Hideki won't lose that lead, not a head case like Jordan or Rory in other years, Johnson increased that lead last year in final round.  11/15 Masters won by 54 hole leader.

Also said he feels better as there is less Japanese media this week.

Just seen the final round pin positions no way will anyone make a run now, literally the worst pins I've seen in a final round, has traditional ones 16, 18 etc, but the rest are ridiculous

Ok...

According to this thread Justin Rose had the tournament locked up yesterday when he got to 9 under after first couple of holes.  Who would have guessed JR would end up 4 back at the 54 break.  Just takes one slip up early and pressure sets in pretty quick.

One last thing then I'm done.

Matsuyama-san is not speaking to the English-speaking audience.

Japanese <-> English translation requires correct colloquial speech, not literal translation. His translator does a great job of doing that. Matsuyama-san understands what's being asked. He is smart enough to know that he's speaking to the Japanese audience who will be watching.

His Japanese and mannerisms are very "Japanese." I don't know how else to describe it. Japanese find his content and speech pleasing. That would not be the same if he spoke English.

You'd have to have lived there and understood the culture to understand it.

Thanks for sharing real experiences and an informed perspective!

Cause this is Murica ... he should talk Murican if he is in Murica!

Ya, in fact, TW should just coach HM on all a ‘Murican athlete needs to talk to media and look totally acclimated.

Be easy....

“Hey”- use this in greeting any media member.

“Gotta make putts”-use this when asked any question about the coming round

”Tough day. Just gonna get food and hit the range”-use after any bad round

Then if he wins or has a good round, he just combine them all.

”Hey, made some big putts. So thrilled. Gonna get food and hit the range”

I LOVE THE SMELL OF AZALEAS IN THE MORNING!  (And the Magnolia in my backyard just started its journey to burst into bloom yesterday!)

Tee times:  https://www.masters.com/en_US/players/pairings/index.html

CBS Sports Network will be on the range at 10:00 a.m. Central Time!

My wife bought peach ice cream and is making snickerdoodles so we can have Masters ice cream sandwiches and I'll have pimento cheese spread made here pretty soon! Already drinking coffee in my Masters mug!

Forget the announcers the wieners want to whine about, forget whether Hideki understands you (some folks on here I'm sure he's happy not to understand, lol), embrace the majesty of Augusta National and the best day every year of American championship golf!

Pretty sure sarcasm but So sad to me people actually have this tunnel vision worldview. Get out a little see the world lol

I don't know if it was caught on video(and frankly I'm too lazy to search it), but there is a story that John McEnroe, in one of his tantrums on a chair umpire, when the umpire spoke to him a language other than English, yelled back to him "Speak American!!!"

Or for those who are fans of great television, Casey and Dan from SportsNight are arguing about how many languages Casey speaks.  Dan:"You speak three languages."  Casey :"No, I speak 4."  Dan:  "You speak French, Spanish and German."  Casey: "I also dabble in a little English."

I wonder this.  Question not statement.  Should we worry about him if he doesn’t get this done ?  As in will he be ridiculed or outcast as a failure ?   Or does the Japanese culture allow for multiple attempts?

I think it sounds bad me asking that.  I don’t mean it that way.

Japan has a decent list of golfers who couldn't quite get it done in a major. A lot of them are still beloved... The most interesting thing I heard emphasized this week was about how this is his 10th Masters. I think having that kind of staying power in America is a point of pride. A lot of players from here make a name from themselves and then return where life is seen as more safe or convenient or comfortable. Jumbo won everything under the sun here, but he isn't held in very high regard, same with Ishikawa Ryo. Winning on the PGA tour is enough, generally speaking.

Matsuyama is well past that. He is the face of Japanese golf. I hope he holds on. It would go a long way to growing the game here in Japan, giving more players belief they can win against the best. And hopefully inspire more young golfers to study English for when they leave for the big tour.

But, I have to say, it is bloody good here. The courses are nice, they are never crowded. The food is second to none. It is so peaceful and quiet day to day. If I grew up here and didn't know any better, I don't know in what kind of light I would view contemporary Western culture. Nevertheless, I think it's widely recognized that to be the best in any field one needs to go through the crucible of living in the West for even just a little. Given all that Matsuyama is more or less revered, but it is the Masters and a lot of hopes hang in the balance.

