Unpopular Equipment Opinions

Recommended Posts

Maybe not "unpopular", but a few of mine:

  • Shafts are merely springs between your hands and the club head, their high/low classifications are only theory and will never make a difference as much as loft and club design. I've personally hit several "high launch" shafts lower than some of the "low/low" shafts on the market.
  • Changing putters often is hard enough, but doing so while continuing to change head design, weight, grip etc. will lead to endless misery. At the most you should only change one variable at a time unless you've spent a good 60-90 minutes with a fitter and commit to using the new one for at least a month.
  • Few, if any, of the major OEMs know how to make a decent looking pitching wedge. Most of them look like they're from a different set of clubs.

I just don’t get along with those Sun Mountain putters

I wish Karsten was still alive so that Scotty could come up with some unique putter designs.

(don't say it....no I'm gonna do it). you're not good enough to care this much about equipment      lol.

Some better players (I'm not one of them) intentionally hit shots off the toe of the wedge for slower ball speeds on tricky, slippery, fast chip shots around the green, thus extending the grooves all over the face.  Granted, I agree that they're hideous, but they're there for a reason.

Yep. That’s the reason.  It’s not for full shot misses. That same wedge had meat up on the toe behind those grooves.

How 'bout this one: On a forum, don't ask me to pick your clubs.  You're an adult (man, woman, etc.)  Decide for your freakin' self, yeah?

Bu...but...but...I want to have my choices validated by my imaginary online friends!

Here's another one:

Folks make aesthetics too large a factor in their purchase decisions.

I can't imagine the man hours the major OEM's have to waste after a major club improvement has been invented on how to make the blasted thing pretty.

I gotta say NO to this.

Well with all the brands and clubs these days, odds are there are multiple clubs that would work pretty much as good as each other for you. So why not pick the one that looks the best to you and gives you a little more confidence. Especially in putters, an anser style blade from one company isn't really going to perform differently than another anser blade from another company (assuming length, loft, lie, etc. are the same). So pick the one that you like the looks of the best.

Which effects you in what way?

In almost no way that I can imagine. I thought this was the point of the thread.

I completely agree with this. So many good clubs out there these days, the mental edge of looks should be a primary factor.

One more unpopular one...

Irons should not have the same swing weight. It's an antiquated system.

Mine never have. They’ve always got lighter towards the long irons.  My 8-pw  however is going to be heavy.  I also don’t subscribe to 1/2 inch or even 3/8 gaps for length in between .  Reason being.   Whne I get  to a 7 iron at 1/2 inch gaps. I hit it a mile.  It’s a scoring club. Not a distance club.  My pitching wedge needs to be long for me to reach the ball. I don’t need a 38.5 inch 7 iron.

Let me preface this by saying I don't use iron headcovers, never will, and I completely agree that they're ugly as sin 99% of the time. But the hate on them and the people who use them is unnecessary. People are just trying to keep their shiny clubs shiny. Let people live.

You would've loved this place about a decade ago when some of those HEATED iron cover threads were going around. Never have understood why people cared so much

wait, heated iron covers? Battery or solar? Sign me up. Everyone knows that elevating iron face temperature gives you more ball speed.

People hating on Cameron for copying Ping head designs and then brag about their favorite underground putter maker that makes the same head designs. Sure, Cameron copied the head designs, but Scotty kicks Ping's butt in the esthetics department.

Does ping even make non insert putters anymore?

They released the PLD Tyne last year along with the Heppler line. The Vault line needs a serious refresh and I hope that's slated for 2022, if not I'll look at PLD putters from afar.
