i think it does...when i did the virtual ball fitting a few weeks ago, the guy i spoke too claimed jordan was using the 21X when i brought up the fact i saw him using the 17X at Bay Hill....he said he was "almost certain jordan is using the new X" didn't want to argue with him, even though i have a recording of jordan's ball hanging on the lip with clear 17X arrows. though he did admit some guys still use older models, no names were mentioned who did.

Maybe a bit, but at the end of the day, they just want it to say 'Titleist'.  They can always lie about things on how he is testing this and that or they are making a super special ball just for him blah blah blah.

Although he wasn't a staffer, didn't Toms years ago go to a local sports store and buy them out of the prior gen balls as he couldn't get any more from Titleist?

There's probably about 0.01% of the golfing public that would notice, or care, which version of the V1X he was playing.  You summed it up nicely in that first sentence.  When the 716 AP2's came out Jordan tried them and almost immediately went back to the 714's - reportedly he didn't like the turf interaction w/the 716's.  That might have bothered Titleist more at the time than the ball would have, but again they still said Titleist on them.

There is a reason why companies would offer hat/bag/headcover deals, because that is going to get the most airtime and noticeable from a distance.  Most don't know or care (I don't care at all) what year/model ball someone is playing, even more so when it's a Titleist ball as I think they are over rated 💰

Titleist doesn't care one bit.  There is even a guy at the ball plant in charge of making sure they run the older versions of the balls the pros need, and shipping them in the non descript white boxes directly to their lockers at each tour stop.

It doesn't bother Titleist (or any other OEM) one bit.  If it did bother Titleist, I bet they must be really pissed seeing Adam Scott using a set of irons that's almost 20 years old (until now).

If someone is going to play a Pro V1x because Jordan Spieth plays it, there's no way that influence is going to be less when they find out he's using the 2017 (or 2013 or 2007) version instead of the current one. The subtleties of one model versus earlier model amount to 0.00001% of the difference between Jordan Spieth's game and the weekend hack's. And you really can't make out the style of arrow on the side logo when you catch a glimpse of the "Titleist" logo on TV!

every manufacturers goal is to make a "better" product than the previous. well us knowledgeable golfers know that idea is pretty much maxed out for years now. they're just tweaking balls back and forth every 2 years of being firmer/softer, spinnier/less spin....of course titleist is just glad they're still using a titleist and not a competitors ball, but we the consumers are who they're selling too, not Jordan,JT, Adam etc...and we know tour influence is for the 90% of golfers who don't roam this site. at the end of the day the tour players are the best advertisement. titleist won't push them to switch because this is their tools and how they make their livelihood....so imo it doesn't bother titleist personally that jordan is using a 17X, but it does bother them if the 90% find out.

I've read past articles where pros have mentioned they play a non-current version of the Pro V1/Pro V1x for certain performance characteristics. Titleist supplies them with the ball.

It happens all the time, but I heard Jordan did finally switch to the 2021 ball because it was better in the wind.  Also, you can't tell by things like the alignment aids because those can be customized to the player and what they like to see.  So he could use the old alignment aid on the new ball.

Just like he used a set of AP2s from like college or something until the T100s came out.

Jordan is a player that takes a long time to convert to new stuff.

This is incorrect. Most balls are tracked on the USGA conformance page by their base alignment marking marking. You can add stuff to it but you can change the base design. If the marking doesn't line up with the ball design the ball is technically illegal to play.

Noted, but just because the ball doesn't match what joe public buys at the store doesn't mean the pro is using an illegal ball.  There are several ways they could accomplish this.  They could add a custom alignment aid AND still have the default mark, and of course Titleist can have it added to the list of balls that conform.

But maybe he keeps switching back and forth if folks are correct about seeing the old alignment aid.  But it's been said that he's switched already.

I swear I was watching the telecast yesterday, and it zoomed in on Speith’s ball as it stopped rolling. It looked like it had a black number on it indicating that it is the regular Pro V1 instead of the x. I did a rewind and watched it again to be sure.

Has anyone else noticed this?