Just an observation, not looking to start a flame war. But I've noticed that any ads for clubs on the lead up programming (yes, I realize that there aren't any club ads during the CBS live coverage), but there are a LOT of blades shown in shots of the players after hitting iron shots, including 180 yard and longer shots. It's also interesting the clubs used for long non driver/fairway shots. It seems there are very few hybrids shown versus long irons, blades being used in quite a few of those situations. I wonder if that isn't irritating for the equipment companies' marketing departments?

most of the asiatic languages are impossibly different than Latin and Cyrillic...

they are agglutinative and heavy use of pitch accent..

what that means is u add to words like ornaments on a Christmas tree with the ornaments being tonal sounds describing indirect objects or even verbs...

But never irregular verbs...so they have nothing in their linguistic sensibilities to express tenses of irregular verbs like drink(tenses include drunk, drank, not drinked)....

regular verbs like “walk” use tenses “ed”, “ing”, “s” etc to express inflection...

and the tonal, impossibly complex phonotactic sounds are, to Latin speakers, impossible to convey...

Try the following exercise to understand my point...

say “red leather, yellow leather” repeatedly...

Most Latin based speakers will get tongue tied and never overcome the ability to say this phrase due to the tongues position which is not learned during the very complex process of language implantation as a child...

so Hideki, Iike the baseball phenom Ichiro Suzuki, does not want to say “red leather, yellow leather” on national tv....

Add to that the agglutinative nature of Japanese and you would speak in an almost telegraphic style of subject-object-verb and often “misuse” plurality, verbs and indirect objects...the list is long and u can see

thus sounding like a tongue-tied person with oddly organized sentences...

you can think of how Comanches in texas spoke after Mackenzie brought in the final band under quanah Parker, the son of cynthia ann parker(most famous Indian captive in texas history known as the white squaw) and peta nokona...

Long story short, the Comanche dialect of shosoni origin was the dominant language of texas tribes and it used whispering levels to express verb tenses...

So when quanah learned his mother’s [former] tongue, pun intended, he would speak in telegraphic, tonal variations...

saying something like “me big man in band when big water war come then” as opposed to “I was the principle war chief of the Antelope Comanches during the Red River Wars.”

anyhow, Hideki is understandably concerned with speaking in platitudes and scripted sentences he has practiced...

we are lucky to have a Latin translator to convey the complex thoughts of a great player...

A translator gives us Hidekis true answers rather than BS

sidenote, anyone interested in texas or Comanches should read this...I find it to be the definitive treatise on the most terrifying people to ever walk the earth:

In a different vein, but just as fascinating, I picked up a cool biography of Kit Carson last summer and still love Three Roads to the Alamo!!!!

There - post-Masters book club folks!

Most people aren’t that observant. Most people just consume what the tv gives them.

I'll add a little to that, with a little disagreement. I think Jumbo is held in pretty high regard, but not on the same level as, say Aoki Isao, because Jumbo never won on the PGA. Most wins on the Japan Tour, and some top tens in the Majors, but no wins.

But, yeah, Matsuyama's staying power and his repeated wins on the PGATour have definitely earned him respect. I played golf today (in Japan), and at lunch the Japanese guys were loving that eagle in the third round.

Of course, I shut them up by saying, "yes, but can he conjugate the verb 'to hanglide' correctly?"🤣

Anyway, if he pulls off the win tomorrow/today, I reckon he'll be up there with Ichiro in sports star status in Japan.

They have a museum for Ryu Ishikawa and he’s still insanely popular there and can’t even get on the PGA tour. Hideki will be fine 🙂

when I visit there I love going to ueno/asakusa area with my wife’s friend who speaks no English btw and perusing all the used golf shops. Barrels and barrels of forged irons, it’s a golfwrx paradise!! We have the greatest time and golf is enough for us to understand and be friends

Aoki, Nakajima even Maruyama or Katayama were all gentleman, or at least fit a respectable, gentlemanly mold. I was surprised to hear stories about how outside agents would intimidate Jumbo's fellow competitors. This was all tied in with gambling. It's crazy to even think that that could exist in golf - like hockey players from the Soviet union being extorted by the folks back home etc. I think that dirty little secret taints his legacy...

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, Jumbo certainly didn't fit the "gentleman" image. I don't think he ever wanted to, either. But when it came to a battle of tasteless sweaters, that guy could blow the opposition out of the water; even Faldo's Pringles didn't stand a chance.
