New Driver not "New Release" What do I want?

Recommended Posts

Looking to upgrade my driver from my Tour Edge Pro I currently have. I don't want to spend $550 on the "newest" driver so I was thinking about gaming one of last year models for about $300-350. I was considering the TS2 Titleist or the Ping. I'm wide open for suggestions to go look at. What do you all think? I'm a decent player. Play to a 10 and currently swing the Srixon ZX7 irons.

Figure out a shaft you want to play and search for it on eBay... find one attached to a club head with the right loft and price and pull the trigger.

There are a lot of options in the 2 year range. The shaft will likely be the biggest thing. So either find one already upgraded or find a head and shaft separately.

G410 LST is still very very valid.  G400 LST is as well with an even bigger savings.

Oh yeah, tons of good options in that $350 range from last year even new.

At that price range literally anything in the last 2 years could be had, I'd recommend the G410 as I love Pings, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

There are so many- Ping G400 LST, G400Max, TM- TM5/6, Titleist-TS3/2, Callaway Epic Flash 3D, Mavrik, CobraF9, SZ.

Like others have said, shaft choice is going to play a factor in you finding the right combo.

Not another one. However I don't know I will quit using this one. If I can't get better dispersion and at least 20+ yds I'm going to stay with what I have. I will just go and hit some and see what the monitor says. Have a good mind to take my TE in with me and hit it so I know the monitor isn't lying to me.

I also will recommend the G400 LST (not because I play one, is because is a really good driver), G410 and G425s are just as good, but for the money, I would suggest the 400 or 410...good luck.

G400 LST is a great choice.

I just bought a practically new Srixon Z585 for $185 and I think you can still get new ones for around $250.

It's non adjustable but it's really impressive as far as trajectory (mid), length (just about as long as anything else), and dispersion ( straight).

The adjustable model, the Z785, costs a little more.

I'll be the second or third to say don't sleep on the Cobra SZ from last season. Can be had around $200 if you get the right deal and it flat out performs.

TS2 is as solid as they come.  My father had one and I hit it few times.  Had the wrong flex for me, but I was hitting it solely for sound and feel.  Can't go wrong with that head.  Ping makes very good drivers as well.  My buddy that lives in the same complex games a G400 MAX.  Very forgiving but you may not like the louder sound.  You may want to look into the SIM line.  I have the OG SIM as a back up and it's a beast.  Very solid feel and muted sound.  Also excellent ball speed as well.

I would suggest doing a lot of research on the shaft first or even getting fit. In my experience, the shaft has always has a much bigger effect on my game. Not only looking at Stiff vs. Regular flex, but also looking at bend profiles to see which one suites your game the best. My vote is for the Epic Flash though. good luck!

I just got a nearly new rad speed for like 320 shipped, so that’s another option.  Mizuno st200 is solid as well and can be found at a really great price.

personally I’d get this years cobra or the sim1/sim max1 depending on what you like better.

thanks for starting this thread, I am very much in the same boat. I personally am looking at the Callaway Rogue, the 2 models of Cobra Speedzone, and the Tommy Armour 845 driver but that's because I can get them new at that price. I also plan to take my current r1s with me to see if anything actually improves.

I don’t get the question, you know all the same models and brands that we do, how would we know what fits and looks best to you?  Just because I tell you I play an epic flash, doesn’t mean you would like it.

I think the best thing to do is just go get fit somewhere that has all the older options and see what YOU like and get good results from.   You’re still talking about spending $350, that’s not trivial, you want it to work for you.

If you need a low spin driver, I agree,  the 9 degree pxg prototype is a good driver and a good deal. But if you’re a low spin player that needs more, you won’t like it much.   That’s kinda the point, it needs to be the right driver for you.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
