JPX 921 Forged - who are they for?

Got the 921 forged a few months ago.  I’m a 4 cap sweeper. These clubs are everything I hoped for. Previously had Callaway Apex. The Mizuno 7 iron is 3-5 yards longer, and spin increased about 20% - holding greens better. The Mizuno shaft optimizer is the real deal. I landed on the Nippon Modus 120 stiff. Definitely improved proximity to pin.

Perfect balance of distance, accuracy and feel. Handicap dropped from 6 to 4 since I got them.

Interested in this take because I really like the Apexs, but would really like a set of Mizunos. And it seems like the 921s fit the bill.

One more question before my topic dies off. Has anyone purchased then dumped 921 Forged because they didn’t work for them? Bonus question, any direct comparisons to King Tour, i210, V6 Tour, T100s or even a couple of the hollow bodies (p770, Apex Pro)? Thanks for all the feedback.

I wouldn’t say they didn’t work for me, as I loved playing with the Forged 921 for the past 6 months..but I needed something different at this point with my game.

I’ve cut my handicap in half over the past 6 months. My main goal is distance control as I feel like I can get a hold of the Forged and it flies an extra 10 yards. Also I bought these off the rack and I have spin issues which doesn’t allow me to hold greens with the longer irons, so this all might be more due to that than the club itself.

I unexpectedly got fit into MP20 MMC recently. I honestly didn’t love the look and was hoping the Callaway Apex Pros or MP20 blades would’ve worked better. However the MMCs felt as good as blades, and there was minimum ball speed/carry distance drop off on off centered hits.

My fitting also put me in the Mitsubishi MMT 105s coming from the Nippon Modus 120s.

The MMCs are closer to the Tours than the Forged in looks (see picture) but closer to the Forged in forgiveness.

Overall I’m very happy with where I netted out and I wouldn’t have been able to make this decision without a really good fitting.

I recently bought a set of 921F custom from Mizuno because the price was right and I watched some video comparisons that seemed to show an anti-left tendency (right-handed player). In comparison with other irons from players that hit draws, these seemed to stay straight or even just push a little right. Ian from TXG mentioned the i230 seem to have this attribute as well.

My handicap index is 2-3 and I’m definitely a draw player with irons and my miss is the occasional hook. So these videos seemed encouraging. I’ve always played single piece forged player cavity backs (i.e. J15CB, ZX7). I found the ZX7 a little less likely to draw than J15CB, but not by much.

The early results seem to back up the videos. The 921F is straighter than my other clubs. I’ve even hit one and immediately thought oh crap that’s left! And yet it was just a baby draw to the left side of the green. Wow! So if you draw the ball and your miss is the occasional hook, give these (or likely 923F) a look.

Is anyone shooting low scores with a set of 921f? I’m asking because I’m a 2 cap sweeper with 90mph 7-iron speed and in a recent  indoor fitting the fitter didn’t even offer them to try and ultimately recommended 921 Tour (second place i210). I currently play iE1 w/Project X 6.0 and just want a change, especially a shaft change. To my eye 921 Forged look perfect; just the right size, well hidden offset, great looking bounce/sole width (speculation since I never hit them at all let alone on real grass). Should I proceed with i210’s?  I don’t really like the Tours... something about them psychologically plus worried about the sole config for the soft conditions where I play. I would love to know if other low 70’s shooters are playing 921 Forged.

Nearly 2 years later, but this is my reply to the thread. Last year I was playing the 921 HoTMetaL pros for the better part of the season as a roughly 6 handicap. I decided I wanted to go to a lighter shaft in the project XIO and I wanted a slightly higher launching and spinning iron, I decided on the 921 forged when they went on sale.

there was a slight learning curve at the beginning, because the chefs were 10 g lighter than what I was accustomed to. However, by the end of the season, despite late fall conditions and colder temperatures, I registered my best and second best rounds of my career, and finally broke par on the last day. My course was open. I had six birdies, and actually had a couple other luxe. I end of the season has a three handicap, which is the lowest in my career at age 54.

I love the look and feel of these irons. They are not quite as intimidating some thing like the 921 tour or the 223 iron in the MP series. However, they still have fantastic feel they are workable and they are forgiving I think anybody from scratch to 10 handicap could play these without trouble. I took a look at the newer model from this year, and to be honest, I see no reason for upgrading.

I’ve looked at the MMC’s as well but never hit them. I would like to hear your feedback if/when you get to test them all. Outdoor fitting and testing options are slim to none where I live and the courses aren’t open for the season yet.

I like an iron that has good east-west dispersion (like my pings). I get the feeling the fitter steered we away from 921 F because the north/south/distance control dispersion wouldn’t be as good as the Tours or i210.

I've been gaming MP20 MMCs this past year. Totally in love. Best irons I've played in a decade. Responsive to my swing, incredibly workable, but surprisingly forgiving (though that isn't what they sell). You probably have to be a decent golfer to play them, but you don't have to be great. Just my opinion, but if you have a chance to try MMCs, do it.
