Windiest day you have ever played? Wind stories?

My first year of teaching was the 1979-80 school year. On October 3, 1979 we had a teacher in-service day which meant 1/2 day for the students and afternoon meetings for the teachers. Fortunately, this afternoon was for our staff to be certified by the American Red Cross in first aid. I already had my first aid certificate and so did two other teachers and an administrator. With the afternoon free, we decided to play golf at St. Anne Country Club in Feeding Hills, Massachustts. We teed off to partly cloudy skies at about 1:45. At around 2:45, the skies darkened and the wind became crazy strong. We continued to play on despite the crazy conditions. At approximately 3:00 I was standing on the tee box ready to hit my drive with the wind at my back. My ball flew long and straight but it appeared to never come down. Before I could gloat, the large maple tree behind the tee box was uprooted by the wind. Suddenly, we had trouble standing. Nothing else seemed to matter as we hustled our butts to the clubhouse. Minutes after arriving at the clubhouse, we could clearly see the funnel cloud approaching from Suffield, Connecticut. It cut through the backend of the course ripping up trees along its path. The clubhouse was never touched and the parking lot was spared damage, too. The backend of the course was shredded. The Bradley International airport, especially the air museum lost many planes and buildings. It was a sad day in our area. Three people lost their life due to this tornado. We were very lucky.

At Baylands Golf Links (Palo Alto, Ca), hole 17, 220 yards, uphill par 3.  The first person took a 5 wood and was way short.  Second took a 3 wood and was way short as well.  So I I said, what the hell, I’m taking driver.  My normal carry with a driver is 270.  I figure I’d choke up and take a tad off.  I hit one that I and everyone thought would be good.  Walked up and I was 10 yards short of the green.

On #18, in the opposite direction (wind at our back), a 511 yard par 5.  I smoked a drive and was left with 155 to a front pin. One of the guys I was playing with was about 165 away and he hit a great shot that ended up over the green.   I asked what he hit and he said an 8 iron, his 150 club.   Totally confused, I picked up my 50 degree gap wedge, which I hit around 110.   I pured it and it landed about 15 yards past the pin right onto a slope.  It spun back down the slope and ended up 5 feet away for eagle.  Missed the putt and had a tap in birdie.

Windiest day for me was when I played in the Craw's Nest Tassie at Carnoustie GC (Championship Course) 10 years ago off the medal tees. It was blowing constantly at 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Golf balls were getting blown off the greens and I must admit I lost my rag on the 6th green when my ball was 4 foot from the pin and when I was about to putt it got blown 25 feet down a slope (this was before the rule change when you can now replace it).  🤕

I live in eastern NM and it is ALWAYS windy here. It's also at 4,300ft above sea level so ball go far. #2 at the local muni is a par 3 that can play up to 220 with a back pin. My stock 8 iron goes 175-180 or so and it is consistently the right club on this hole. #4 is a drivable par 4 that usually plays about 340 to the middle. It's also usually playing downwind. After slicing a drive OB I pulled 3 wood to get one in play and I hit it to bout 20ft pin high. Missed the putt but a tap in bogey.

Desert Dunes in Desert Hot Springs in steady 35-40 mph.  Anybody from the area or any of our Canadian friends that winter there and have played it in windy conditions will understand.  Absolutely 100% not enjoyable.

My most memorable windy golf day was at Desert Dunes also. I was in PS for a conference. I setup my booth and headed for the course. High winds and dust storms were predicted for late evening, but it wasn't really bad when I got there, maybe a steady 10-15 from the west. That changed pretty soon of course. I finished 4 and headed to 5 tee and it had started blowing pretty hard. I had decided to play the gold tees instead of the tips and the hole was about 165 on my watch. At that time, I got about 225 out of a normal 3w and 165 was a 7i. I chose to go with the 3w and just made the front edge of the green. Don't even remember 6, but 7 was downwind and I hit a 7w to the front edge of the green and was lickin' my chops on the eagle possibility. I decided to play a little bump & run, chipped it a few feet onto the green with my SW and watched it roll all the way across the green & into the lake! #8 was crosswind with a front pin. I hit an 8i on a line just left of #9 back tee and it blew back to the green and ran off into the front left trap. Needless to say, I was awfully gritty when I headed to #9. 535 into this wind and I noticed in the distance what looked like brown hills that I hadn't noticed when I started. Driver, 3w, 3w PW and 3 putts and I headed for the car cause those brown hills were getting closer really fast. First dust storm I ever saw. Got out on the hwy and there were three semis that had blown over on their sides.
