Unpopular Equipment Opinions

Hybrids are terrible and most people playing them would be better off with a high lofted fairway wood.

Better to play a shaft that is too flexible than too stiff.

If you are playing bad, speed up your preshot routine.

More people need to actually PRACTICE putting instead of slapping balls around a putting green for an hour.

My 10 year old wedges, 58* and 56* are just as spinny and reliable as the current new wedges on the market.

Just curious, are they legal? I’m meaning do they meet the new groove specs.

Not alot of people take advantage of the discount on Aftermarket/Exotic shafts... Albeit it depends on your swing and getting fitted properly....

I hate playing through people regardless it’s always a sure thing bogey or worse, I’d rather watch them hit all day then me double the hole I play through in any situation lol.

One rare occasion, I was playing thru on a par 3.  Hit it stiff to 3 ft, sank the putt and played on.

I can play 9 holes hitting 3 balls in under 90 minutes with a cart (under an hour if I play straight one ball). It takes 2+ hours to do that walking. I ain't got that kinda time!

I golf because I love the physics of it and enjoy being out of the office mid day. But I can't take a 2+ hour lunch, 90 minutes is fine. I'm glad you can blow hours chasing a ball. Unfortunately I have other sh*t to do. 🤣

Not sure I would call playing golf blowing hours 😉. But then again, you're on your lunch break and that is pretty much a practice session on 9 holes (with or without multiple balls) and that's actually pretty cool. I've got plenty of other s*** to do as well, but I can shift it around that I don't have to stress to get off the course.

But if you're playing on a weekend, or when the course is full, it doesn't really matter then does it? On my 9 hole course, I can walk it in just about an 65-70 mins when there is no one in front of me and do that regularly in the evenings here. If it's full, that same 9 will take me about 90 mins, and we don't have carts on our course.

But I hear what you're saying, and to each his own 👍🏽.

I had a back injury, so carrying a bag is not in the cards. I can walk with a cart, but even then, it’s a bit much. I suppose if I had one of the carts that is remote, I could walk, but I haven’t gone there yet!

I did play much better when I walked for some reason. I used to play with a friend of mine who had multiple back surgeries and a knee surgery (born that way, not because of injury) and I found that I scored better when I played with another friend who walked. It dropped my handicap from a 5.4 to a 2.8 in a short time after my buddy who rode moved away to Florida.

...

my 2 cents anyways!

I honestly think that walking lets you mentally reset between shots such that you either forget the last bad shank, or look forward to striping the next one. And the other aspect that is overlooked, is that it becomes harder and harder as you get round the course and start getting tired that you actually feel like you're earning it. At least it motivates me to stay in shape and keep active in the off season.

Early in the pandemic, many of the courses here in Texas stayed open but required everyone to walk.  We all loved it. And waxed philosophically about how this was how golf was meant to be played. And that we were playing better golf.  And questioned why we were riding all the time.  The spring turned into summer and when it was  90+ degrees and humid, we quickly remembered why we rode.  Thankfully by that time the restrictions had eased up to allow us to ride.

I don't mind walking on a nice day.  But when summer hits, no thanks.

I guess as someone who's also walked in sweltering heat and in freezing cold, the elements just have to be dealt with. The way I see it is that riding takes away some of the physical aspect of playing the game which is already hard as it is. By getting tired or physically worn out, you introduce a reward for those that not only work on their swing, but also on their physical well being. But honestly, this is just my opinion, and I do not judge anyone if they choose to ride - I just feel like they're missing out on a lot.

p.s. where I live in the Northern Hemisphere, it is currently snowing out right now! If lucky, my course will open in about a month, and then I'll get to play till about the end of september. So, forgive me if I don't sympathise with you playing in the sweltering texan heat 😅

I think driving cost me 2 shots a round, and riding along cost me 3-4

Exactly the same! I have kept track of carrying vs riding...im always breaking 80 walking. I rarely break 80 riding with someone else in the cart. Definitely has something to do with feeling rushed, not "taking it all in", dropping off playing partner, looking for their ball etc.

I usually play solo and the cart just cuts the time between shots down. I am not rushing my shot(s). I feel like I can keep my groove vs walking. I'm tall with a long stride, so it's not like I walk slow.

Unfortunately the club only has 3 functional carts (it's kinda funny, really). So if there are others there before me, I could be walking. This is where my want for a scooter comes in. I bet with a fast scooter, I could shave another 10 minutes off my round.

I much prefer to walk. Even in the summer--which admittedly isn't all that hot here.

However, part of this is that I like to play golf in the morning. Even in the summer when we've got plenty of daylight, I'm not trying for a tee time after noon. Just gets in the way of the day. I'd like my round to be over around lunchtime. That means that I avoid being on the course during the hottest part of the day.

I played as a single a few months back and was paired with another single and a twosome riding. It was cart path only that day. The cart paths [mostly] go down the right side of holes, and one of the guys was a lefty who played a bit of a fade. I swear he walked more miles that day than I did lol...

I so want to modify my fatbike to carry my clubs. I think that’s the perfect solution. Ride a bike play golf and the fat tyres won’t damage the turf.

My grandfather showed my one of those old school home projector films of him and my grandmother golfing. The didn’t have carts back then, so they had a beer, wine and snack donkey....... yep, they loaded up a wagon full of pre-made sandwiches, beer, and wine that was pulled by a Donkey.

He told me most courses had them.... who knew ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
