It definitely looks refinished. The original black oxide finish was high gloss on these. The paint fill in the line in the sole is also the wrong color.

Looks good to me. As far as I know the terylliums of that era weren’t really faked that often. What is throwing you off?

I guess it just looks really good for not being refinished (according to the seller).  I don’t feel like I ever see them in this condition at a reasonable price.

Good info right there. Thanks for that. I had a feeling it was refinished. And honestly, I wouldn’t even have a problem with that of the seller just disclosed it. But when they deny it then it makes me walk from the sale.

Certainly looks refinished, but there were some in-between versions that had features of the first model and the second model, i.e. the white boxed in TeI3 w/white surround insert.  Not many were made, but there were some released.  Not sure if the thread is on this board or TCC.  It looks like an original, but restored, 1.5 version.  Buy it!

P.S. Sometimes sellers/owners "think" they know the history on a putter, but are incorrect.  Unless purchased new from an SC dealer...

UPDATE: It's call a Generation 1.5 over on TCC.  There are pictures of others.  It was a transitional release, but SC himself didn't like the white rings around both the insert and the TeI3, so the second generation wound up with no rings around the TeI3.  If genuine, unique.  I'd have the paint fill and/or refinish redone correctly - unless  it is truly original!!!

The original TeI3 was made for Titleist/Cameron by Bob Bettinardi.  When the falling apart between Cameron and Bettinardi happened Cameron sourced the TeI3 from a SoCal machine shop (reportedly BOS Golf).  The tolerances of the new machine shop could not match Bettinardi so the copper inlay housing had to be milled a little larger than the inlay itself, hence the elastomer ring around it.

If this putter was in original condition mill marks should be present, which on this putter it appears that no milling marks are present in any picture.

How can you tell the difference between real and fake just from pictures?

A fake Scotty will have subtle differences in comparison to a legit one. The older ones weren’t really faked but lots of fake ones out there of the newer models. There is usually small differences in the font, shape or milling on the putter.
