Midland Hills in MN. Fully restored in a couple months too.

Yep. I’m a member at Midland Hills. Front 9 opening this week. Back 9 will open in a few weeks.

Exciting stuff for you guys!   I was interested in who is leading the restoration and with some searching, discovered that it is Jim Urbina.  I also found this great article about the discovery of some of the original drawings a few years back that are guiding the project:

Lookout Mountain is an interesting Raynor course. Very challenging. Definitely a mountain course. Overall I think it would be somewhat underwhelming for a player looking for a non-local membership.

They've had financial struggles over the years which is kind of inexcusable considering the wealth in that area. Many serious golfers who live nearby play more at Chattanooga G&CC or The Honors Course and use Lookout Mountain as a backup.

A few years back the nearby Fairyland Club and the Golf Club combined their operations and membership, so now if you belong to one you belong to the other. Fairyland is more of a tennis/pool/dinner/social club with incredible brow views. Not sure how a non-resident membership package might look.

Some people go down tik tok rabbit holes for hours.....mine is golf architecture.  Cool find.

Forsgate has 2 courses. One was orignally  designed by Hal Purdy and the other was designed by CS Banks. As far as I know Raynor had nothing to do with Forsgate.

The mind isn't what it used to be - you are correct.

After some googling:  Banks worked with Raynor (and Macdonald), including on Mid Ocean, Yale, and Yeamans Hall, and carried on ten of his projects after Raynor died in 1926.  Forsgate was not one of these projects, which came to Banks on his own in 1930.  It seems Banks died the year Forsgate opened (1931) and Forsgate is one of the rare quality designs that emerged in the midst of the Great Depression.

Rock Spring in NJ.  public course.

Have you played Rock Spring this year yet? Played it twice last year and will definitely go back several times this year if conditions are decent. A lot of optical subtleties that you need to be aware of. Really enjoyed the course.

havent gone yet.  just aerated like 2 weeks after opening so waiting it out.  buddy played it before the aeration and said was good but hes also never played it before.

got beat up later in season last year.  also, the secret of rock spring got out.  was easy to book a tee time early season unlike other local courses that were packed) bc you have to book directly on their site but late in the season, tee times were hard to come by (like everywhere else).

Lookout non resident was very reasonable last year when I considered it.  They are close to doing a full master plan with Gil Hanse - love Chattanooga but can’t get that way enough

I would be interested to see what Hanse could do for Lookout. I like the course, but I find several of the holes rather bland.

If Hanse (or his company) could do to Lookout what they did at Sewanee it would be worth every penny.

Following along with interest.   The Rock Spring web site says it is only one of two Raynor courses open to the public.  Which is the other?

Greenbrier - Old White. There was speculation that Raynor did some amount of work up at Thousand Islands CC in far upstate NY, but that appears not to be the case. Also, Raynor (not Donald Ross, as many think) originally laid out Lake Wales CC here in Florida, but there's not really anything that distinguishes the course as his creation. Greenbrier Old White is wonderful, though. Expensive, but wonderful.

Bluemound Golf & CC in Wauwatosa, WI.  I grew up caddying there and that's still one of my favorite courses.
