long irons are hard to beat. I use the 4i as a driving iron with a hybrid shaft in it.

there was a few reviews on YT of this when they were first released, i remember watching one done by an English fellow using the 4i (at 18 or 19 degrees i think??) with the stock Steelfiber shaft and he was hammering it.

always wondered how with Epic Pro & Forged guys got on with their 8,9 & PW etc into greens, i know they were originally aimed at well heeled senior golfers upon release, but if any younger stronger guys got them i always wondered how they got on hitting into greens with the ice melting hot faces and steroid pumping lofts.

answer to OP, if that is the category you are looking in for irons then yes these are still relevant, still as good as any out there.

I just picked up an Epic Forged 4I with the standard Steelfiber shaft.  I also have a P790 2i with a much upgraded MMT125 shaft.  All I can say is that I’m going to be selling the 2i.

the Epic Forged feels so much better off the face, had a much better sound and the distance is better.  I just use it off the tee as a driving iron but I did go after one on the 2nd shot on a par 5.  235 out and I tried the Epic Forged and it went high, straight and landed softly.  I know every rages about the stronger loft but they have tech to launch them high and land softly.  I can still turn it down and hit a much lower shot that will run as well.  Callaway did a fantastic job with these and people are sleeping on them.  I wouldn’t use a full set as I don’t need the distance except for 1 specific purpose (driving iron) but for people who struggle with distance and longer golf courses, these would benefit them a lot. Also they are not as clunky as a lot of driving irons out there or even some larger faced game improvement irons and I go back to the feel and sound.  They have a forged face so that why they feel so nice but I find they give me confidence over the ball, either on the tee or off the deck.

I’ve been using them for a year. They’re the first SGI clubs I’ve ever had and I’m still not quite used to them BUT they’re rocket launchers. They’ve given me easy distance than inspires confidence especially on long holes. Longest iron in the bag is a 5 iron and it’s enough.

The steel fiber shafts look incredible and perform well. I wish I hit them a bit higher because the loft still dictates they go lower even with the technology but that’s the price you pay for such strong lofts.

I’m playing a 7 iron as my 6 iron and a 6 iron as my 5.  The lofts match up perfectly with my apex pros that way.  I really like them.  I don’t think 8 would have an issue playing a full set of them.  They look good at address and really feel good.  I also like the steelfiber shafts quite a bit.  I’m in recoils and when I bought the two epic forged I also bought recoil shafts to switch out to match the other clubs.  It never happened though.  The steelfibers performed great.

relevant (adj.) - appropriate to the current time or circumstances.

Let's see. I played a set of 1971 MacGregor MT* forged blades from 1974-1994. They eventually got bumped out cavity-back irons. MT clubhead no longer useful (or relevant) compared to CBs.

The Epic Forged came out in 2020. Featured hot face with modest offset. Stock shaft offering included Aerotech SteelFiber FC shafts in three flexes. FC = flight control, a progressive tip scheme that gives higher launch in longer irons. See above comments by @My2Dogs.

It's now 2021... and unless something happened during the pandemic, I'd say they're still relevant as a golf club for the GI/PD niche.  Relevant to you, that's another question. Any chance you can hit before you buy? If they don't work for you, it's not a really a "great price."
