Comparable Shafts to True Temper AMT Black

Recommended Posts

I went for a fitting the other day - ended up walking out without clubs (unfortunately). Only had an hour and couldn't make a decision between the Mizuno JPX 921 Forged or the Titleist T100. I've also got the Srixon ZX7 and Taylormade 770 still bouncing in my head. Clearly I'm a mess.

The T100's that I hit had a True Temper AMT White shaft in them and the fitter explained that my swing is more suited to the Black AMT. With all the other irons I hit we didn't spend much time on other shafts that I should be looking for if I don't buy the T100 with the AMT Black. He specifically mentioned that I shouldn't buy a tipped shaft or the Project X LZ but I didn't get much detail on what else to look for. I think he mentioned a lighter swing weight - 105(?) but I'm really not sure if I got that right.

Any guidance all you wise individuals might be able to offer on similar shafts to the True Temper AMT Black?

Nippon NS Pro Modus?

KBS $-Taper?

Dynamic Gold?

Thanks so much!

You had a fitting and didn't try the shaft he recommends?

It was an in store fitting and they didn’t have that one available. I recognize that it wasn’t the full fitting experience which is a little disappointing. I didn’t understand the constraints that they would have until I was told they didn’t have that shaft and more broadly we ran out of time.

Well I hope it was free. The AMT Black is pretty common, you should be able to try one -- either in a fitting head or a demo. Normally I wouldn't expect a Hzrdus Black & S400 player to get along w an AMT Black. An AMT White would split the difference. How do you hit your gamers?

I hit the gamers okay. I'm a solid ball striker but would love a little more forgiveness in my irons without giving up anything on traditional looks. Honestly, I was stunned with how much longer everything I hit was than my current set. I've narrowed it down to the T100 and ZX7. I liked the JPX921 Forged but didn't realize how much those were de-lofted.

They're also for a different type of player that gets along w a Hzrdus Black. If you like the feel of the S400s but want more softness and height as the irons get longer AMT White would be a good option. It should be easy to get a nice used set of T100s w AMT White

Thanks. I really appreciate the guidance.

I want to give the AMT White shafts another shot as well. It just feels like my swing speed for a 7 iron (87-88 mph) should work for that shaft.

I switched from S300 to AMT White last year, and there's really no difference in the short irons.

AMT black is going to be lighter and softer.

Thank you. I’m going back today to make a decision and won’t worry about the lack of an AMT Black.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
