Do you think of your swing as more "around" (back and forward), or "up and down"?

I'm definitely have the "up and down" feeling from the camps of Don Trahan, Dalton McCrary and others.

Helps with my transition as I feel it's easier to let the club fall into my downswing.

When I try to go more around, I tend to get way too quick and way too OTT.

I get hard pull hooks or leave the ball waaaay right.

I prefer going up with the arms, then down with a body turn then continue the body turn and go back up with the arms.  It feels more natural to me and you can really get some speed at the bottom of the swing without much effort, you just have to snap the club back up after the ball.  But this swing is a bit steep, I take bigger divots and you have to watch your low point control.

The swing around your body requires a ton of effort, is more shallow, wants to go out more than down.  I've actually found that I am better off with my driver using this swing and my irons are better using the up and down swing.

I have also found that the up and down swing is more of a rhythm swing and sometimes it can be difficult to start the back swing.  Also the up and down swing has more face rotation through impact whereas the around swing the face just seems to stay square to path.

Issues for me with the up and down feel with irons:

Low point control, tend to hit slightly heavy leaving shots short.

Release at the ball instead of after the ball, causes an open face oddly enough.

Absolutely need a good move in the back swing getting your back to the target and in dynamic balance,  and you have to be patient in transition.

Issues with the around swing for me:

Again, low point control, swing is much shallower, I tend to hit thin and I rarely take divots with anything but wedges.

With irons I tend to hook the ball due to a strong grip, for some reason I can't do the around swing with a neutral grip.

Around swing is much easier to release too late and drag the handle through impact, because the swing requires more effort, towards the end of the round I start doing this.

9 to 3 swings can go anywhere, seriously no consistency, I guess the point is; the more upright the club, the harder it is for me to swing around.

Final notes: Up and down swing produces higher shots with more spin.  Even though the face closes more the ball generally doesn't curve as much for me.  Easier to play a fade with. Both swings produce similar distance.

And my dilemma always ends up being that I can make either swing work for most of my clubs, but not all of them.  So I get stubborn and try to fix one or the other so it will work with all of them, which leads to inconsistency and switching my swing all the time.

When I am swinging bad, it's because I try to do the 'around' portion too much with my arms.  What is helpful to me is to think that the arms provide the vertical element while the body, (shoulder feel for me), provides the horizontal element.  Basically, you don't swing the club around with your arms, you move it around with the body.

Got some coaching this past weekend from a pro that's been helping me here and there for the last couple of years. This is exactly where I need to be, and precisely what we worked on. It's not that I needed more "up and down" to my swing -- I need more body-driven rotation and less arms and hands input.

Yep. I Swanee I almost mentioned him too.  But am not AS familiar with his swing.  But I recalled it being upright and down the line in premise.  We all rotate. But some hit the extreme inside of the ball and some hit more of the back or even outside for a big cut .  And of course the longer the club the more laid down it has to be.

I crowd the ball and never fear an S word.  Lol.

Same.  I'm Rahmbo close to the ball and set up off the heel.  All signs point to shank oh rama, but I manage to either hit the sweet spot or slightly toe side.  My cousin says it's an abomination.  I can also hook the living s*** outta my wedges too mind you on purpose.  My brother has never seen anything like it according to him, LOL.
