I may be the last one to realize this, but the Featured Groups on the Masters app is pretty great. Very evocative of the pace and feel of being there in person. And this morning I thought Brian Crowell and Colt Knost did a wonderful job of saying just enough and not too much.

Everything about the app is great. Honestly one point on Friday I just watched my phone for half an hour rather than coverage. You can pick the shots you want to see, it's cool.

As for coverage, I have the masters website favorites on the lap top and Japanese TV. No matter how Hideki does, it's the Hideki show... Chose all the players in the field, watching a lot of Tee shots, par 3s and approaches, so basically everything.

 

Connors at -6 looking so good. Think he had a 65 in the final round last year too. If he can do that again who knows? If not this Masters he's proved he's got the game for Augusta.

 

Leishman is another who is due. Wouldn't mind seeing him win a big one. 

 

Rose coming back would really complete his career. You know he'd have fun with the green jacket.

 

However, I think Matsuyama might make this one boring. When he gets into position he's pretty clutch. I think he may have had the lead in the PGA that Justin Thomas won, or he was tied with Thomas. His final rounds at majors are usually solid as hell. A lot of time he has the low round of the day. Take that which ever way you will.

It’s been a long time since Hideki won, let alone a major with a lead of this margin. The last couple times he’s had a chance to win like the Waste Management and maybe the PGA when when JT won? He didn’t pull through

I remember in school we had some classes tryin teach us Japanese, it’s impossible and assume the same in reverse.

English is taught in all Japanese grade schools, but adults are reluctant to speak if they are not proficient...it's a cultural thing.

 

Children, on the other hand, have no such inhibitions. If you ever need directions or help in Japan, it is best to ask a grade-school kid : )

Watching Hideki post weather delay was so fun. He’s been a let down recently but if he can pull it off tomorrow it would be awesome.  Hope he comes out and wins in a dominate way.

I lived in Japan for 27+ years. I knew Americans, Brits and Aussies who couldn't get on a bus in Japan after 20 years of living there. So, let's not get too judgmental.

 

Japanese are taught to read English, but there's no real chance to speak. The problem for Japanese is that English is full of idioms. US idioms can be bizarre and confusing.

 

"You really knocked out of the park today Hideki..." (which is also rude in Japanese culture. You never call someone by their first name unless you are friends or family)

 

In Matsuyama's case, if he makes one small grammatical or pronunciation error in English, he'll be hounded and mocked relentlessly by yahoos online. Sarcasm is not part of Japanese culture at all. It's considered rude. Japanese do NOT do sarcasm. It was unrecoverable for him. 

 

So, it's less risk to have his native English translator (I think it's the same American guy) there to answer than to risk a slip of the tongue.

 

He's a nice guy. I've met him. Give him a break. Or maybe let's see how good your Japanese is?

Who cares what language he speaks, he puts the little white ball away like a boss! Hope he gets it done tomorrow; always been solid around Augusta through the years, and here's to him planting his name in the history books tomorrow! Overdue for a big win, and the nation of Japan should be honored if that ends up being the case.

When I bought my Titleist VG3 irons in Tokyo, my fitter asked me if I wanted special grips.

 

I thought he was talking about the size as Japanese men tend to have smaller hands.

 

But he was a friend of Matsuyama and told me he could put an extra set of his actual grips on my irons.

 

Of course I accepted : ) They have the blue-ish turquoise end cap.

 

I haven't played much golf recently so they haven't needed to be changed. I will be sad when I have to change to new ones : (
