MP20, ZX7, or Muira?

TFavor

Recommended Posts

I’m looking to move into a set of blades. I’ve been wanting MP20’s since I first saw them but as I’ve done some research it looks the srixon has some even better ones and Muira has a heckuva a name as well.
I’m down in the single digits now and dropping and won’t get rid of my AP3’s I will still game them primarily but I want to have a set of blades around for fun and to be able to work the blades ocasionally and hopefully transition full time into them in the next 12-18 months.
What’s the consensus on these irons?
I want the best feeling iron which I’ve heard is the MP20’s but looking for some feedback here. If I could do a poll I would.

TIA!

The answer is always Miura if the question is blades.

Just buy some cheap ones. Like 712mb or something. See if you even like them.

blades are going to be a Helluva step from ap3

ZX7s are Srixon’s cavity back, they are more forgiving than blade options. Srixon’s blade is the Z-Forged

I keep looking at Mizuno MP combo sets even though I am telling myself it will be a Miura combo for my next set.

If the Z Forged came in lefty, then I would likely have this same issue.

Those sole designs are pretty different from one another and are going to vary a great deal in their turf interaction.

I have been playing MP4s for a long time, and "accidentally" won some MC-501s on ebay in 7-PW. I was surprised how compact they were. They make the MP4s look like shovels almost. Super-duper thin topline, even with the slight offset in that model they are so nice to look at over the ball. Same forgiveness as the MP4, although MP4 has a bigger head so maybe it is more forgiving technically. I only bought 7-PW so I am thinking of combo'ing them with MP4 in the 6 slot until I can think of a more permanent solution which gives you an idea of a Miura MC vs a Mizuno MB. The Miura has a really nice thump to it and they might have finally done the impossible and kicked out the MP4.

For all intents and purposes, the MP20 blade is the same as the MP4, just slightly different appearance.

I have not hit the ZX7 but have held it and it also looks extremely nice behind the ball for something with that size of cavity.

I've hit both Mp20 and Zx7 and I ended up keeping the Zx7.

Was coming from t200 almost comparable to your transition.

The deciding factors:

-the added forgiveness on off strikes, zx7 we're better. The MP20 tho, were surprisingly forgiving for their size.

-Turf interaction for me was better with the ZX7, probably the biggest factor when I made my decision.

-Feel wise, the Mizuno are very soft, the copper layer makes them a delight to hit. But the feels was as good with the Srixon, if not better in a different way. The feel was more dense, but little less soft then Mizzy. Which in the end was the feel I preferred.

I've hit Miura but not enough to give any feedback.

Mp20 or Zx7 you can't go wrong with them. Obviously a fitting would be the best option. But if that's out of the equation, I wouldn't have any problem ordering them blindly 😁.

Mizuno lofts are quite "traditionnal", while the Zx7 are more modern (stronger).

Well one of those is a blade and the other is a CB. So yeah. The zx7 will be more forgiving

As others have noted, ZX7 aren't blades. Neither are a number of clubs being suggested. So it really depends on if you want blades or something more "player" than AP3.

If you do try them out, try to hit them on grass. Depending on your swing, the difference in mats and grass could be significant. Turf interaction is a thing...

I've wanted MP20s since they came out too - so that's my vote.  Miuras are super nice, but I cant imagine spending that much on a set of irons that will get destroyed by crappy range balls and sand..

I’m interested in this thread as well. I’d like to know which feels softest. I haven’t hit the MP20 in about a year. What I can remember is they were much more forgiving than I had anticipated and felt soft. The zx7 are fantastic and feel very good but not as soft as the MP20’s.

Curious to know if others agree or if I’m mis-remembering.

I've played/owned all three, currently have the zx7 and mb101. As others have said, zx7 isn't a blade, but it looks great and is one of the best irons on the market right now if you get along with the sole.

Mp20 vs MB101, I would give nod ( and have) to MB101, it just feels and looks how I want an MB to look. Some people don't want to spend the money on the Miura, which is fine, the MP20 fills that void.

As others have said already, the mp20 are blades and the zx7 are a compact cavity back. Honestly coming from ap3’s the mp20 should not be an option, unless you are talking about mp20 MMC or the HMB versions. I have hit the zx7 and it is very good, i just haven’t been able to test them outdoors on grass. I have also hit the mp20 MMC and it was good as well, offers a decent amount of forgiveness in a compact package. Looks a little thicker behind the ball than what I’ve become used to but still feels good for a multi-material iron. Have not hit the mp20 HMB but honestly those would be a better transition from ap3, as they are in the “players distance” category along with MMC. I personally liked the zx7 but I’m not sure how the V Sole will work for my swing until I get a chance to hit off grass. You will definitely want to try all these irons to see how the turf interaction is and what type of sole design works for you.

Ok I own all three and here is how I’d rank them for me.

Feel

MP20 > zx7 > miura

I prefer a pillowy soft and miura is a more electric firm feel

Forgiveness

Zx7 > mp20 > miura

Miura digs for me and I am fairly shallow.

Zx7 feels fast through the grass and slightly  fat shots are more forgiving. I tend to get too shallow and hit fat shots.

Zx7 is my current gamer. The feel is there with some bonus forgiveness. Lofts are jacked so my ego is stroked as well.

Thinking I’ll stick with this set for at least 2 weeks. 🤣

If feel is the only thing you’re after then I’d say mizuno for the ultra soft and miura for the unique electric feel.

I ended up with the MP20’s.
Since owning them have dropped 4 strokes off my handicap. So much better feel, workability and consistency.
I will not be going back to Titeleist after the feel of these MP20’s. I could not be happier with the decision I made.
And everyone saying if you’re coming out of an ap3 you should not go with blades, I’m sorry, you’re wrong. If anything, blades cause your ball striking to improve. Not because the club is easier to hit, on the contrary. Because it forces you to improve. You can tell the difference between a good strike and a bad strike. That feedback might be the best teacher. I’m a 7.4 handicap now and have much more control with the MP20’s than I ever did with the ap3’s and I’ve improved at a greater rate. Prior to buying the MP20’s I was an 11.4. I am never going to be that guy discouraging others from playing blades because they’re too hard. Gtfoh with that, I don’t agree.

This is perhaps the most enduring topic on this site. Plenty of threads arguing the benefits and liabilities of playing blades. From my foxhole, I can say that there are plenty of clubs other than blades that give feedback. Just a question of how much and how it manifests.

The bigger issue though is, what does a player do with that feedback? Unless someone is dedicated to deliberate practice designed to improve their ball-striking, all that great feedback is falling on deaf hands. So there really are two questions in play - am I good enough to play blades, and am I willing to do the work necessary to improve? I would argue if the answer to the second question is, "no", then the answer to the first questions is also, "no." As always, ymmv...
