Just ordered a blacked out set of irons and now I am wondering how I clean the faces?!

What’s up guys? I just bought these beautiful Cobra Forged CB/MB combo set. I am super excited. I have never owned a set of blacked out irons. How do I clean the faces without completely ruining the black club faces? Can I get these irons wet or will that ruin the black? 

My old clubs I always cleaned the face after a round or two. Now I am questioning how to do that without ruining the black finish? Anybody own these or got any tips? I heard Cobra did a great job with the DBM black finish. How well will these hold up over time. I’m surprised there’s so little posts on these irons on this board.

They'll be fine.  Just clean as normal.

The black finish will wear on the face, so don’t worry too much. Just try to strike it off the center so it creates a cool wear pattern lol

I play Callaway X-24 Hot irons (i know outdated) and they are the same all black w/ graphite shafts. After playing them for 9 years you will notice the black starts to fade and wear off and it turns into silver, especially on the wedges and clubs you hit a lot.

 

It is actually kind of cool because now some of my iron faces have this silver/black fade gunmetal thing going on.

I use a toothbrush & soapy water. Just don’t use a metal bristle brush.

FYI wiping them clean after every shot so you aren't hitting a ball off a dirty club face will go a long way also in maintaining that black finish. Dirt and sand ect. on the face when you strike the ball will do more damage to the finish then just striking the ball.

 

As far as proper cleaning after rounds, I'd think just a brush with mild bristles on it will clean nicely without damaging the finish, that's what I use like a little pot scrubber brush.

The best thing to do with them is stay far, far away from driving ranges. The black will inevitably wear away to a sort of pewter color in the hitting area but a few 40-ball buckets on a sandy driving range will make "inevitably" more like "within a matter of days".

I've got the Ping Glide wedges in black and after one season and a lot of balls, they haven't worn off at all.

I guess I am not worried about a wear spot from the ball. Just when i clean the face before a round or a situation like that. Don’t want to rub the faces clean. I definitely won’t use a brush.

This.  I'm really not sure why some people make such a big deal about cleaning clubs.  A wet towel and a tee do wonders for cleaning clubs and grooves after every shot... no real need for post-round or pre-round cleaning.  And you really should make sure your clubs are clean *after every shot* so that it is ready for your next shot, otherwise you're wasting the benefits of having grooves on your irons.

Wipe with a wet towel after every shot and use a tee/club brush if dirt is stuck. Don't use the metal side of a brush though.

If they are truly "DBD", that stuff is near bullet proof - I have a set of '03 TM Rac Combos I stripped and had refinished with it.  It isn't a "coating" like chrome or PVD, it is actually heat treated into the outer-most layer of the metal itself, so unless you wear away the top layer of steel you aren't going to hurt it.

Use a wire brush. It should wear the finish off quicker providing spousal evidence the clubs require replacement.
