I Think My GI Irons are Hurting My Game

I don't have the MP 30's yet.  They should arrive sometime next week, or maybe even this Friday.  The shafts will be a bit different, but not hugely so.  I built my JPX 900's with AMT Tour White, so the long irons are lighter, but not sure how much that will affect things, other than making them easier to swing.  I also built them to D3 swingweight, so that should be the same, or at least very close.  I'm super excited to get the MP 30's as they are my favorite iron of all time and it's been about 11 years since I had a set.  They're not exactly easy to come by in left-handed these days.  And they're probably about as bladey as I want to get, at least for right now.  MY club has a SkyTrak, so I might be able to do a head to head with that.  Not a Trackman by any means, but it should work.

Out of the 3 AMT options (red, black and white) the white are the lowest launching, lowest spinning. That might be contributing to your green holding issues.

They don't spin any less than DG, and DG spins plenty. I'm pretty certain it's not the clubs now. The other members have said that the greens are just harder than normal right now.

I played freshly punched greens yesterday and was quite surprised at the greens I stuck. It was a long course (for me) and I stuck some serious burners.  Stuck a few longer clubs, 3 with a 6i, 1 with a 5i and 2 with a 4i. One of the 4i stuck mostly for hitting the flag, but the other still stayed on it's own.  All this with clubs built to fight my high ball flight. i500's with CTaper stiff shafts.

I've spent the winter hitting with an alignment stick in the butt of a grip to keep my hands quieter and use more body. This resulted in some of my chips actually checking up with lower ball flight.

As for OP question, I played MP30s prior to a "fitting" for more forgiving JPX 900 Forged. Struggled w my ball striking for 2 years, but since it was my first fitting and first brand new set of irons, I decided I had to make it work.

I now play MP-20 MMCS and I'm playing the best golf of my life.

Also, if you can hit MP30s well, you wouldn't have any issues with new blades or maybe better yet an iron like the MMCs.

You said you played your best your best golf with MP30s.  So why did you stop using them in the first place?

I had to sell then because I needed the money at the time. It sucked.

Yeah, that does suck.  Sorry to hear that.  Looks like your fortunes have changed, though.  That's good news.

I play a lot at Grand National in Alabama.  It's a Robert Trent Jones designed course on the relatively famous RTJ Trail.  They used hold the Barbasol Open on it until a couple of years ago.

I can remember 10 years ago when they redid the greens on the Lake Course.  They were rock hard for the first year or so.  And by rock hard, I mean that no matter how high and with how much spin you hit your approach shot, it was guaranteed to bounce at least 10 feet in the air and roll off the back of the green.  You actually had to land your ball in front of the green to have a chance of holding the green.  You might experience the same at your course for awhile until the greens take, regardless of what set of irons you use.

I put the Mp 30's in the bag today, and I am definitely hitting them better than the JPX 900 Hot Metals.  They fly a bit higher and definitely spin more.  Obviously they aren't as long, but they still hold their own.  And they feel so freaking good!  The difference is night and day.  Very, VERY glad I bought them.  They are like old friends that I haven't seen in a long time.  No way in hell I'm ever letting this set go.  Now I just need to reshaft my 21 degree MP Fli Hi 3 iron and I'll be in hog heaven.  I had to drop a wedge, but I never used a gap wedge back in the day and scored pretty well.

Every time I start to blame my clubs/shafts/shoes for something I ask myself: "Self, if you handed this club/shaft/etc to a tour player, would they be able to hit it well enough?"

The answer is always "Yes."

But F that. It's always the equipments fault and new stuff is ordered weekly!

I think not though! Tour player would and do want specific stuff... they actually are soo picky  they need tour trucks to be at every tournament! Lol so we are better... see.

Actually until this year Brooks Koepka was playing 919JPX.  And he did not have a deal with Mizuno  or anyone else.  The main, if not only reason he switched to ZR7 irons is that he signed a deal  with Srixon.  So don't say no pros play JPX's.  He is not only a PGA pro but one of the best in the world.

Ok.
