More forgiveness 4iron replacement

In my set I go driver, 3w, TSI2 hybrid 18, then p790 irons. Thinking of replacing my 4 iron with a TSI3 hybrid or u510 3 iron. An I right in thinking the TSI3 will be more forgiving than my p790 4 iron. I’m not a big fan of the fairway looking hybrid.

P790 is already really forgiving 

 

a hybrid in theory will be slightly more - but it would depend on your swing and preferences and also the ball flight would be different

I’m not a fast swinger. 93 with driver. My 4 iron travels about the same as my 5 iron on most shots unless I pure one. While I was at golf Galaxy the guy working there told me the u510 would be more forgiving than the TSI3 hybrid. Looking at both, I don’t see it.

I'd recommend the TSi2 hybrid or the u510 if you want the iron. Still rather traditional in shape imo for TSi2 and more forgiving and higher launching. I don't think he's wrong saying the u510 is more forgiving than TSi3 hybrid they are probably very close in that regard.

It sounds like you have identified the point with your level of speed where your iron distance plateaus, which is when you switch to a hybrid typically. Unless you really love the look of the TSi3, is there any reason you wouldn't just get another TSi2 hybrid for that slot?

I just got a TaylorMade SIM DHY 4, and really enjoy it.  Easy enough to launch, confidence behind the ball.  I had wished they did a SIM UDI in the 4 iron loft, but now don't mind its size.  Used to have a Srixon, which I also liked, but the DHY is slightly longer shaft, which gaps to my hybrid slightly better.

I love my 5  wood...super easy to hit off the deck... for me hybrids are left and more left 

I plan to get fit for a 7 wood next month

Another option I’ve been playing with is using different shafts in the 4, 5, 6 irons to make them easier to launch and stop. 
 

I have similar swing speed to the OP and a smooth tempo. I find the center of the face on a mid/long iron without much difficulty. But if I use the same stiff shafts in those as in my scoring irons I don’t hit them high enough. Center contact/moderate swing speed calls for a reg flex shaft and preferably one that launches higher. 
 

After experimenting with some non-matching irons I’ve landed on the Nippon NS Pro 950 reg flex as a suitable shaft for my long irons. I use the Modus 120 stiff in my 7-AW. I just ordered new shafts for my 4/5/6 irons and plan to carry matching irons with slightly mismatched shafts.

I hit the TSI3 hybrid today and I hit it better than my 4 iron. I am more comfortable looking down at it than a 7 wood.

Alternatively... would your game/score benefit more from having an extra long iron/club OR an extra specialty wedge? Have you considered: (i) lofting your 3w up to a 4w (16.5/17*), (ii) increasing the loft of your 18* TSi2 hybrid to a 3i (20*), (iii) dropping the p790 4i (21*) from your bag entirely, and (iv) adding a 3rd/4th specialty wedge to your bag to improve your short game gapping! I'd wager that change will have a more significant impact on your game/score 🙂
