Unpopular Equipment Opinions

Imagine being an engineer working for, say, Ping, and you've developed a club design that hits the ball longer and straighter.

But then you've got to turn over the design to a designer who went to Parsons art school.   He gets on CAD and completely screws up the engineering.

"It sucks," the engineer screams at him.

"Too bad," replies the designer.   "Our marketing guys can sell this.  And the WRX'ers will buy it!"

And here we are.

I wonder if different sports could be ranked for who uses chooses equipment based on looks over function as compared to other sports hahaha I bet golf would be at the top 🤣

I played a lot of softball.... on 4 teams at same time.  We knew exactly which bats were the hottest with the biggest sweet spots etc cause we tried them all in practice and we never played a bat cause its graphics were cooler lookin then a hotter bat, When a bat get a rep as a top bat it became sexy no matter how ugly and we always played our best performing bats in games.... time to pi$$missiles, hit scuds and go yard

Sounds like some of the conversations I enjoyed with Mike Taylor talking about how corporate Nike “made improvements so will sell more” to some very good tools for playing game he developed.

I don't know, Nike sells a lot of ugly basketball shoes to folks who will never touch a ball or court. They aren't buying them based on performance.

Some SB's go for $15k+ and you can bet they will never touch a skateboard.

<edit> yours for $20k.

SB's are for skateboarding, but based off the original Dunk that the original Jordans are based off of. But you shouldn't skate in $20k shoes IMO. 🤣

Haha as long as your cool with the view from that hill of missin the cut 🤣

Bigger issue.... folks wont even entertain trying certain clubs cause of the looks!  Try em take em for a test drive.... Nope! I see it all the time on Youtube testings where even guys l respect the most like Ian of TXG hit the shots of their lives and then totally dismiss ever playin them cause of their looks..... and if guys in the industry that I respect the most are doing that then its a systemic problem in the whole industry as everyone follows suit like sheep 🐑 and focuses way too much on looks.  I don't think I've ever said oh those are cool lookin clubs to a player.... but I have said oh thats a crap shot grab another or that shot was straight butter  🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑

If you think my hill would be the difference between making a cut or not, you've kind of missed the point of my post haha!

Between *well fitted* clubs the performance gains are marginal & those marginal 'gains' will benefit some and hurt others.  It obviously depends how you define gain but there's a lot of nuance to club performance.

Unpopular opinion:

Hybrids are not "hook machines". You're just applying a fairway wood swing to an upright, short, in-theory iron replacement, and turning the face over.

Marksman, not gun.

This is how it goes most places I think. You may give a guy one a side if he hasn't been able to play because you know he's got life stuff going on or whatever the reason. But I can't remember the last time I put money down on a match that used handicaps. Generally, the net scores at a club championship are flighted, and if that's the case, I'm good with it as long as everyone is staying in their flights. But a handicapped match? lol - NO. Just No.

How can a group of amateur players compete against each other without using handicap indexes ? At my regular course we have a group of about 24 players ranging from +2 to 13 handicap. Each week a field of about 16 to 20 players (4 or 5 foursomes) has a skins game. So if the field is 20 players, each one pays $20 for a prize pot of $400. Of that pot $200 is dedicated to skins and the other $200 goes to low scores.

How can a 7 handicap compete against a 0 index player without getting some strokes ? 100 years ago the origin of handicap indexes was to create a way that players of different skill levels could compete against each other.

Fitting is no guarantee of success. New TM irons are not working at all. Lost distance and control.

The "success" is for the person charging money for the fitting and, or the club (s) he is selling.

The handicap thing is fine IMHO as long as------- People are being honest and posting their HONEST scores--- The system was invented back in the days when people were relative honest now days some will cheat to win a dozen cheap golf balls or at least around here. I like the way your set up sounds and I take it those in your club are honest. Around here it would be a moot point because most of these cheap SOBs around here would not put up the $20 to win $400 to begin with. We had a similar informal game around here. We made team matches and did side bets. All the players knew each other and their games. We had a $20 limit with birdies and all. Everyone was honest and it was fun.

I am the same way since I play traditional lofted blades---- Like you I can care less what someone else hits and in no shape or form does it pertain to me. Hey I am not too proud to pull that 9 wood from 160 or the 5 iron depending on the shot required

There have always been three types of handicaps. Betting, bragging, honest. I guess that around the world 30% of players have betting caps, 20% bragging caps, 50% honest caps. The betting cap players are sandbaggers who usually win net event prizes. Private group regular games usually don't allow baggers to compete. The bragging cap players post only their low scores or create phony low scores to post. They do this to pose as a scratch level player and, or, to gain entry to scratch level tournaments.  Honest handicap players have the integrity to post any and all scores.
