Agree.  His swing is so aesthetically pleasing it seems like he couldn't hit a bad shot if he tried.  But then he does.  Many times.

he was a few inches away from finishing a few strokes better, which would put him squarely in the middle of the pack. i think he'll do better tomorrow.

Round of the day goes to Ian Woosnam.  Now there's a trooper.  In so much pain, ready to walk off 11.  Still cards a 76.  Over par on the long tough holes for him, snagging birdies where he can.   What he pulled off today would be impossible for all you posers with a case of man flu.

This is awesome to watch! An opening round where not a single player went bogey free in the masters. 
 

Some would say the greens are unfair but Rose said no! 

This is a test in accuracy and scrambling. You will miss shots, you miss greens, you will get bogies. But how to handle it is the real test!

disagree ... he knows the rule ... he wasn't trying to cheat, but he knows the rule ... can't brush the sand ... harsh penalty relative to the intent, though there wasn't an intent to do anything ... just can't brush the sand ...

I mean, that's just absurd. We're talking like a pencil tip amount of sand. If they're willing to penalize Ancer for that, they must be capturing extremely hi res, close up shots of every bunker shot this weekend, right?

Unlike the Reed incident, he genuinely may not have even felt that or had any idea that happened. I’d be much more surprised if he did know it happened than if he didn’t.

it’s painful to watch him he is so mad playing at Augusta. He just doesn’t have the precision to be successful there.

Inches? Funny he was really emphasizing yardage in his interview (which was definitely an issue but to me, seemed a bit deflective and humping blame on his caddie instead of just owning his shite round), but on 4 he was so far right you never see anyone hitting from over there. He was spraying it all over, though his drive on 18 was a thing of beauty.

Posted earlier in the thread but didn’t get any response - anyone here attend any practice rounds or today? Curious how “normal” things are relative to previous years. Heard you can’t leave chairs unattended, how strict is that? Any normal viewing areas roped off? Merchandise/concessions normal (bag check/shipping available)?

The US Open at Winged Foot took precision too. This is a different kind of precision. But let’s be perfectly honest; Bryson played like a dog today, and it was very similar to how he played in November. Hitting it 375 doesn’t mean anything if you can’t get close on your second shot.

he walked the back 9 late monday and said he and the person he was with were the only two in sight when they were at amen corner.

Abe Ancer's caddie today....

 

"the greens are borderline dead, really stressed out, #9 they missed a 4 footer due the ball hitting one of the dead cracks on it."

 

"fairways are soft but the greens are so firm and are so fast that they're breaking double than what they usually do."

 

 

My thoughts are that they anticipated the overnight rain coming in for the next couple nights so they've stressed them out and will likely soak them as best they can in addition to the rain. Of course, Augusta know what they're doing but I think they really wanted to challenge the players today and through the week.

Love how the golf course is playing. Majors courses imo should challenge the players and test all aspects of their game, including patience and resolve.

Absolutely correct. For those that don’t agree.....clearly he did move a clump of sand behind the ball. He may not have seen it move but he could clearly see the clump was gone. Intent has no bearing here.

If you’re still not convinced.....write the rule as you think it should be. Exactly how much sand can the player shovel out of the way in his backswing? 
 None is the only answer.
