Tiger shot 37 on the back 9 in 2005 en route to his victory, bogeying the final 2 holes to fall into a playoff. He shot 72 in the round.

 

Matsuyama could shoot 37/38 on the back and shoot around 72 and still win. If he still wins, does it really matter how he finished? Nobody will remember it in 5 years.

It’s not a hard shot but you do have to hit it solid 

 

But, how many guys had that shot within 2 shots of the lead on Sunday?

It's one of the worst shots you could ever imagine hitting - true. Especially after birds on the 4 previous holes. I imagine he will bounce back and win a major sometime though. He's too good.

Sometimes the order of play is a huge factor.  I don't know about Hideki if he has to go first on 16.  I think Xander and maybe his caddie made the call to go for it and put a ton of pressure on Hideki to have to make a huge shot.

He also hit a poor shot after Hideki put it in the water on 15.

Pushed it into the bunker.

If anything he was more nervous than Hideki was as soon as the door opened slightly.

Reminds me of Tommy Fleetwood - looks good until the pressure mounts.

That's the thing, though, there is no "going for it." It is not a difficult pin. If you push it a bit, you have a 6 foot par putt. It is just not a difficult golf shot. It is a difficult shot under Masters pressure only.

I loved watching Trevino play, but Xander's already got better finishes at Augusta than Lee ever did.

But, you still can't hit it where he did. If he hits 100 balls from there, any other time, zero go there. That's a choke.
